Panthers release first depth chart of 2024

Didn't realize TJ Smith was on the roster. I wonder if he got brought in to potentially play alongside DJ Wonnum. Surprised to see Crumedy so far down, but he's got a longshot already considering he was a day 3 selection. Didn't expect to see that Robinson was moved to NCB and that Lamar Jackson has moved ahead of D'Shawn Jamison either. EDGE might not be as bad as we were thinking if Johnson is starting to come into his own, Chaisson is able to build on training camp, and Wonnum can contribute. Jalen Coker still has a shot at the final roster! Just realized Sam Franklin is DEEP down there at safety despite being injured while other injured players aren't listed. I wonder if that means he's coming along well with the broken foot already? -
My impression is that he sees the value in Young getting more snaps with Corbett but understands the argument for sitting starters during preseason games. As @Old Depot pointed out, joint practices are a factor to consider. From everything they have said, it sounds like they're looking to evaluate down the roster for the first two preseason games before treating the third as a dress rehearsal depending on how things looked during the joint sessions vs the Jets.

Moton's knee was no longer in the sleeve today.

Y'all... There's a video with Coach Canales giving his answer. Why link a tweet from the media who's incentivized to get you to click by any means necessary? I swear some folks just want to be upset. https://twitter.com/i/broadcasts/1gqxvNwLXLOxB Joe asks the question @ 2:20. Person: "Is there a chance that you might just not have Bryce play in any of these games?" Canales: "That could be. Ya know, I keep going back and forth with that because there's some value to like, just allowing him to play with Austin, you know? And then there's also the flip side of which we know, ya know. We're counting on those guys, and ya know, its, that's another approach too and different teams have different philosophies for how they *connection jumps* that's kind of what I've been wrestling with, Joe."

Like what just happened with folks trying to redefine deep ball to mean 60+ yards?

Bryce Young up JT is super hardworking and is a sponge. Has done a great job with coaches and on the field. Whenever something happens he always turns around and asks questions to find out what happened, whether it was his fault, and what they need to do. JT is going up today for the second time because he didn't go long enough the first time. Having a bunch of different targets is great for Bryce because that's what happens during the season. They're not game planning nor putting people in specific places, so everyone is getting to run every route at every receiver position. Trusts in coach and whether or not Canales believes that Bryce should play in preseason is up to them. Last year was a similar situation preseason-wise and he was able to learn a lot since it was his first NFL "game." Going to trust coach whether or not he plays. You learn how good people are in the NFL in preseason or regular season. Best of the best going at it every down. Saw how everybody came out with the same intensity last year and seeing that level of play was cool to see. Super confident in whatever coaches decide re: playing Thursday. They've been in the league longer than he is so he's going to trust them. Talked up the defense and mentioned joint practices as ways to challenge himself and get better. Speaking on this year and this group, the competitiveness has been good. Guys are getting shuffled to different spots and they're just trying to learn. Nobody is comparing to previous experiences, just focusing on growing now. Willing to make mistakes now and correct them rather than brushing it off. Big point of emphasis is to not make the same mistake twice. Been great watching the receiver group respond to that. David Newton getting parried again. Asked about guys not getting open, but then mentioned if they did get open the line didn't protect or Bryce didn't get it to them. "Last year was last year." New group, new coaching staff, new philosophy, etc. Last year is part of the cumulative past and they're focused on the now. Hasn't learned anything he couldn't already see in OTAs re: Diontae but seeing him in person shows how much of a competitor he is. Things are tough even in ideal conditions, but he comes out fired up every day and gives every rep effort. Comes up after practice wanting to get more work on things that they messed up in practice. Diontae cares a lot for the details and has been nothing but accountable. Not pre-planning for the Patriots because they're in "camp mode." Knows it's going to be a limited game plan but hasn't gotten a chance to look specifically into the Patriots and their defense yet. Going to trust the scouting and stuff they go over when they start the process. Super important as a QB and leader to get to know his WRs on and off the field. Everyone is different. If you don't take time to learn how they run routes, how they want the ball, etc then it shows up on the field. It doesn't stop on the field either, it goes into the locker room and outside afterwards. It all translates. Grateful to be in the position that he is with the receivers that they have. Talked up the locker room as a whole (was asked specifically about building relationships with his receivers). That's a wrap for today.
