Barnwell: Panthers have the slowest WR routes in the NFL
Mage replied to Dorian Gray's topic in Carolina Panthers
Terrace Marshall definitely doesn't play that fast. That was even true at LSU and was one of his negatives as a prospect, that he didn't run as fast as he was timed (here's one example of a scouting report noting it). And in Mingo's case, a 4.46 isn't particularly fast for a WR. 15 wide receivers in this past draft alone ran a faster 40. And that is just in this last draft. Almost every NFL team has at least 2, if not 3, WRs faster than Jonathan Mingo. The coaching has been bad, I agree. But these wide receivers are very slow. DJ Chark is the only one with legit speed on the field. Another issue is that while they may have straight-line speed, we have NO wide receiver with agility whatsoever. Nobody that can make a dude miss in open field outside of Shenault, who isn't fast either. That makes it harder for them to separate because it limits their route-tree. Again not defending the coaching but this is a legitimately bad and slow receiving group. -
I'm not a fan of the screens, but they probably feel it is necessary given the lack of speed on the perimeter. I'm not a fan of the play-calling either but I get the screen calls.

It feels like we traded Christian McCaffrey and DJ Moore and got nothing out of it. I still believe in Bryce (but not with this current team) but we are the worst team in the NFL. We should have tanked when we had the chance after firing Rivera. Instead we signed Teddy Bridgewater and the rest is history. I still believe that offseason ruined this team. We were in the perfect position to field a bad team (because we were), get the pain over with, and have our pick of the litter, and instead thought it was worth it to sign the most average QB imaginable. Now we have no choice to tank because the team is that bad. Brian Burns and Derrick Brown are really our only very good players, and Burns doesn't even have a long-term contract. And we don't have a 2024 1st round pick. Absolute failure by this organization and it is painful to be a fan of this mess.

Am I a bad fan because I am looking forward to the skull-fugging we are about to receive at the hands of the Miami Dolphins? It is going to be glorious. And I don't say that because I don't love the Panthers. But maybe it will be the wake-up call this organization needs. It is certainly the one we deserve. I could have seen (and maybe even accepted) this season going poorly, but THIS bad? Yeah, this team needs to get slapped.

We aren’t talented offensively, but that’s not the issue.

Brian Burns is 100% getting traded. -

This is the worst Panthers team of all-time and we don't have a 1st round pick. -
Miles Sanders is a bad player

I have a special feeling about today. Strap in folks. We are in for a special performance from Bryce Young.

Jerry Jeudy is definitely better than DJ Chark. Chark is just tall and fast. I'm not saying he's a bad receiver, but he should be your #2 or #3 WR. Jeudy can really do it all. I do think he's a #1 WR. He out-produced Sutton last year on fewer targets. He's been the most productive Broncos receiver (when healthy) since being drafted. At the very least I'd argue he's as good as Calvin Ridley, who most people would say is a #1 WR. Ridley's 2020 season is better than anything Jeudy has had statistically, true, but even a 35 year old Matt Ryan is way better than any QB Jeudy has had. I AM NOT SAYING I WANT US TO TRADE FOR HIM. However I do think some of you are underrating Jeudy quite a bit. He's not as good as guys like Jefferson/Chase/Adams, but he's in the same ball-park as Ridley/Moore/Aiyuk

Probably thought another team would take him on waivers (ie us).

I'll never forget people on this forum saying DJ Moore wasn't a No. 1 WR LMAOOO

You're just guessing then. Every online source estimates him at somewhere around $2.5m. If you want to suggest otherwise, then find a source. Otherwise no, I'm not going to assume he's going to be making more in NIL than he would from his rookie signing bonus. I seriously doubt estimates are so far off that it would have him close to the 26m+ he would get as soon as he signs.

Yeah, I feel comfortable saying USC will definitely not be winning a national championship. There is 0 reason to think Lincoln Riley is either A) capable of fixing the defense or B) has any intentions of fixing the defense. CJ Stroud you could kind of see because Ohio State could absolutely win a natty with him. It ain't happening with USC. I mean maybe I guess but they would have to get lucky.

No it isn't. Caleb Williams is making an estimate of $2.6m in NIL this year. People just keep looking at base salary. It doesn't account for the guaranteed money / signing bonus that you get when you sign your rookie contract as a top-5 draft pick. Like do people really think Caleb Williams would make more in NIL than what, for example, Trevor Lawrence has already made? NIL money means more for guys who don't have great NFL aspirations. If you are going to be the No. 1 overall pick, then no, NIL money does not trump the money you get when you sign your rookie contract. For example, Bryce Young's signing bonus was $26 million. Even if Caleb Williams got another $2.5 next year, it would still take him 5 more college seasons to make what Bryce Young just made by signing a contract. On top of all the money you can still get from sponsors post-NFL. AND on top of that, your rookie contract is basically guaranteed unless you suck and your team releases you, and that isn't happening to the No. 1 Overall Pick. Whereas you are jeopardizing yourself with a potential injury if you return to college. Again NIL makes more sense for someone like Stetson Bennett. Someone who went late in the draft and won't have a huge signing bonus. He could conceivably make more from NIL than his rookie contract. But Caleb Williams? He absolutely would be sacrificing money next year by returning to USC and making himself susceptible to injury or worse, regression in performance. AND be setting himself a year back from signing the lucrative NFL QB extension.
-
Never say never, but I SERIOUSLY doubt Caleb Williams will return to USC. First off, the signing bonus for his rookie contract would definitely be more than what he would make next year. Two, it would push back a contract extension another year. I would believe Shadeur staying before I would Caleb and that is only because of his father.

What will there possibly be to get excited about for next year?
