Sparano got passed over with the Campen hire. So obviously he's not too thrilled about that. But the OL definitely under-performed with his coaching last season so it's to be expected. Sparano has the chance to work with a former colleague and get a fresh start. That sounds like a good move for his career. Especially since the Giants are expected to take an LT with an early pick and their OL will likely bounce back right away.

Those guys would get completely drunk every SB so recovery time was necessary. Bosses knew hung-over employees wouldn't be too good for the workplace.

Hire Brian Flores as a coaching consultant.
BlitzMonster replied to hepcat's topic in Carolina Panthers
I think Flores is a good coach. But I can't see him being employed by an NFL team in the near future (and maybe never). Here's a guy who's brought suit against all of the NFL clubs. Who's to say if someone hired him, he won't bring another suit if his contract isn't renewed or he isn't hired as the HC. Plus the media always talking about the lawsuit. And, obviously, his attention would be only partially on the team with the distraction of an active lawsuit. -
Not a surprise at all. Brand new ST coach Chris Tabor wants to go with the sure-thing vet over a rookie who's never played a snap in the NFL. Don't fix what ain't broken.

I knew many guys at work who would schedule vacation on Monday after Super Bowl to recover.

Any new coach would drop Pickett like a hot potato. Nobody would tie themselves to a mediocre QB prospect. Much better to cut him and start off fresh with your own choice that fits your system. Don't put your energy toward resurrecting the failures of the previous regime.

Might be true. I think he was listed at 290 at Iowa which is on the light side for an NFL OL. But this is "lying season" so it's tough to believe anybody right now. That may just be a team hoping Linderbaum will fall into the 20's.

LaCanfora asks evaluators about Pickett...
BlitzMonster replied to Mr. Scot's topic in Carolina Panthers
Do you remember the 2017 draft when Chicago got hoodwinked by SF into trading up one spot for Trubisky. God that Chicago GM was an idiot. No. 2: San Francisco → Chicago (D). San Francisco traded a first-round selection (2nd) to Chicago in exchange for Chicago's first-, third-, and fourth-round selections (3rd, 67th, and 111th) as well as a third-round selection in 2018 -
I have a lot of faith in Coach Campen fixing the OL this season. That means sorting out Brady Christensen and Deonte Brown and actually playing them. That was such an obvious mistake of the team last year. Also I'm sure there will be at least one IL added in free agency. Maybe two. Those positions are relatively cheap and it gives Campen something to work with. And given Campen's reputation, there will be guys specifically interested in playing for him. So I think the OL next season will be adequate. Maybe not strong like the team could have with one of the top LT in this draft. But an OL that is OK. Which would be a huge improvement over last season.

Assuming adequate NFL arm strength (can make a throw to the outside hash), the most important QB qualities by far are reading defenses, decision making and accuracy. The first two are impossible to determine in shorts and t-shirts. But they can be learned over time. Accuracy is partly a mechanical thing and partly decision making. Josh Allen has improved tremendously his first few years in the league so it can be done. But generally you get what you draft. -
If all three LT are off the board it comes down to: Tyler Linderbaum C IOWA - a team need but a center at #6 ? Kyle Hamilton S NOTRE DAME - Maybe the best athlete in the draft. A need & would help our defense tremendously. He might allow Chinn to go back to LB, which would help 2 positions. But it's also strange to take a S this high. Hamilton would immediately be one of the highest paid S in the NFL Derek Stingley Jr. CB LSU - another great talent and a fair payscale but definitely not a team need Nakobe Dean LB GEORGIA - probably the best overall combination of top talent and a team need Bernhard Raimann LT CENTRAL MICHIGAN - huge LT and looks great but a converted TE so only has 2 years of experience. Do you risk such a high pick on a prospect ? Panthers would be in kind of "no man's land" at this point. So trading back for extra picks would probably be the best move if you could find a team to trade with. A lot of these same guys would still be available in the next 5-10 picks.

Those two are the most ready now while still having at least "good" upside. -
If all these decisions come from Rhule realizing his own limitations, I will be very impressed. That kind of self awareness (of one's own weaknesses) is not very common. If these decisions are from on high (Fitterer or even Tepper) then it's being forced on Rhule. He got voluntold to jettison the Temple/Baylor retreads and hire some real NFL coaches. Time will eventually tell what's going on behind the scenes . . .

He'd be coaching a very good group at Carolina. And Horn comes back as well this year to add even more elite talent. A lot to like . . .
-
The latest mock draft I saw had all three LT going by #7. So it seems the talent in this year's LT class is recognized by just about everybody.

Matt Coral from SI 90 prospects in 90 days
BlitzMonster replied to raleigh-panther's topic in 2023 NFL Draft
Corral might be the best of the bunch in 2022. SEC tested. Good arm strength & athleticism. Overall a solid prospect for several offensive systems. Probably better than Willis (a huge project) or Pickett (concerns about how high his ceiling is). -
I'm not sure who the impetus is for these recent hires. But I am really pleased to see so much NFL experience being added to the Panthers coaching staff. Long overdue.
-
high praise for Raimann
-
Sure, that's an option. But there are always two sides to any trade. And who wants to trade up in this draft ? Usually trade-ups are for the hot QB. And this year there really aren't any.

BlitzMonster replied to Mr. Scot's topic in Carolina Panthers
The Texans really like QB David Mills and he came on strong at the end of the season. The guy is reportedly staying all off season at the Houston facilities to work on his game. And some of the young receivers are joining him. So that's a QB who's likely on the rise. And the team recognizes that. I really doubt the Texans would take a QB in 2022 with this draft class. The big talk on their message board is whether the team should go DE or OL with their #3 pick. -
The lack of support given to young Cam still infuriates me. Oh what could have been . . .
-
If all 3 LT are gone, I wouldn't hate one of the top defensive players. They have elite talent and that's what you want to add to your team. If one has a long-term perspective on team building, that would be a good decision. The offense would still suck in 2022 but Rome wasn't built in a day. Maybe consider Iowa C Tyler Linderbaum if Coach Campen absolutely loved him.

If I were Tepper, I'd call Rhule into my office the day before the draft and ask who he was going to select. If he said Pickett, I'd fire him on the spot. -

In all seriousness, a committee of the top posters from the Huddle would have done so much better than the Panther GM's over the last 5 years. Get a group together of 10 well respected posters on this board and come to consensus decisions on the team direction and draft / FA choices. I'm sure it would have been a huge improvement over the chaotic mess that has occurred lately for Carolina. Stupid decisions, horrible contracts, no long term plan, no foresight. Just an embarrassment. -

I would literally take Derek Singley (CB LSU) or Kyle Hamilton (S Notre Dame) over Pickett. They would be dumb choices considering our team needs but at least these guys have elite talent. Pickett looks like, at best, a mediocre game-manager. And, more likely, just a long term backup.
