Round 3 - The Carolina Panthers Select DJ Johnson - EDGE - Oregon
Seltzer replied to rodeo's topic in Carolina Panthers
Honestly, very little if anything will matter from this draft in 3 years time other than if Bryce Young is a franchise QB. I don't know enough about any of these prospects outside the top guys to know. I seriously doubt hardly anyone else on here does either. I don't hate the pick, because if you've found a good rotational player outside the top 2 rounds, it's a good draft pick. That being said, you would hope the coaching staff has conviction he can contribute at least some this year to pick him where they did -
I think we need to sign a FA EDGE. Biggest remaining need IMO. We have young guys we drafted (YGM, Haynes, Barno) but we need an established guy with Burns. Last major hole on the team
-
I am interested to see if YGM can find a role in this defense. My concern is this: we have several guys with edge rush ability (YGM, Luvu, Haynes, Barno), but no one really proven other than Burns. I hope this means they are hoping to get more out of YGM, but that was also the expectation last year and YGM was not good. I still think signing a proven 3-4 Edge in FA would be smart.

Dave Tepper has become a major asset for the Panthers
Seltzer replied to TheSpecialJuan's topic in Carolina Panthers
David Tepper is obviously an incredibly intelligent man. I'll give him credit- he has basically admitted (as much as a self-made billionaire can bring himself to do) that everything about Matt Rhule went against the process he would normally follow. I'll say this. This feels as much 180 degrees away from the start of the Rhule Era as possible. Everything this time makes sense. We'll have to wait to see how this plays out on the field, but as a fanbase, if you can't get behind the decisions Tepper has made over the past 6 months, I question whether you have the best interests of the Panthers in mind, b/c these recent decisions have been good ones. -
Anderson played quite well last year after he returned, especially against the run. Good depth signing. Holes are getting less and less on the roster. Only glaring ones right now remain another WR and Edge rusher/ OLB
-
I think Stroud or Young should be able to develop into a franchise guy with the right coaching and scheme. It's so much better for this franchise that we have Reich & Co running the show for this to happen than Rhule's circus, b/c I think we actually have the infrastructure in place to be successful.

Former Panthers QB Cam Newton to be throwing at Auburn's Pro Day
Seltzer replied to Saca312's topic in Carolina Panthers
It hurts that Cam didn't get a better ending. I love Rivera as a man, but it was ridiculous to continue to play Cam in 2016 after his shoulder injury. Between the mismanagement of his injuries, and the insulting and strategically stupid way Cam was let go, to trying to latch on to the Patriots late (and then getting Covid) to coming back here to be a part of Rhule's circus, Cam deserved so much better. I will always be a Cam fan (but please, please don't go to Atlanta). But for Cam, like the vast majority of both professional athletes and normal people in general, a storybook ending just wasn't/ isn't in the cards. I will die on the hill that there has never been an athlete as transcendently talented and who accomplished so much who has also been unfairly maligned in the matter Cam has been. -
Wouldn't mind taking a flyer on him

Quality depth on the Oline... is this even allowed in Carolina??!! Seriously, though, good signing. Isn't it such a wonderful to actually be optimistic about our Offensive Line going into the season?

CMC & DJ both loved being here and the fans. Anybody who cares would have the same initial response. The opposite of love is not hate or anger, it's indifference. Neither CMC nor DJ were indifferent. They honestly had the right to be angry as much as they cared. They are both special players, and I wish them well outside of when we play them. It was a business decision. It's over and done with, we just need to get our QB and move on.
-
Exactly. Which is why it's worth it to gamble to find that next franchise guy
-
I'm certainly hopeful it gets better with our offensive-minded coaching staff. God knows it couldn't be much worse. For all the success thus franchise has had in terms of drafting and developing LBers, our history with WRs has been as bad as any team in the league.
-
It was straight malfeasance to make Cam work with that
-
I know WR is currently a massive question mark with the loss of DJ. Hell, everyone should, and the national media is all over it. Having said that, I didn't start being a Panthers fan overnight, so I'm well attuned to our "glorious" tradition at WR. Look at these lists from 2010- Present. This list doesn't include WR's that went on IR during the corresponding season, but it gives you a flavor for what we have had to work with over the years. This current group heading into 2023 is obviously not great as presently constructed, but it's not going to take much to at least bring it in line with many of the other WR groups we've had over the past 13 years. And most importantly, I think there is an actual strategic plan to continue to build around Stroud/Young after this season. So undoubtedly, our WR corp is probably not going to set the world on fire in 2023, but if we're honest, for the most part over the past 13 seasons, it's not like we had a bunch of elite receivers besides an aging Smitty and Greg Olsen who wasn't even a WR. I think if we sign a couple of guys in FA and draft a WR, we will easily be on par with many of these groups. Anyway, was interesting to look back and gain some perspective. I think this team with a solid Oline and run game combined with a good offensive scheme is going to be just fine, especially in the NFC South this year. 2010 2015 2020 87 David Clowney 11 Brenton Bersin 11 Robby Anderson 10 Armanti Edwards 10 Corey Brown 14 Pharoh Cooper 12 David Gettis 82 Jerricho Cotchery 12 D. Ian Thomas is worth a roster spot as a blocker. Our room game down the stretch last years is nowhere as effective without him. I get he doesn't bring much as a receiver, but him taking a pay cut is a good move for both sides.

Panthers sign Bengals TE Hayden Hurst
Seltzer replied to TheSpecialJuan's topic in Carolina Panthers
This was a great signing IMO. Some people just want to crap on anything and everything. And this current TE group (even if we don't add to it), is certainly better than last years and better than a lot of the TE groups in franchise history. People are acting like we've traditionally had good TE groups. We've literally only had 2 Pro Bowl caliber TEs in team history in Walls & Olsen. Hurst could easily end up being the 3rd best. I'll take it 100%. Not sure why other fans wouldn't. -
Panthers agree to terms with Broncos DL DeShawn Williams
Seltzer replied to Saca312's topic in Carolina Panthers
Brayvion low-keyed played well last year. A really pleasant surprise. I think he can play a role on this defense too. -
Scott Barrett @ScottBarrettDFB Believe it or not… Last season, #Panthers QB Andy Dalton ranked: + 1st in Accurate Pass % + 3rd in depth-adjusted Cmp% + 6th in PFF Pass Grade All while throwing to a bottom-7 receiving corps
-
Exactly. That doesn't make us different from at least 25 other teams, maybe 31. That's why getting a franchise QB matters so damn much. B/c at that point, there are always veteran guys willing to come in for a chance at a ring.
-
That is the limitation. He's a starting caliber RB for his rushing ability, but he is not a complete back like CMC. Meaning a 3 down back. Not a knock bc I'd rather have a really good rusher (which he is) rather than someone who is mediocre at rushing and as a pass catcher out of the backfield. But honestly almost all RBs are fairly replaceable. I think a 2 year, 5M contract is fair for both sides, and I do want him back at that price
-
Outside of having to give up DJ (which definitely hurts), I can't imagine this offseason going any better. It's nice to have professionals running the show on Mint Street
-
Would be 2 wasted 3rd rounders in short order on QBs we hardly gave a chance to develop (Will Grier).
-
I think they see him as a NT primarily in 3-4 or DT in 4-3. Brayvion Roy actually played quite well last year and can play NT also. Both are good run stoppers. Henry Anderson (guy who had mini stroke last year) is also good against the run and can play DE in a 3-4. Not sure if he's under contract though

IF Cam Erving comes back cheap, would you want him back?
Seltzer replied to TheBigKat's topic in Carolina Panthers
I will say this, he seemed to be smiling and enjoying life last year here (who wouldn't be making bank to do nothing) and the other offensive lineman gravitated towards him. So maybe he is willing to come back cheap, bc like you said, it's the only way it makes sense I think James Campen will also have a say
