Combine numbers 5'8" 135 as a sophomore in HS but hit a late growth spurt his Jr/Sr years Only had offers from Southern Illinois, Colgate University, and University of North Dakota Strained his groin 3 or 4 days before the combine testing, so he wasn't even at 100% but decided to test anyways DROY snub Won Defensive Rookie of the Month 2 out of the 4 months of the season, 2nd? the other two months. Felt snubbed but has long term goals that he wants to accomplish Tucker believes that Chinn would've been DROY if he had been the 2nd overall drafted player due to player's draft status following them throughout their careers LB or Safety? Doesn't mind where he lines up, but feels comfortable at Safety and that it's his more natural position Not much will change from what he did last season, will just be starting at the safety position rather than SLB Biggest difference from last season will be as the last line of defense and playing more deep than in the box as much as he did last season, but will ultimately be similar roles What's different going into year 2 with Rhule? Getting the older guys to buy in year 2 after the college mentality of year 1 Sam Darnold Sam's talented and naturally gifted, was the 3rd overall pick for a reason. Has all of the tools. Has bought in to being coached and talking to the guys

With Brown & Roy going into their second years and the additions this offseason (Jones, Fox, Nixon, and Hoskins), the team is in a good position to get better. If the interior should have a minor upgrade, the MLB and other DE positions offer significant upgrades. Haason Reddick & Denzel Perryman replacing Stephen Weatherly & Tahir Whitehead have to give the defense a better chance to get off of the field. Those overall hurries? Haason Reddick alone had more hurries (16) than the four from last season combined (15). That would push the team from 20th to 11th. Pressures? 62 for the 2021 additions to last season's 45 to go from 18th in pressures to 11th. Sacks? 21.5 vs 7.5 (from 22nd to 9th). TFLs? The new crop has 23 more TFLs to their name, which would have pushed the Panthers from 26th to 7th. The only stats that aren't significantly altered from those changes are missed tackles (new guys have 2 less than last year's) and INTs (last year's has 1 to the new guys' 0). There's also the 4 extra PDs from the additions. I'm feeling much, much better about this year's defense than I did last year's which was expected to struggle.

Thank you for the heads up on this! I got curious about Luke's thoughts and found the clip mentioned (click here). Luke mentions that tackles are great, but if you can effect the game at or behind the LOS and in the pass game in coverage, LBs tend to separate themselves. He specifically mentions TFLs being incredibly valuable with the best having 10 - 12. Their ability in coverage is important, but their ability to effect the play at or behind the LOS is what differentiates the great LBs. With that in mind, let's do some more stats digging! A couple of quick notes, once again: Julian Stanford and Clay Johnston are not on the list as their contributions came primarily on ST Christian Miller is not on the list as his only stats from his rookie season are for pass rushing. He did not appear to drop back in coverage (at least, according to PFR) Sam Franklin was included as he played a role similar to what Jeremy Chinn did, but as a rotational piece Denzel Perryman only started 6 of the 13 games that he played last season. He had significant injury concerns leading up until then and is considered a high risk for injury, but he was in Anthony Lynn's doghouse during his time with the Chargers (Lynn even sent Perryman and Tillery home rather than having them come to a game). Player Comb TFL Sks MTkl% FFs INTs PDs PassRat Jeremy Chinn 117 2 1 11.4% 2 1 5 115.5 Shaq Thompson 114 6 0 6.6% 2 0 5 90.7 Jermaine Carter Jr 46 2 0 9.8% 0 0 1 93.7 Frankie Luvu 59 3 2 19.4% 1 0 1 131.2 Denzel Perryman 48 3 1 2.0% 1 0 1 94.7 Sam Franklin 23 1 1 14.8% 0 0 1 91.1 You know... for all of the unfair criticisms that Shaq receives ("bUt hIs cOntrAct"), he's the best cover LB on the team. He has the lowest passer rating when targeted out of the LBs listed, tied for 3rd on the team in PDs (only behind Donte + Rasul), and only Perryman has a better missed tackle percentage while having just over a third of Shaq's combined tackles. Shaq also leads the group in TFLs, Luke's under appreciated stat. Frankie Luvu's numbers concern me a bit, but I'm hoping to see Jermaine Carter Jr get more opportunities this season as he showed that he was clearly the better option when compared to Tahir Whitehead last season. Jeremy Chinn's passer rating when targeted concerns me a bit, but he was also a rookie playing everywhere. Plus, we've already seen what the kid can do and that's literally everything. Numbers don't lie tho: Shaq Thompson is currently the best LB on the team. His numbers were also better than Deion Jones, who in a previous thread was somehow rated above him? Hopefully now that the team has a better DL + DBs (and no more Tahir Whitehead), Shaq can effect more plays behind the line like he did in 2019 when he had 11 TFLs + 3 sacks.

Brian Burns is gonna get charged with assault this year at the rate he's putting hands on opposing QBs. Lawd that man is good.

Eh... idk about that. It took until week 3 for the team to get their first sack and they were not lighting it up until later in the year with two 5 sack performances (vs DET & GB). It is definitely a good sign that they started to get to the QB but they weren't doing that until later in the season. Fully agree with the team needing to do better vs the run tho
-
I believe it does as the DL did their job in that scenario while the coverage failed. Can also include QB hits/Hurries if there's interest, but I won't be able to edit OP to include it.

The only way that I see Daley starting is if Moton kicks over to LT and Trent Scott forgets how to walk.

Her sister, Kysre, was the 4th pick. Kalabrya was a finalist for Michigan's Miss Basketball Award tho.

Inspired by the recent comments made by Jets' DE Carl Lawson on the Jime Rome show highlighted in this article. With this perspective in mind, I wanted to take a look at the defensive linemen currently on the Panthers' roster. A couple of interesting notes before looking at the numbers: While Brian Burns is far and away the team's best pass rusher, Efe Obada was 2nd on the team in pressures (21) and sacks (5.5). Austin Larkin was also the only defensive lineman on the roster that did not have any sacks nor pressures (127 defensive snaps). Christian Miller opted out last season, so I've included the numbers from his 2019 rookie season. Frankie Luvu is included as he lined up as an OLB in a 3-4 most often during his time with the Jets. Mike Panasiuk spent his time on the practice squad last year without playing in any games so he has been left off the list along with rookies Daviyon Nixon and Phil Hoskins as I'm currently unable to find college stats for pressures, only sacks. Player Sk Prss Brian Burns 9 37 Haason Reddick 12.5 34 Derrick Brown 2 19 Morgan Fox 6 13 Yetur Gross-Matos 2.5 12 DaQuan Jones 2 11 Marquis Haynes 4 10 Bravvion Roy 1 8 Frankie Luvu 2 7 Christian Miller 2 2 Caraun Reid 0 1 Frank Herron 0 1 Austin Larkin 0 0 The addition of Haason Reddick looks like it could be a major boost to the team's pass rush while Derrick Brown quietly impacted the pass more than some fans would have us believe as he was 3rd on the team in pressures last year. Jones and Fox also look like they'll provide some interior help while Reid, Herron, and Larkin likely won't make the final roster. Hoskins and Nixon have their work cut out for them to make the main roster with Brown, Jones, Roy, and Fox all likely making the final cut unless one of them can overtake Roy for his spot. It'll be interesting seeing Frankie Luvu, Marquis Haynes, and Christian Miller compete. At least one of those guys could lose their roster spot to one of the aforementioned DTs, but if all three practice well they could all still make the team.

Surprised that folks are still trying to split hairs between pay for LT/RT when pass rushers are moving all over the line and not just rushing from just the blind side.

The vaccines are primarily to prevent hospitalizations and deaths, which they've been incredibly successful with accomplishing seeing the recent statistics regarding hospitalizations and deaths from COVID-19 over the last couple of months. J&J's vaccine was killed over its efficacy, but they tested it against the mutating strands in Brazil + South Africa. Deaths and hospitalizations were still dramatically reduced. I haven't read up as much on the Pfizer and Moderna trials but I don't believe they were as proactive in checking against variants (though I could be wrong, but I know that was a major reason behind the J&J stuff). I was partial to J&Js already since I had a family member that was the CIO for their Pharmaceutical Research & Development department and I interned there a cpl of times myself (though I was with their Networking & Computer Services division).

REPORT: No movement in Panthers’ talks w/ Taylor Moton
Icege replied to TheSpecialJuan's topic in Carolina Panthers
Franchising Moton for a second year in a row will run the team $16.5M If he's looking for a 5yr/$85M+ type deal I can see the team taking him this season and next on the tag and looking for contingency options to cover themselves in case he gets hurt or wants out of Carolina. Rly hoping he signs long term but I wouldn't be surprised if it takes longer than expected -
How much of the Jets performance was really on Darnold?
Icege replied to SBBlue's topic in Carolina Panthers
Watching the Jets-Rams game from last year and... Sam is for sure rough around the edges. He had his moments, but his play just seems so... sloppy? However, the dude can make things happen when the play breaks down. I wonder how much better his development would've been had he had actual protection and WRs that could hold on to the ball (he had an awesome play where he scrambled around, launched it deep, and his WR dropped it -_-). Pat Elflein stood out as bad tho... he was regularly bull rushed into the backfield and seemed to struggle in pass pro. Running plays where he was allowed to leak to the second level he looked better, but I need that man to protect Sam better than he did last year (at least during this game). Frank Luvu was unremarkable, though he did get TATTOO'D by the RB in pass pro while trying to blitz on one play. I've only gotten through the first half, so maybe he starts to look better later in the game. Morgan Fox looks like he could be a quietly solid acquisition. Good feet and change of direction for a guy lining up inside. -
Ranking the NFC South LBs: Where does Panthers' Shaq Thompson fit in?

Count down until somebody complains about Shaq's contract and claims he's "just decent" or "bad in coverage" in 5... 4... 3... -

BR's list of most overpaid players on every team
Icege replied to ladypanther's topic in Carolina Panthers
tb100 that's a big reason why I just put folks on ignore and keep it moving now after throwing up a wall of (researched) text. The people that can see the stats and still try to force a false narrative aren't worth the time because the only thing that's going to matter to them is what they believe rather than what they know. Screaming into the void that is the Huddlers Of Emotion (aka HOEs ) just isn't worth it. -

Shaq is more than a decent LB. He's a very good LB that doesn't have to be downplayed to criticize a contract given by a GM with a history of overpaying. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ -

Oh look, another thread where folks start chirping that Shaq isn't good before trying to pretend that they're only criticizing his contract. -
Jermain Carter Highest PFF Panther LB Last Year
Icege replied to SBBlue's topic in Carolina Panthers
TD in his first 6yrs had 3 INTs, 22 PDs, 8 FFs, 11 sacks, 392 tackles, 0 TDs. Shaq has 1 INT, 17 PDs, 4 FFs, 9.5 sacks, 470 tackles, 1 TD. TDSr was SPECIAL special. There's a reason he's a Ring of Honor lock. Shaq has been more than solid, but people will ALWAYS hate their favourite players' replacements. -
Just put the rage addicted trolls on ignore. They'll eventually type themselves out or into a corner. Back to CMC being CMC

Jermain Carter Highest PFF Panther LB Last Year
Icege replied to SBBlue's topic in Carolina Panthers
Whenever LB play comes up, folks disparage Shaq's play. Some will try to slide in that "He's not worth his contract," line but will also follow that up with claiming that he's just a guy rather than a solid starter (or encourage a false narrative such as his alleged lacking in coverage). He could not be worth top 5 LB money but still be a really solid player. Spending time trying to discuss why he shouldn't have gotten paid so much from one of the worst GMs in the league when it came to contracts ignores who the real issue is there: the guy that offered him the contract. it's right up there with folks that claimed CMC was at best a slot WR so he shouldn't have been drafted where he was. I've said what I've said in regards to Shaq tho, and I don't want that to distract any more than it already has from how much Jermaine Carter has improved. The dude played in only 7 games compared to Whitehead's 9 but Carter Jr put up just 5 tackles less while also matching stats in pass deflections, fumble recoveries, AND had two TFLs compared to Tahir's 0. The man outplayed another with 6yrs more pro experience. -
Putting bad faith posters on ignore is the money move
