Our first 4 losses were due to an absolute horrible O, particularly total ass QB play. Total ass. Baker had a 14 QBR in one game. The Huddle was talking about the good OL Darnold days. Replacing Baker with PJ was "figuring it out." Had we let PJ throw beyond the LOS against the Rams, we might have won that too. In the end, the Bucs were missing 2 starting CBs, and their OL has been decimated since preseason. I agree, we hit the Bucs at the right time, like the Saints last year. PJ is going to be good, until the ints start rolling in. There's more wins ahead, unless the FO trades away more players.

Inside the Carolina Panthers' three seasons of quarterback failure
poundaway replied to Vox's topic in Carolina Panthers
Front office sources say Fitterer liked Trubisky to compete with Darnold for the starting job, but Trubisky eventually signed a two-year, $14.285 million deal with the Pittsburgh Steelers -- which offered a clearer path to a starting job. -
Inside the Carolina Panthers' three seasons of quarterback failure

As the losses mounted, Tepper's blood boiled, with one front office source describing him as "furious" over the way Darnold's fifth-year option hung over the franchise. (A source close to the owner said the "furious" characterization was too strong). -
Inside the Carolina Panthers' three seasons of quarterback failure

Fitterer's logic on the option, per a front office source, was this: The two-year payout would be reasonable, considering Darnold's $4.7 million due in 2021, and he'd be much more expensive if he lit up the field that season. Tepper, per a team source, questioned placing that value on Darnold so early in his relationship with the team but "reluctantly" approved, a source with direct knowledge of the negotiations said. -
62ish 10ish 521ish 267ish

You realize this is the most likely scenario. Its possible that PJ is one of the best QB's in football each week, but unlikely. Unless the FO gets rid of more players, and they don't have much time to that, we're winning 5ish games.

I have not read a single report anywhere that says Fit was against any of the moves he made. In fact his statements, Panthers Confidential and other reporting state the exact opposite. Rhule chose Fitterer, not the other way around.

The trade didn't "clear" much at all. It moved the money to "dead cap". We added 30 million to deadcap. If you are going to talk about cap space to defend the CMC trade, you are scraping bottom.

That wasn't the first tank dude.

One of their top picks is now sitting behind PJ as a backup. "Right now" is the operative word. It didn't work for a decade or more. It is not necessary. In the last 20 years, the Mannings are the only QB's that won the SB with the team that tanked for them. It can work, but its not the only way.

Falcons Could Be Down 3 Starters This Week
poundaway replied to Castavar's topic in Carolina Panthers
Weren't the Bucs missing a bunch of the secondary? -
Jets would tank all the way to a top 3 pick, and pick a QB. We may still do that, but we haven't so far.

We put in him in the slot against the Rams and he looked good.

CMC is a future HOFer. Robinson is not. CMC was arguably the best receiver on the team, in fact we started playing him in the slot against the Rams. Robinson was not. I think if Fit would have waited a bit longer he could have gotten more. Maybe not. In the end, it depends on how CMC does, the 9ers do, and what we get with the 2nd, 3rd, 4th and future 5th. I don't think CMC is going to go down with injury this year, I think he'll tear up. I don't think the 9ers are going to be bottom half of the league when the dust settles. I think they're a playoff team. I don't think Fit is going to rock the draft in the later rounds. We'll see.

There's something to be said for giving a QB time to settle into the O and get in sync with the receivers. Josh Allen wasn't very good his first year out. We've seen Teddy's best performance and Sam's and Bakers worst. Would Teddy had played better with another year in the O? Maybe. Would Sam had been better with the new OL? Maybe. Would Baker improve as McAdoo figures it out and he gets in sync with the WR's? Maybe. Its PJ's show now until he lets it go.

Players hoping to help Wilks win the full time job
poundaway replied to Mr. Scot's topic in Carolina Panthers
The game plan against the Rams was total ass. A negative average depth of target? Kneeing it out with timeouts at the half? But Wilks has shown he can adjust week to week. I'm guessing he'll need 3 more upsets in addition to winning the easy games to get HC. Its possible, but not very likely. -
8 of our 10 remaining games are winnable.
poundaway replied to thunderraiden's topic in Carolina Panthers
Meh. Too early to tell. PJ has now had 2 games where he hasn't thrown any ints. If he continues to play like he did on Sunday, we could win 5 or more games this season, but the only way we win the division will be because the division absolutely imploded. Its not a 3 win team, but it has yet to show that its more than a 5 win team. If Tepper and FO want to tank for #1, they are going to have to trade away more vets. -

Luke was taken with the 1st rounder the following year. You don't have to give up a future first to trade up in the draft. Cam and Luke are not mutually exclusive. It really depends on where we ended up in the draft how much we would have to give up to get to Cam. Maybe we would have had to give up McClain, Fua, Alexander or Adams. In the past 20 years, only the Mannings were SB champs with the team that tanked for them.

Tabor won games as an interim in Chicago and his unit was producing. I guess people define tanking differently. Heres pnp on tanking
-
Exactly. Tepper chose Wilks because even when he was trying to win, he created the absolute worst team in the league. Even the vet QB Bradford had his worst stats in Wilks' O. The D was atrocious with some talent on it. Wilks took an 8-8 team and made them worst in the league. In 2020 CMC played in 3 games. We lost all 3. The 5 wins were other games. In 2021, CMC's record was driven more by easy teams on the schedule than by CMC turning the tide. This year, CMC played in 5 games, We won 1. LIke it or not, we are looking at another 5 win-ish season, even with CMC gone. If you consider 5 wins tanking, we've already been doing that.

Baker's play has been absolute ass. Allowing PJ to actually throw beyond the LOS, showed what the O could have been. Even in Baker's best year, he started cold for half the season. In McAdoo's best year as OC the giants O sucked at the beginning of the season. Baker may very well be done as a Panther since we're collecting picks and his 4th becomes a 5th if he doesn't play 70% of the snaps. PJ will play until he starts piling up ints again, at the point we may be seeing the return of Darnold.

Stafford was not drafted by the Rams. The Rams did not tank for Stafford. The Manning brothers are the only 2 SB champions in the last 20 years whose teams tanked for them. The rest of the SB champion QBs were acquired via FA, trade, trading up in the draft or were a later pick. Tepper and Fit are trying to tank by choosing a coach who has successfully tanked before, and trading away CMC. But Wilks is learning this time, and they are going to have to get rid of more than CMC to change that. We were 5 wins the past two years, mostly without CMC.
