Williams didn't play much his first year and became a 2nd team all pro. Moton didn't play much his first year and we franchised him. If you're concerned about BC you must have worried about Williams in the 2015 preseason and Moton in the 2017 preseason. We don't even know how much BC is going to play this year. You must be constantly "concerned".
-
You are conflating our guesses at what's going on with them not having "SOME idea" of where he'll play. The 1s have been Erving, Elflein, Paradis, Miller, Moton for a while now. BC has been taking his reps mostly at RT. Don't confuse us not knowing what their plan is, or liking the plan, with them not having a plan. Ignoring versatility in the NFL is the mistake. You can have MANY more players on a college team. There are 5 linemen, ~10 oline roster spots. If everyone one can play only one position, what happens when 2 linemen go down in the same position? Versatility on the oline is FAR more important in the NFL than in college.
-
So many people are upset over everything from QB to the oline....oh well. Some wanted us to pick oline the first 3 rounds. Horn, Marshal and the picks we gained from trading down, may all ball out and they will still be upset. Apparently Pat Meyer, Rhule and Fit think we are all underestimating Erving and Elflein. They coached up Scott, so I guess we'll see.
-
Apparently it wasn't last week. Sorry about that. It was in June, so who knows where he'll end up.
-
Rhule said last week he really sees him as a tackle and right now BC is taking reps on the right, which means he's behind Moton. I guess we'll see how much and where he starts.
-
Oline starts are often dictated by injury in addition to merit. Moton barely played his rookie year, let a lone start. The next year he started every game at RT. I've heard BC is taking reps behind Moton. Has BC taken reps at guard? If not, I don't think we should expect him to take Miller or Elflein spots.

I agree with the premise that it is not rare for day-2 olineman to start games. But mixing C, G and OT muddies the water a little bit, and not sure why exclude comp-picks. There were no day-1 guards last year, meaning a day-2 guard was the best in the draft. Looking specifically at tackles in 2020, there were 4 in day 2. Here are the number of games started in 2020: Ezra Cleveland:9 Josh Jones:0 Lucas Niang :0 Matt Peart :1

We are surprised because its early and we thought Moore had the best chance of the UDFAs to make the team due to need, senior bowl performance, rave reviews from non-panther draftniks like Brett Kollman, his appearance on TOP-UDFA lists, the recommendation from Trent Scott, and the history of small school and HBC players being under-drafted. We like to discuss who is most likely, if any, will make the team and could possibly one day become a starter like Norwell. Will any of our remaining UDFA make the team? Maybe Fisher?

For passing press% we were 25th in '19 and 10th in '20 . Acceptable. For rushing YBC/Att, we were 3rd in '19 but 25th in '20. WTF? Bucs were #1 in run D both years and the oline didn't change much. So why the decline? No CMC , Saints moved from 15th to 5th in run D, Bears and WFT on the schedule, we had a new scheme. I think Brady is focusing on really improving the run game this year, thus the emphasis on wide zone. Erving and Elflein grade SUBSTANTIALLY higher in run vs pass blocking and both have wide zone experience in Dallas and Minn respectively. They weren't looking for the best olinemen. They were looking for the best fit. I still hold out hope that the oline is not the disaster you predict.
-
Maybe they were hoping for Sewell, and thought Slater was a reach at 8, and couldn't find a trade partner. Erving was on par with Okung last year. Scott, Little, and Daley played the other snaps and are returning, so they figure LT performance should be about the same. Elflein is more up and down. Scott's pff at the chargers in 2019 was 49.4 . It was 60 last year. They may feel confident they can coach Erving and Elflein up like they did Scott.
-
I didn't think Moore would start day one, but I thought he had a future here. Well, I'm not to big to admit when I was wrong. I thought BC had a shot at LT, he's not even practicing there. I thought the Erving and Elflein contracts were cheap for their positions, so they could be depth, but it looks like they always planned for them to be the starters. We haven't played a preseason game yet, but crow is warming up on the stove. It is just so hard for me to wrap my head around the Erving & Elflein contracts. Both are injury riddled, below average lineman. We signed them immediately at the start of FA when other options were available. As depth, I could see it. Erving played fewer snaps that Okung last year. I just don't get what Fit and Rhule are thinking here.

Could be any number of reasons. Guard was crowded and we have other backups at center. Someone else must have shown better or we're making room for someone else. Is Greg Little making the team? 72 Taylor Moton T 75 Cameron Erving T 60 Pat Elflein G 61 Matt Paradis C 70 Brady Christensen T 78 Trent Scott T 67 John Miller G 77 Deonte Brown G 65 Dennis Daley G/T 74 Greg Little T 66 Mike Horton G 71 Sam Tecklenburg G 62 Aaron Monteiro T 63 Matt Kaskey T 73 Martez Ivey T Waived 68 David Moore G

Whenever he plays, it needs to be with 1st string Olineman when they are fresh. I would certainly limit it to something like 1st quarter each game.

Cmon click baby click.

Wouldn't that be nice.

I agree with a lot in here, especially Teddy's costs on the cap, but there is a lot of conjecture in here that may or may not be true. As you say, forest and trees, the cap problem wasn't Teddy. It was Hurney. With that in mind here is some more conjecture: 1)Teddy's contract played a big role in Hurney's firing. This was the biggest fked up contract that Hurney created while Tepper was here. Without Teddy as exhibit A, we might still be stuck with Hurney. Hurney probably wanted to keep Teddy to save face. After Hurney was gone, so was Teddy. 2)Kyle Allen went 5-7 in 2019, Teddy was 4-11 last year. We didn't beat a single winning team last year. Our record would not have been much different. The games we won because of D, we might have won with Allen, TB, or even PJ at QB. Which of those 4 games did you say, wow, Teddy saved our ass in that one? Are these points true? We don't know. Just as you don't know that Hurney would be gone or that we would have a worse record with Allen or PJ. I liked Teddy, I hated his contract. He made mistakes and I was hoping for more. It is what it is.

At fan fest? Little much imho.

Don't forget BC. 3rd round tackle, 2nd round guard.
-
You need another 80's tune in there, one with a key-tar: Am I showing my age?
-
True. TBF I'm not sure I'd feel great with our punt returner being a 6th round rookie. LS, not so worried. My guess is Moore. He averaged something like 9 yrds a return last year for Seattle.

Carolina Panthers Training Camp - Thursday Thread

There's enough data to support that Darnold is a better QB than commonly thought. Sam's int% was 3.0% last year. There are examples where QBs moved to a better team with a better scheme and dropped their int% from ~3% down to ~2%. Darnold and the jets beat two teams with winning records (ie good teams) last year. How many did we beat last year? -

From Rhule with the media today: Is Daquan kind of a veteran day off? Yeah yeah I gave him a vet day... I watched him with tape yesterday he's sprinting to the ball down the field …I gave him today so he went lifted and then got a little rehab and came out . -

Carolina Panthers training camp: 5 observations from practice Day 8 (catcrave.com) " Carolina Panthers OLB Julian Stanford ... Shaq Thompson and Denzel Perryman haven’t been risked due to minor injuries. This has allowed Stanford to see time with the 1s and he’s been a constant presence at the second level, really catching the eye according to those observing from the hill. This is a big boost to Stanford’s chances of making the team. Carolina isn’t blessed with the greatest depth behind the top quartet, so he could be a surprise contributor with a full offseason with the Panthers to call upon this time around. " -

Carolina Panthers training camp: 5 observations from practice Day 8 (catcrave.com) " Carolina Panthers LB Clay Johnston’s first-team reps ... Denzel Perryman and Shaq Thompson weren’t able to recover from injuries quickly enough to participate fully, leaving the former seventh-round pick with a firm chance to stamp his mark in drills. Johnston is going to be a fun player to watch in the preseason. His boundless enthusiasm for football came across in a big way with the Los Angeles Rams on HBO’s Hard Knocks last summer and although it wasn’t enough to make the team, he was part of the Panthers practice squad all of last season. This is a solid foundation from which to build in pursuit of making the roster in 2021. Johnston is familiar with Matt Rhule from their time together in college and working with the “1s” was another big boost to his confidence ahead of warmup games. The chances of Johnston cracking the starting lineup appear slim. Jermaine Carter seems to be the starter at inside linebacker with Perryman also a key member of the rotation. But making the roster will be a massive achievement for the enthusiastic Johnston regardless. It’s a small step. But in Johnston’s mind, a pretty significant one. " -

Training Camp Notebook: Just Play Ball | Carolina Blitz " The team scrimmaged more Thursday than any other day during training camp. Sam Darnold showed off his ability to scramble to extend drives. During one possession the first-team quarterback kept a drive going with his feet, gaining 4 yards and a 1st down. Darnold also rushed for 7 yards on 2nd down during a different possession. The Panthers struggled mightily in the red zone last year. The team worked specifically on that yesterday and today. Rhule acknowledged that on both days the offense “functioned well” in those situations. "
