Former NFL LB makes Bold Statement on Panthers Defense
Michael G replied to CarolinaLivin's topic in Carolina Panthers
I think Phil did really well late in the year after the defense really struggled early. Its possible that the lack of OTAs and needed reps and cohesion played a big role in the poor start. I am excited to see what He can do with the new pieces and a better offseason and more access to his players. Baylor fans were excited about him when he was there apparently- check out the GIF -
Nah! Luke's wouldn't be taking shots at anyone, unless he's getting ready for Hunting Season!

Better Look at the full size Helmet (Black/Blue)

I guess this depends on the operational definition of "tradeable." I think if we define tradeable as someone who has value but is expendable, that fits Robbie more than Burns or CMC (No offense Robbie, the Bear isn't gonna trade you). Even Though Burns and CMC may be more valuable- there are not as "tradeable" because we can't replace what they do (and are capble of doing) as easily as we can probably replace Robbie's production. That said- I like RA and have no doubt that he may actually be better than many of us think.

I would say the Saints, mainly because of the trash talk between Cam N. and Cam Jordam, the broom gift, Greg Williams defense getting paid bounty for hurting players and even Sean Payton drafting Tommy Stevens so he didn't sign with us a UDFA.

Will Special teams be "Special" This Year?
Michael G replied to Michael G's topic in Carolina Panthers
There was a lot of his famous "coach speak" in that presser. He said that Matt Amendola (UDFA Kicker from last year) was brought in for Rookie Mini Camp and did a "Great Job"- They cut him after mini-camp. He then said that Slye needs to "focus" after he used a golf analogy where the golfer takes two swings and they take the better of the two. He was basically saying Slye was too inconsistent, because you don't get 2 kicks and only the best one counts. But right now Sly is the only kicker on the roster so Im guessing Matt Amendola didn't really do a "Great Job" in mini camp, or maybe they wanted to use the roster spot to look at other people during OTA's knowing they can bring Amendola back in later, if Slye is kicking erratically in Camp. -
Will Special teams be "Special" This Year?
Michael G replied to Michael G's topic in Carolina Panthers
I was thinking they'd be at least some competition in camp but they already let the other K they brought in (M. Amendola) go. Right now its Joey Slye's show again. -
So our core special teams most likely will be: K- Joey Slye P- J. Charlton LS- T. Fletcher (Unless Jansen has him assassinated or he just starts snapping to ball into the ground during camp) KR/PR- Shi Smith/T. Cannon (or maybe some other guys depending on camp battles) Will these guys be special? Does anyone foresee it shaking out differently? Please tell me what you think.

Most news outlets that I've seen mention Indy, Tenn, and Baltimore. Then there's the reports that say he wants to play with Cam in NE. So far nothing points to him in the division that I've seen, but with our Luck he'll wind up in TB somehow.

I heard they are packaging him with Matt Ryan to GB for Aaron Rodgers and some draft capital! My source is the Wino in downtown Charlotte mentioned in another thread! JK

Yeah- I think FIT realizes that Robbie will probably have another good year especially with a QB who can push the ball down the field and RB like CMAC who will keep the defensive honest and be the keyed on offensive player. It will be tough to pay Robbie what he could be worth next year. We will probably have to let him walk. Robbie had a lot of value before the draft as a trade piece (in most other years), but we probably couldn't get what FIT wanted because of how loaded the draft was this year with WRs. I'm glad he's still here for another year, I hope he balls out, we win a lot of games and he and the team figures something out on an extension to keep him around if possible.

Hard to tell whose fault that is really...It looks like Cannon fell down. I wonder if the ball was supposed to be placed to his outside, instead of inside and underthrown a bit. Either way its a great break by Horn.

The clip with CMC from Darnold. I hope they play reps from motion like that more this year. In the past CMC goes into motion and stops- I like it when its timed with the snap and there's just a pause to let the DB/LB responsible stop and then CMC is gone into his route before the covering player can recover...its almost like a double move.
-
- Referencing Tommy S. Yeah maybe he'll be able to give a block for CMC or Chuba if they take a direct snap, or if he flexes out wide as part of a wildcat. If they add that type of stuff. He is still listed as a QB on the roster.

According to Klein- Matt Rhule is giving an in-person press conference right now...

A few Tweets by Josh Klein as he is watching drills....

Another shot of Tommy Stevens working as a TE
-
It is. That looked like Tremble and G. Ricci. I had forgot about Ricci, he's another big receiver in college who converted to TE (undrafted I think).

I think Chinn gets to play FS in those looks because he is fast and long, and there isn't anyone else the coaches trust to make those plays (covering the whole field) on the backend right now.
-
I think the importance of FS depends on the exact defensive package the team is using. Last year we didn't run a lot of sets with a true Centerfield FS, whose responsibility was the back end sideline to sideline. We used a lot of zone with split safeties (Two guys each covering their side of the field). With the addition of Jaycee Horn and others the team is looking to move away from soft zone coverages more often and play more press man coverages. In many (but not all) defensive sets that use man coverage you often would use the traditional FS as the deep centerfielder- so that's why some people are concerned. I think Chinn will be used in that role but how much we really don't know. It could depend on how good our corners handle the press man coverage responsibilities. It may be something we use primarily on 3rd down depending on distance and Chinn would be in the box on 1st and 2nd. Who knows? I don't, hopefully the team will put something together that works well.

* I limited my answers to players who have not yet taken a snap as a panther to keep myself from repeating some of some of the previous choices High- Daquan Jones (The DL overall): I think he will really control the middle of the line of scrimmage and absorb double teams that will allow D.Brown, D. Nixon and/or Edge Rushers to get into opposing backfields frequently Fence/Unsure- Sammy Darnold I know he's been mentioned a lot but I can't pick anyone else here. So much of our team's success this year depends on him turning things around and I 'm not sure that he will get it together even though he himself has talent and more talent around him- Injuries, poor decisions, bad habits--its gonna take a lot of work by him and the coaches. Low- Pat the Elf and Cam Erving: Like Sammy D. these guys are reclamation projects. How many reclamation projections turn out to be successful? I really think the O-line could be in trouble again, especially if Christensen can't contribute. Erving and Elf haven't been very successful despite their versatility and scheme fit, so yeah I'm not high on these guys. I hope they and the coaches prove me wrong.

Here's a link to an article in Pantherswire. It gives the #s for everyone of the 90 man roster except the new DT that recently signed (C. Reid). https://pantherswire.usatoday.com/gallery/carolina-panthers-90-man-roster-jersey-numbers-otas/

RB/FB Roster Projections-Who Stays? Who Goes?
Michael G replied to Michael G's topic in Carolina Panthers
I stand corrected. Thanks!
