Funny! However, all the drops happen prior to the first batted pass from Mayfield. At the time of Mayfield's first batted pass, Kyler had 2. Cardinals adjusted and I don't think he had another pass batted by the Panther's D the rest of the game (but I might be wrong about)

So I just finished the All22 for Sunday's game (third rewatch, but first in All22). The offense in the 2 minute drill is night and day from the set offense. It's lively improvisational and looks less like a highschool offense. I joked after the game that they should run it all the time as it keeps McAdoo's playcalling at bay. After this last rewatch I'd almost suggest moving towards an uptempo offense. I think it plays to everyone's strengths, especially DJ and Mayfield's chemistry. They seem to struggle to find each other in the normal offense, but they look like a different pair in the 2minute. I say go full Jim Kelly era Bills. Also, I watched the Watt deflection about 20 times, as there is defensive adjustment before the snap, and JJ rushes right to the passing lane before Mayfield even throws.. I think John Ellis was correct - the Cardinals DE recognized plays from tape (or the first half) and set-up traps to deflect and intercept. It happens again later twice with Zach Allen, and again later with Watt again. Either McAdoo is predictable or someone or something is tipping the short pass plays (Mayfield has a tell? Where CMC lines up?). 4 of the pass deflections are on quick passes. The fifth is over the middle, and JJ (s)Watt is just really good at blocking passes, and Mayfield's track record is playing into that. The second half defense is worrying again, but that unit can't be blamed when the offense can't put up points early in the game.

Having just sat through the All22, there are 3 drops by TEs in the first half. Ian Thomas has two drops in one series early. Tremble starts catching balls later. This offense is very inconsistent in all facets and therefore cannot sustain drives to put puts on the board. Time of possession for the offense is not helping. The defense's "bend don't break" is keeping them on the field for ages in second halves.

If there is a game to bench Mayfield and get his head on right, take a step back and come back with new perspective and life, it should be this one. I don't see many QBs in the league dealing well with the Niners, let alone one on essentially a put up or shut up game, still trying to get the offense clicking.

The Colts are everything to Irsay. I could see him doing a training camp fire of a new coach, in their first season if he thought it'd help his team. Reich is on thin ice.

I'm seriously beginning to wonder if we have a Robert California type situation going on here, and Rhule is gonna talk Tepper into giving him his job...

It's a pattern, clearly. Expecting players to overcome bad coaching is something you just don't see much of in the NFL, and at least, should not expect as a prerequisite for actually winning games, because you won't win many.

Rams offensive line is bad at the moment. Shanahan usually has McVay's number. Rams barely made it past the 9ers last season. There was a fun chart showing Goff's and Stafford's performances in the years with and without good OL play. The 9ers will win the West this year, even if Jimmy G gets hurt. Purdy is waiting in the wings. I think the Panthers hope (if any) is that the 9ers come in tired on a short week, blown emotions from beating their rivals, flat, (under-, properly-) estimating the Panthers, and Jimmy G throws a few timely picks, while the Panthers run D gets it right. CMC compensates for the playcalling and Mayfield takes sacks but avoids too many Interceptions. I'd not be surprised if Defenses outscore the offenses in this game. I'd also hope Campen is planning help for Icky and Moton, because Bosa is regularly the most double-teamed player in the NFL, and still does what he does.

Teddy was better than that elsewhere. Mayfield was far better than that, just last year, with upwards of six different injuries, unable to scramble, and with 4th string tackles blocking his blindside. Darnold was criminally developed with the Jets, so not sure he can play better than that, but the line in '21 and Rhule sure didn't develop him further. If you all think it's QB and not system, scheme, and coaching, I don't know what to tell you but to go back and rewatch the game film.

Game is on a short week and the 9ers are emotionally invested in beating the Rams. Maybe they'll be worn out come Sunday.

This is the absolute truth - and what I keep concluding after re-watching and analyzing games. No one is being put in a position to succeed. This scheme and staff is backwards and not getting even the average out of proven players from the Panthers, and is driving an average to above average QB into the bottom of the QB rankings. CMC has been turned from an elite receiving back into a Nebraska-style between the tackles fullback. The only way you would want to draft a high pick is if the entire staff is replaced with a proven QB developer. Rebuilds can ruin good QB talent as well as bottom dwelling teams that expect too much.

Every rewatch this season (and I've been doing about 3ish per game) the defensive scheme and play calling has looked worse - and it's not the players. They're making crazy plays - Luvu alone is like a one man wrecking crew. This could be a top-5 defense with the players here, especially with Derrick Brown playing well now. Losing Rhule, Snow, and McAdoo and let the talent on this team carry it. The offense has great improvisers gamebreakers. Let Foreman run down defenses, and change of pace with CMC. Change the route assignment for CMC and DJ. Let Higgins and Shenault run slot. The defense is fast, and not soft in the middle. Let Horn be an island and give CJ Henderson some help. Put Chinn back in the box. It actually doesn't seem that complicated - the coaches are getting in the way of the players. A good coach schemes to player's strengths. We're seeing the exact opposite here.

See Brian Burns comments about 4th quarter, from yesterday's game, as well as against the Saints. The offense is downright abysmal, but the second half defense has struggled in all four games, and, if you rewatch the games, you can see it's not (only) because they're being left out there on the field more. Most of the big drives the defense have given up came either after half-time rest, or following a (rare) actual offensive drive. Yesterday, Watt's deflection for the INT, obviously really hurt, and forced the defense back out there quickly, but the score came so quickly. Second half defensive adjustments seem non-existent. Kyler was a different QB in the second half, Jones in the fourth quarter, Jameis in the fourth quarter. Brisset's game winning drive. With the talent, this defensive unit should be even better, and coaching/scheme is also holding them back.

I rewatched the game last night - condensed on NFL+. I have different opinions about the game and certain players now than I did live. Would love to hear another person's review after a second watch. Most of the takes I come across for the NFL seem to be from people who only watch the games live. So much is missed in the emotions and all the many, many letdowns.

Teams that fire their coaches/coordinators midseason do sometimes seem to get a boost - play better football. Honestly, with the core of Panthers players, if the players just coached themselves, I'd wonder if it'd be an improvement over what we've seen. Removing bad coaching from an equation can give a lift, turn the season around.

The playcalling is still very streaky - pass, pass, pass or run, run, run. Predictable.

I agree. My central point was height isn't the issue if Newton could have the issue (Osweiler also had it, being 6'6") It's something else in Mayfield's game (and the offensive handling of him that needs to be addressed.

Ha, no one is saying that. All over the threads it's "midget this" and "short Qb" that, when it is other problems with a QB that can be fixed or addressed.

FFS. This post wasn't an attack on Cam, but a point that tall QBs get batted passes too. It's on the player, team, and coaches to fix.

No one is being a Baker Mayfield apologist with this. Height isn't the issue with batted passes. Cam is 6'5". Passes get batted for other reasons that can be fixed. You not understanding football is more pathetic, but cool.

I agree that the scheme is garbage as well, but the playcalling within that scheme is getting the worst out of a crap scheme. Driving uphill with a parking break on in 4th gear.

I can't get over the play calling on offense, through all four games, and especially the way the offense has looked when the pressure of the clock is applied to it. In a hypothetical, if McAdoo isn't replaced, but is retained, who takes over playcalling? Is anyone on staff an improvement?
