How much of the Jets performance was really on Darnold?
SBBlue replied to SBBlue's topic in Carolina Panthers
Sam should improve. If ever there was a case that QB went from a bad situation to a good one, this is it. CMC, DJ, Robbie, Arnold ,and D Moore and then if Marshal, Tremble and Shi Smith pan out...look out. I'm more worried about the oline than Sam. BC, Brown, and Moore are real wild cards here. I wonder if all 3 are starting before year end. -
How much cap space you have when you sign a contract matters. Buying a shty house for 1 million when you only have 1k is FAR WORSE than buying a shty house for 1 million when you have 100 million. In one case you mortgage your future, and in the other you've got money to burn. Mortgaging your future is worse than spending money you have. We got a mortgage to pay for Matt Kalil, talk about f ing stupid.
-
Uh huh. So now you think we should have kept Short in 2019. Then you can't call keeping him that year stupid or use it in your math for justifying how bad Short's contract was. But down below, you still do. Matt was the poster boy. 25 million for a turnstile is about as bad as gets. Matt Kalil is the poster boy of bad signings. Once again comparing 1 contract to the combination of everyone else. You had to make another post for this? You obviously have no basic understanding of what a poster boy is. You don't compare the poster boy to the entire group and say, see he's not the whole problem. Duh. He is representative of the problem, he isn't THE problem. We have the cap space now to sign Moton, with some to spare. This is wrong. Okung played 7 games, not 6 for 13 mill which brings his per game cost in line with Matts for MUCH BETTER PLAY. Especially considering a left tackle costs more in 2020 than 2017. Once again you included the 2019 year for Short which you just admitted above you wouldn't have cut him yet. Wow. Your ability to see the future is amazing. You knew before the 2019 just after Short went to the Pro bowl again, that Short's injuries would sideline him for 2019. But up above you said you wouldn't have cut him pre 2019. Do have as many posts railing to get rid of short in 2019 as you have spent here? You have to judge the contracts by what we knew at the time. Matt Kalil had been sht for years. We gave him a 5 year 50 million contract. Fortunately we cut early and only paid 25 million. The original contract is the poster boy of bad management. I would argue signing Shorts extension was good management. You will never convince me that Matt Kalil's 5 year 50 million contract made as much or more sense than Kawann Short 5 year 80 million extension. Only in hindsight do they look comparable because Short got hurt. KawanShort>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>MattKalil at the point of signing. You can try to convince me all you want that those contracts are on par. They simply aren't. Matt Kalil's contract is the poster boy of bad contract signings. That you put Short's extension, even in the same category....smh.

Tremble Projected to be 3rd Most Productive Rookie TE
SBBlue replied to Little Goody Two Shoes's topic in Carolina Panthers
" Tight ends were practically nonexistent in Brady’s system a year ago. They combined for an NFL-low 204 receiving yards, the third fewest from a tight end group in the last 10 years, behind the 2015 New York Jets (95) and 2016 Jets (173). Their 27 receptions, according to ESPN Stats & Information, were the second fewest in the NFL behind New England (18). Their two touchdown catches were tied for the fewest behind the Patriots and New York Giants, with one each. That played a role in red zone inefficiency. Carolina ranked 28th last season at 51 percent, ahead of only Dallas (50%), Cincinnati (50%), the Giants (46%) and the Jets (42%). On the other end of the spectrum, of the 13 teams with a winning record in 2020, nine had a tight end rank in the top two on the team in touchdown catches... (Greg) Olsen’s seven touchdown catches ranked second for Carolina in 2015 when it went an NFL-best 15-1 and reached the Super Bowl. The Panthers also ranked first in the NFL in red zone efficiency that season at 69.44 percent.... Carolina hoped last season that 2018 fourth-round pick Ian Thomas would step up, but he had only 20 catches for 145 yards and a touchdown. Chris Manhertz, known primarily as a blocker, had only six catches for 52 yards and no touchdowns.... The Panthers still hope Thomas can be a factor, but moved on from Manhertz. They instead signed Arizona’s Dan Arnold to a two-year, $6 million deal in hopes he can emerge. Arnold had 31 catches for 438 yards and four touchdowns at Arizona last season. Carolina also drafted Notre Dame’s Tommy Tremble in the third round. Known as an elite blocker in college where he had only 35 catches and four touchdowns, Brady believes Tremble can be a complete tight end. " -

Wow. Maybe you should take your blinders off. You are only hurting your case. Not helping it. -
And then you reply. You then make 3 points we agree on. The last one. Sheesh. I think you are hanging on to Short's contract. Maybe its the forest tree thing you keep talking about: Kawann Short Fantasy Football News - CBSSports.com - Page 3 " Panthers' Kawann Short: Replacement at Pro Bowl Kawann Short went to Sunday's Pro Bowl as a replacement for Rams defensive end Aaron Donald.Short missed the final two games of the season with a calf injury, but it seems he's healthy again. The soon-to-be 30-year-old remains under contract in 2019 with another gaudy $17 million cap hit. 01/15/2019 by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire Panthers' Kawann Short: Misses first games of career Kawann Short (calf) finished the 2018 regular season with 42 tackles (29 solo), three sacks and a forced fumble in 14 games played.Short was rested for Carolina's final two games while nursing a calf injury, marking the first couple absences of his six-year career. Although he remained a menacing interior presence, registering a personal-best 10 stuffs this term, the veteran didn't get to the quarterback as much as usual. After two sacks Week 1, Short only managed one the rest of the season. Considering he racked up 24.5 over the prior three years, Short should be eager to get back to his best in 2019. " Short's 2018 was a down year, but it wasn't as bad as you're implying and certainly not enough to cut him lose pre-2019. Cap space is not what is stopping us from signing Moton. There's your problem. They are all trees dude. Kalil is a giant big fat rotten tree, because he was one of the worst performing tackles in the league the one year he played for us on his 5 year 50 million contract. In the end he only cost us 25, but we shouldn't have signed him for 10. The guy was a turnstile, just as he had been for the Vikings ever since his rookie year. Teddy was not one of the worst performing quarterbacks the one year he played. He was mediocre. Okung, when he played, was better than Matt, and we paid him much much less. Stop comparing Speedbump Matt Kalil with GROUPS of other players, saying he's just a tree but the rest are the forest. They are all trees. As long as you have to grab a GROUP of contracts to compare to Matts, you are making my point. He wasn't the forest. He was a big fat rotten tree in the forest. The poster boy of bad trees. Who would you put on your poster?

Winning season. -
Defend Matt in same post: Attack Shorts contract: No one is saying Kalil is the ONLY bad contract. Not sure how to communicate that to you. Do you even know what a poster boy is? Its, a perfect example. You're arguing against 'poster boy' of Matt Kalil's contract is the same as you arguing that its not the perfect example of a bad contract. When it is. Who's worrying? smh The idea is to avoid dead cap. Mat Kail produced more dead cap than he did on the field. Hey we agree. Hey we agree again. Though some players when they don't perform allow us to restructure with reduction. That didn't happen with speedbump Matt Kalil. In summary, Matt Kalil's contract was a mistake the day it was signed. He played one horrific year for 25 million. Matt Kalil had already declined before we signed him. In contrast Kawan Shorts contract was a great contract when it was signed because it wasn't obvious at the time that he was going to decline. In fact he had been awesome. The cap situation when you sign a player matters. Dead cap matters. Its not 'just accounting'.

That video is excellent. It really deserves its own thread....I know its old, but what are we talking about now anyways? The question in the back of my mind is did the Jets break him? The way he played against the Browns and Rams late last year seems to indicate that he isn't broken. -
link:Ranking the NFC South LBs: Where does Panthers’ Shaq Thompson fit in? (usatoday.com)\ 1 Lavonte David 2 Devin White 3 Demario Davis 4 Deion Jones 5 Shaq Thompson " There’s a difference between being “good” and being “just good.” ... Thompson has lacked in coverage over the past two seasons, having now just come off a campaign where he allowed a 73.7 completion percentage on balls thrown his way. He hasn’t exactly been the dynamic game-changer he’s capable of being either, with just one interception and four forced fumbles in his six-year career. 2020 was particularly rough—perhaps his most disappointing year yet. Don’t count on another bummer for Thompson in 2021, though. With the defense around him taking shape and coming into its own, a little extra help and his flat-out undeniable talent could make for a fine bounce-back performance. "

@stbugs Panthers part ways with veteran left tackle Kalil (espn.com) " Former general manager Dave Gettleman signed Kalil in free agency prior to the 2017 season to fill a void on the line.... The five-year, $55.5 million deal for Matt Kalil, who missed most of the 2016 season for Minnesota with a hip injury, was criticized by league pundits. The criticism continued as Kalil struggled early in the 2017 season, receiving a 36.6 grade from Pro Football Focus that was one of the worst among starting left tackles. He missed the 2018 season with a knee injury. " Watching Kalil miss assignments and whiff blocks was maddening.
-
While those numbers may come as a shock to most fans, they make perfect sense. It’s rare to have such a dominant defensive lineman that can make such an impact on the entire defense outside of a dedicated pass rusher on the ends. A major part of the Panthers’ success can be attributed to the defensive line harassing quarterbacks and stopping the run, with Short at the forefront of it. "

Yes. Yes, since a player has to have a contract, it is important. Its just valid. It doesn't need to be more valid. Using team wins as stats for the OT one year and the QB in another year to determine who sucked worse has so many problems with it, I'm not going to even try. I was saying that Kalil had played better before, and Teddy had never played better, but if you want to say that was Kalil's best, fine. They both sucked. I do care. You should care about the cap too. I'm not sure where I said anything inflexible. Agreed. Correct. I said posterboy. Yes, 3 years after he played a snap. More than Newton, Olson and Luke. OK, not sure why you need to add 8 players together to compare to 1 player's cap hit, but ok. Agreed. Short, Turner, and Gano at least gave us some good years. Matt Kalil didn't give us one. I'm not overly concerned. Actually you seem overly protective of Matt and in your attempts to protect him you just throw a bunch of mud around. Good catch. WOAH. Ok. Now we disagree. Lets do this one. Short was awesome when we signed him. That man was fundamental to the 2015 run and had given a good year again 2016 before the contract. Kawann Short contract extension with Carolina is well-deserved | PFF News & Analysis | PFF Short’s run-defense grade of 85.4 ranked second among interior defenders last season. His pass-rush productivity has ranked in the top 10 each of the past two seasons, with a PRP of 7.7 last year. Short’s pass-rush grade of 81.2 was also in the top 10 at his position in 2016. It was great that we resigned a good player. Expecting the GM to see future injuries and player decline is unreasonable. You defend Matt Kalil's contract and attack Shorts', talk about not seeing the forest from the trees.

I agree a lot with your post. The OP is not trying to prove that he won't be a bust.... Basically when this was posted, there was a lot of shtposting on Darnold. I'm trying to make the point, that we really don't know what the kid has got...give him a chance. Don't sleep on Teddy, I wouldn't be surprised if he beats out Locke. Now if Rodgers heads there, well.... Pick 6: Odds Drew Lock or Teddy Bridgewater will be Broncos’ starting quarterback, Avalanche win Stanley Cup – The Denver Post -
Can we list rookies? I think its vets right?

I hear what you are saying, but to say that the cap is All accounting seems to gloss over how important the cap is....its more than just accounting. There are repercussion for going over the cap, and the cap is THE accounting that matters for the team. The date of the checks doesn't. There aren't payday or check casualties. There are Cap Casualties. There aren't NFL penalties for check dating. There are penalties for going over or subverting the cap. I don't care whether Matt actually got paid in 2017,2018,2019 or 2020. I do care that he ate up cap space all 4 years. Cap is accounting, but it has real consequences. We spent 25 mil. We got one BAD season. We wasted more than 5 mill on Mat Kalil. At least Teddy gave us his very best, for what it was. Mat Kalil gave us sht, and possibly his worst season. I agree. We need to pay good players to stay instead of always bargain basement shopping. That said, Gettleman thought he was tying down a probowl level LT with Mat Kalil...instead he got swindled.

Carolina Panthers' three-year salary cap forecast looks strong

Many times its moving compensation into the bonus which stretches it out over the next 3 years for cap purposes. I don't know the percentage of time the restructure is an actual reduction. -
BR's list of most overpaid players on every team
SBBlue replied to ladypanther's topic in Carolina Panthers
As soon as I saw the title, I guessed they'd put Erving. I have another thread with the research on this but if Erving plays as well as he did last year, he was worth the contract. If not well... I think Shaq will be better this year, with more help all around him. He'll never be Luke, but he can be good. I still believe. I'd probably pick Eiflin. -

Yes. I agree. They rely on the cap going up year over year. Yes and using saints strategies, we retain good talent. If they underperform we restructure.
