Sam Darnold comes in at No. 19 in Chris Simms' Quarterback rankings
SBBlue replied to SBBlue's topic in Carolina Panthers
I would have to say Rhule/Brady/Sam over Payton/Winston/Hill They way people talk about Darnold, I think of Winston. Talk about a ton of talent combined with bad decision making. I wouldn't be surprised if he gets benched for Hill. -

Oh I agree. QBR and PR are just indicators. I would never make QB decisions just on either of them and I can see where you got that from my post. We should cut him if the coaches determine his play was bad. If your play is bad, it is often reflected in the indicators. -

Some point to Tannehill as an example of a jump like that. He was older, had better success earlier in his career before Gase, and was battling injuries, so some argue its not a fair comparison. We really don't know what we have. You see flashes of a really good QB, there was just so much crap, it's hard to say. We'll find out. -

Maybe. I'm not clear on how high you want the bar set. It's unlikely he'll be a top 10 QB the first year on a new team, new system. He has to be better than Teddy. Teddy's Ranks QBR:17 PR 22 Tom Brady was 9 in both categories. If he's worse than Teddy, we'll probably cut the cord. -
Rappaport critical on Sam Darnold during McAfee Show
SBBlue replied to TheCasillas's topic in Carolina Panthers
Most of its earned. I've been watching all of the pressers. They ask impertinent questions. They repeat questions that other reporters asked because they weren't listening to other reporters questions. They call in to press conferences from their car, amusement parks, and restaurants where the background noise is distracting and the call breaks up so they have to keep repeating questions. Its unprofessional. When the player answers, or passes, they go into long winded explanation and then repeat the question, acting like there's something more there that the player is hiding. They ask questions about league policy that was released earlier in the day while the player was in camp so they haven't even had a chance to look at it. They try to create drama by asking one player about a dis they heard. The questions are long boring diatribes of information that the player already knows, trying to lead the answer in a certain way. Overall, just disrespectful, not only to players, but mostly to the audience. When you read the articles based on pressers, they are mostly fluff and crap, with 10% actual new news. Not all of the reporters are that way, but I'd say depending on the presser 1/3-2/3s.- 22 replies

Sam Darnold comes in at No. 19 in Chris Simms' Quarterback rankings

Yup. There's potential here, and there are a lot of analyst who believe that it has a reasonable potential to work. -
On Thursday all 3 analysts listed the reasons said that Darnold will improve in Carolina.

Sam Darnold comes in at No. 19 in Chris Simms' Quarterback rankings

Even back in April after the trade, before the draft he was up on the Panthers: "Carolina could be one of those teams this year where we go 'Woah. Where did they come from?'" -

I don't agree with everything Simms says, but I hope he's right here. I'd be happy with middle-ish of the pack performance. -
"When you're around crap and crap's all around you, you're going to start to smell like crap and get some crap on you too." "When I watch him on film, I see a guy who has a lightening quick release, can make every throw on the football field..." "He's a way better athlete than people give him credit for." "The guy went for a 52 yard touchdown against the Denver Broncos. Right up the middle. Weaved through everybody."

Why are you here if you don't want us to engage you on your strong opinions? I certainly didn't join the huddle to repeatedly predict the failure of the teams new QB. You're free to that. Just don't get upset when other fans defend. You call us homers and parrots, we call you wet blanket, and debbie downer. I'm here to cheer my team on and share my opinions. I'm curious about the basis for your "decision making" evaluation. I've watched some of Darnold's games, including all of his ints last year. I don't see a quarterback who makes an ungodly number of mistakes. Some of his ints were stupid, but some were tips at the line, others under pressure, some just impressive plays by excellent defenders who could drop back because the d could pressure without blitzing. He has a bunch of ints, but nothing off the charts. Is that the basis for "between the ears" assertion?

When you look at the talent between me and him...it should be scary...its nothing to take lightly. On the edge we're going to be good, but also look at the interior man,(laughs) and the talent that's there...I would definitely be worried.

link:Haason Reddick describes his outlook on what leadership looks like (panthers.com) Tough to evaluate the group, we're running in jersyes, this game is played in pads. There has been a lot of guys making plays. You hope it transfers over when the pads go on. Coach Rhule is pretty much similar to when he was in College. Hearing some of the same stuff I heard at Temple. It's good to see because it's worked for him. Getting players to buy into the process, to understand and build a culture. It worked at Temple, it worked at Baylor, and that's how he got here. He is sorta little more relaxed...at certain points he's a little bit calmer due to the fact that he understands that he is dealing with veteren players and guys on the highest level of football....its different than college. Not so hard on the players like he was in college. Feels good to have OTA's, but feels strange to be able to have them especially for a guy like me on a new team. To be here to come in now and get the know the guys before training camp. I can start building bonds with guys now and build my presence as a leader. David Newton asks about Darnold ...Darnold's completing passes. He looks like he's playing intelligent football. I don't know what he needs to work on. I'm just concerned with getting to him most of the time. I'm not his QB coach. I'm not his position coach. I don't play football on the offensive side of the ball. What I have liked is he's completing a lot of passes and thats good to see. On the Defense I do think the sky's the limit here man. We have a lot of great young talented players. We have some veteran players that has done a lot of great things in the league. If we can get the veteran players to show the younger guys how its done we can get the full potential out of the young guys and they'll be big assets. I do believe we have a lot of young guys with a lot of talent. We just have to put it all together. On Player Flexibility Now we're putting a lot a strain on the offense...when guys aren't in their usual position, they see a guy who usually has his hand in the dirt or usually on the line of scrimmage and now he's off the ball... you don't know if he's going to be covering, you don't know if he's blitzing...helps us keep the offense guessing. We're going to cause some confusion. Making plays. I wasn't on the team last year. The last thing you want is a guy coming in...trying to tell you what to do...its hard to just come in anywhere are start giving out advice. You need to build relationships with these guys... so they can come to you for advice on or off the field. Being in person now is a head start on that. OTA's are very important. In free agency a lot of different people went to a lot of different places this year. Minicamp gives new faces to the team a chance to get a head start on the playbook and also bonding with teammates and coaches. For the teams that didn't do that, we have a head start on them. How much is familiar A lot is similar to what I did in college under Phil Snow, and what I've also done in Arizona. Some of it is new. I like it . I really like where we're headed. Playing Opposite Burns Its special. When you look at the talent between me and him...it should be scary...its nothing to take lightly. On the edge we're going to be good, but also look at the interior man,(laughs) and the talent that's there...I would definitely be worried. The front 7, the d-line, we've got some dogs. On 5 sack games against Giants My main goal is not to be complacent. This is what separates... people get a little bit of the success and fall back of the gas pedal. I want to be better than I was last year.
-
Yeah. We know.
-
Hey we're in agreement. Darnold is not and will not be anywhere near a Rodgers type talent. Whatever talent he has was squandered in NY. I assume you're intentionally exaggerating what people are claiming to try to make your point look better. I thought we were discussing the comparison of Teddy's and Darnold's RAS scores and whether they matter a hill of beans when neither are a dual threat QB, like Cam.
-
It wasn't because he couldn't throw deep, it was because he had to loft the ball to get it there...giving dbs time to cover. Teddy could not throw darts. He knew this, which is why he didn't go deep often. We can lie to ourselves all we want, but in the end, Teddy did not have a strong arm. Teddy wasn't a genius either . Checking down when you need 15 yards, isn't smart. Checking down with short time and you have the field to cover, isn't smart. Fumbling at the goal line isn't smart. Throwing interceptions in the redzone and endzone, isn't smart. Not protecting the ball when scrambling, isn't smart. Blaming everyone else around you, isn't smart...even after you've left. Teddy had more time, more often with better receivers, better scheme, better coaching and better production from his teammates.... and still made all those mental mistakes. Teddy may prove everyone wrong, but we wondered if that was Teddy's ceiling.

Its going to be long preseason, and probably first half of the season until Darnold flops or shuts his critics up. We're going to be hearing bitching about Darnold the whole time. Here's PFF saying the Oline sucks, so Darnold will suck: Monson: The Carolina Panthers offensive line is in danger of derailing the Sam Darnold reclamation project | NFL News, Rankings and Statistics | PFF Here's BR saying we should trade for Minshew cause, well, Darnold sucks: 1 Trade Each NFL Team Should Offer Before 2021 Training Camp Starts | Bleacher Report | Latest News, Videos and Highlights Here's BR again, this time ranking our entire roster as worse than the Jets, nearly worst in the league mostly because, well, Darnold sucks: Ranking the 5 Worst NFL Rosters Entering 2021 Season | Bleacher Report | Latest News, Videos and Highlights Most of our offseason grades were lowered because of the Darnold trade. Even the draft grades were lower because we passed on Fields. If you're looking for more Darnold complaints, read half of @LinvilleGorge's posts. Though he was posting better there for a while. It wasn't my idea to trade for the guy, I wanted Fields. But he's our QB1 now, so I'm going to try to make the best of it.
-
You want Grier to be QB1?
-
Did you just post a conversation with yourself? I missed where someone was touting Darnold's RAS score. As @stbugs said, the RAS score doesn't measure for pocket QBs very well.
-
Oh I read it. I misunderstood you. I just didn't assume you were ripping Rhule... the guy trying to bring us a championship... I guess its the type of person you are. I really do feel sorry for you.
-
RAS score isn't everything.
-
Hey thanks for pointing that out. I wasn't referring to coach Rhule. I was refering to the reporter. The other guy on the thread apparently was insulting the coach. He's a gem.
-
I bet you're fun at parties.
-
I was talking about the press asking the question. Not the coach. You must love Rhule.... are you this positive in your communications with everyone?
-
We're talking about the press dude.
