Panthers release first depth chart of 2024
Icege replied to Carolina Panthers's topic in Carolina Panthers
Didn't realize TJ Smith was on the roster. I wonder if he got brought in to potentially play alongside DJ Wonnum. Surprised to see Crumedy so far down, but he's got a longshot already considering he was a day 3 selection. Didn't expect to see that Robinson was moved to NCB and that Lamar Jackson has moved ahead of D'Shawn Jamison either. EDGE might not be as bad as we were thinking if Johnson is starting to come into his own, Chaisson is able to build on training camp, and Wonnum can contribute. Jalen Coker still has a shot at the final roster! Just realized Sam Franklin is DEEP down there at safety despite being injured while other injured players aren't listed. I wonder if that means he's coming along well with the broken foot already? -
My impression is that he sees the value in Young getting more snaps with Corbett but understands the argument for sitting starters during preseason games. As @Old Depot pointed out, joint practices are a factor to consider. From everything they have said, it sounds like they're looking to evaluate down the roster for the first two preseason games before treating the third as a dress rehearsal depending on how things looked during the joint sessions vs the Jets.

Moton's knee was no longer in the sleeve today.

Y'all... There's a video with Coach Canales giving his answer. Why link a tweet from the media who's incentivized to get you to click by any means necessary? I swear some folks just want to be upset. https://twitter.com/i/broadcasts/1gqxvNwLXLOxB Joe asks the question @ 2:20. Person: "Is there a chance that you might just not have Bryce play in any of these games?" Canales: "That could be. Ya know, I keep going back and forth with that because there's some value to like, just allowing him to play with Austin, you know? And then there's also the flip side of which we know, ya know. We're counting on those guys, and ya know, its, that's another approach too and different teams have different philosophies for how they *connection jumps* that's kind of what I've been wrestling with, Joe."

Like what just happened with folks trying to redefine deep ball to mean 60+ yards?

Bryce Young up JT is super hardworking and is a sponge. Has done a great job with coaches and on the field. Whenever something happens he always turns around and asks questions to find out what happened, whether it was his fault, and what they need to do. JT is going up today for the second time because he didn't go long enough the first time. Having a bunch of different targets is great for Bryce because that's what happens during the season. They're not game planning nor putting people in specific places, so everyone is getting to run every route at every receiver position. Trusts in coach and whether or not Canales believes that Bryce should play in preseason is up to them. Last year was a similar situation preseason-wise and he was able to learn a lot since it was his first NFL "game." Going to trust coach whether or not he plays. You learn how good people are in the NFL in preseason or regular season. Best of the best going at it every down. Saw how everybody came out with the same intensity last year and seeing that level of play was cool to see. Super confident in whatever coaches decide re: playing Thursday. They've been in the league longer than he is so he's going to trust them. Talked up the defense and mentioned joint practices as ways to challenge himself and get better. Speaking on this year and this group, the competitiveness has been good. Guys are getting shuffled to different spots and they're just trying to learn. Nobody is comparing to previous experiences, just focusing on growing now. Willing to make mistakes now and correct them rather than brushing it off. Big point of emphasis is to not make the same mistake twice. Been great watching the receiver group respond to that. David Newton getting parried again. Asked about guys not getting open, but then mentioned if they did get open the line didn't protect or Bryce didn't get it to them. "Last year was last year." New group, new coaching staff, new philosophy, etc. Last year is part of the cumulative past and they're focused on the now. Hasn't learned anything he couldn't already see in OTAs re: Diontae but seeing him in person shows how much of a competitor he is. Things are tough even in ideal conditions, but he comes out fired up every day and gives every rep effort. Comes up after practice wanting to get more work on things that they messed up in practice. Diontae cares a lot for the details and has been nothing but accountable. Not pre-planning for the Patriots because they're in "camp mode." Knows it's going to be a limited game plan but hasn't gotten a chance to look specifically into the Patriots and their defense yet. Going to trust the scouting and stuff they go over when they start the process. Super important as a QB and leader to get to know his WRs on and off the field. Everyone is different. If you don't take time to learn how they run routes, how they want the ball, etc then it shows up on the field. It doesn't stop on the field either, it goes into the locker room and outside afterwards. It all translates. Grateful to be in the position that he is with the receivers that they have. Talked up the locker room as a whole (was asked specifically about building relationships with his receivers). That's a wrap for today.

Ja'Tavion Sanders' presser Making the most out of opportunity. Ian and Tommy have been tremendous help for him and he's grateful. Taking it day-by-day. Spoke with Coach Banks (his TE coach @ Texas) who has been asking about him on Twitter/X. Going to get up with him and chop it up afterwards. Didn't get a chance to talk to Greg Olsen today but is going to get with him at Tight End U. Felt things clicking today, coming day-by-day while Tommy and Ian stay in his ear. They're showing him what it's like to be a pro on and off the field. Ian's been helping him with keeping up with his body as an 8yr veteran. Diet was something he personally approached, but the recovery process has been something he's learning. Getting closer with Bryce as he gets more reps with the 1s. Not worried about the number he's wearing. Has a lot more free time as a pro, which is the most drastic change from college. Has to manage his time better. Main focus after practice is recovering physically. Singing "Beautiful Crazy" by Luke Combs for the rookie talent show.

Canales' presser Notes to start: Great bounce back day. Challenging practice in pads last time, pushing the groups with reps. Thinks the group responded from a focus standpoint but he's still looking for consistency and high energy. Push that bar, stack great days which they know they'll need during the season when you get Wednesday + Thursdays to stack days. XL's MRI revealed no fractures. Fantastic news, so he's day-to-day. Not expected to play on Thursday out of an abundance of caution. Nothing triggered it, was just starting to heat up on him and the training staff ID'd it. TMJ got the wind knocked out of him on the collision. Will continue to keep an eye on him. Valuable for all of the guys to get reps not just the first stringers for the evaluation process. Wants to see the depth rotate in with the 1s. Part of the "next man up" mentality. Going to get through a hard practice tomorrow to really evaluate who will be available for Thursday. They're going to decide on depth chart and play time tomorrow night. Going back and forth on having Bryce play. There's value to playing with Corbett, but also counting on the other guys. Wrestling with that. Pads tomorrow. DL was running gassers after they shortened practice. They're asking players to go out there and still get it when they cut early. Vets are calling out their own conditioning and getting extra work. Going to look at the HoF Game to look more at the new kickoff rules and how their scheme fits. Seeing consistency from Xavier Woods. He's communicating. Fuller + Scott also mentioned as guys that have been in the system and are actively communicating. He's moving around, looking explosive, and taking his shot on plays. WR room looks great. Talked up the guys already here and how they're doing. Solid room competition-wise. CB Lamar Jackson has been getting more reps and making plays. He's put enough out there that they want to see it show up on game film. Love the way he's finishing on the ball. Asked about ISM and doesn't want to reveal depth chart stuff yet, but he's a great returner. That type of stuff gives guys an edge by showing what they can do for the team. He's given himself a great shot. Asked how he's determining Bryce's mastery of the offense. It's functioning: pre-snap mechanics of getting them up to the line, getting themt ot he right plays in the run game, in the pass game it's about getting it to the first open guy within the time they want, and when the pocket breaks apart extending plays. He's doing a great job of getting the group polished but we're not there yet. Wants the first group especially to function like a fine tuned machine which we're not at yet. Loves the execution part of the concepts. Looking for guys on vet days to communicate and connect with the other players, whether it be a dialogue with Bryce on the run game (was specifically asked about Corbett having the day off and what Canales wants to see). Coaching staff has to set the foundation and lay the standards out. "This is what we're looking for." The players have to be the ones out there talking to each other, bring each other together, etc. Coaches can help refocus but it comes down to them to execute in all situations on gameday. Important for them to take that ownership. The standard should be, "This is how we practice, this is how we play," and hold themselves accountable. Asked if he gets upset despite positivity. Absolutely, especially about low effort and low regard for the ball (not securing on offense or trying to punch out on defense). His mindset is, "How good can we become?" He's not a happy, go-lucky guy that sits back. When they're short of the standard it bothers him because he knows what they can look like. Upset Dave yells a little bit. Had a couple of moments yesterday. Bounces back quickly and has his reminders of where they're at in regards to this training camp. As the info piles up, so do the plays as they mix in. Has to have grace with himself and this team. Would love to continue to bring in other players and challenge their roster (when asked about OLB). Called out Traore getting reps against Clowney as well as Mays taking snaps at center ("He looks great.") Chandler got in and showed what he can do as a powerful guy with athleticism while Lewis was out. As we get closer and closer to the end of the preseason, there will be important decisions to make based of the effort they're putting out. Doesn't have any numbers in mind for catches, but Johnson is the starting point for the pass game. If defenses know you're going towards a certain player, they adjust their playcalling which the team can take advantage of. Gotta have focal points for the run game and drop back passing so that it opens up other aspects of the game. Diontae still has a ways to go with what they're trying to do, but he's making himself available and taking those in-between windows to talk to Bryce and get on the same page. JT Sanders' summary coming up. Looks like Bryce is the last one at the podium today. He's just starting as I'm posting this.

Queueing up the pressers while finishing getting stuff put away. So far they've had Canales and JT Sanders up. Haven't been able to listen in yet because my household is a zoo this morning. -_-
