Albert Breer's Five Observations from Panthers Camp
Jackie Lee replied to Mr. Scot's topic in Carolina Panthers
1. The staff is really optimistic that C.J. Henderson, the ninth pick in the 2020 draft who was traded from Jacksonville to Carolina last fall, has turned a corner. The Florida product, who’s had mental health issues through his career, came to camp locked in and ready to go, and is showing signs of putting his impressive package of physical gifts together. A couple people went so far as to say, through the last three weeks, he’s become one of the Panthers’ best players. 2. Veteran safety Xavier Woods has been a revelation, coming to the Panthers on relatively short money (he did a three-year, $15.75-million deal in March). He’s a good player to begin with, but where he’s really made a difference is in how he’s improved the communication on the back end of the defense. It’s early still, but Woods has given every indication that he’ll be a glue guy for Phil Snow’s unit. 3. I wouldn’t be surprised if Baker Mayfield wins the starting job really soon—he’s been the team’s best quarterback through camp. He’s impressed the staff with his ability to process (which was questioned at times in Cleveland), his timing and his field vision. With those qualities highlighted, Mayfield should be an effective distributor for what still is a really talented skill group. 4. With some of the draft capital the team has spent on vets the last couple years (Sam Darnold, Mayfield, Henderson, Stephon Gilmore), it’s important for Carolina to hit on a Day 3 pick or two, and it looks like they may have one in Shi Smith. The 2021 sixth-rounder has shown quickness and explosion working underneath, and seems ideally suited to fill a role in the slot for the Panthers.5. For all the slings and arrows, there’s talent on the Carolina roster, and there aren’t many position battles, outside of the one that will conclude soon at quarterback. One great development has been Ickey Ekwonu being ready to roll at left tackle, which has essentially settled what has been a problem position group for the team the last few years. The sixth overall pick is steadily improving, had a really good couple days in Foxboro, and there’s a reason why Matt Rhule was willing to anoint him Week 1 starter earlier in the week at one of the most important positions on the field. 5. BAKER MAYFIELD Stats (unofficial): 10 for 16, TD Best throw: Mayfield fit a tight ball into a small window for Moore’s red-zone score. The pass dropped just underneath the goal post as Moore toe-tapped the end line. Notable mistake: Most impressively, Mayfield did not turn the ball over during either practice against New England. SAM DARNOLD Stats (unofficial): 13 for 18, 2 TDs, 2 Int It was his best drive of training camp. He completed 5 of 7 passes. Darnold scored with less than 90 seconds to play after starting on his own 30-yard line. But the irony is the drive should not have happened. Darnold’s initial two-minute drive began with an interception. On his very first play, Darnold dropped back and fired a quick hitch toward Moore. But it was intercepted by Patriots cornerback Jalen Mills, who sat on the route. There are no mulligans on Sundays, but Rhule let Darnold start the drive over. Yeah we basically have a 3-4 d-line roster but run a 4-3 or 4-2-5ish kinda thing. Not sure if it's by design or what. Burns/Barno/Luvu/Smith/Haynes can all speed rush but shouldn't be relied on to take OT's 1v1 in the run game
-
Notice how every interview recently Sam is like "I can only control blah blah" and Baker is like "We this and that". Semantics at this point

Live game preview at 9, PNP talking to a Pats Youtuber of some sort, usually a good watch

TE Eric Ebron wants to play for the Panthers
Jackie Lee replied to hepcat's topic in Carolina Panthers
558 yards and 5 tds in 2020, haven't had anywhere near that in years. Starting to think Tremble isn't gonna be much of a pass threat -
I think Sam had at least 1 pick in 1v1's and 2 in team drills today. Would be nice if a media member would write up something detailed
-
Anyone get any clue if Baker/Sam are playing Friday? Seems dumb to sit 2 guys just because you won't pull the trigger on naming a starter. Would be interesting if Baker got to sit and Sam was out there with the 2's to start the game
-
Don't we already have like 3-4 TE's out right now?
-
Yeah I know it was against 2nd/3rd string but I'd put Mays and Pleasants above Jordan/Erving asap. They looked like they actually knew what they were doing and wanted to do it.
-
They also worked rookie Cade Mays more at center on Wednesday. He's taken some snaps in the middle throughout camp though most of his work has come at guard. He's a versatile player, and that helps his chances of making the 53-man roster.
