It's interesting taking a stroll down memory lane. Sobering too. Beginning with the 2011 draft. The entire draft outside of Cam Newton were off the team within 2 seasons. That's insane. https://www.pro-football-reference.com/teams/car/2011_draft.htm The 2012 draft we gave Cam Newton Joe Adams in the 4th round https://www.pro-football-reference.com/teams/car/2011_draft.htm The 2013 draft we gave him Edmund Kugbila and Kenjon Barner https://www.pro-football-reference.com/teams/car/2013_draft.htm The 2014 draft we finally gave him a first round WR. Who he then proceeded to lead us to a Super Bowl without. https://www.pro-football-reference.com/teams/car/2014_draft.htm The 2015 draft we gave him Devin Funchess Daryl Williams and Cameron Artis Payne https://www.pro-football-reference.com/teams/car/2015_draft.htm The 2016 draft after a Super Bowl appearance we gave him Beau Sandland https://www.pro-football-reference.com/teams/car/2016_draft.htm 2017 is the year where we went big with our first 3 picks. CMC Curtis Samuel and Taylor Moton. Unfortunately by then it was too late as seasoned Panthers fans know. https://www.pro-football-reference.com/teams/car/2017_draft.htm In conclusion. That's the prime years of the only MVP in franchise history where we basically did fug all in the draft offensively. I mean this is night and day compared to the OL investment today and 2 first round WR's in the first three seasons. Let's put away the violin.

KB could have been another Mike Evans. Guy was just a headcase and didn't want to be great. But the talent was there. But yes we had a former QB at WR we had a former defensive lineman at left tackle at one point on top of keeping Byron Bell for too long. There was that one preseason where Corey Brown had like 20 drops. Ted Ginn was notorious for it and nearly lost us that Giants game in 2015 over it. First overall picks have to flash even in the less than ideal circumstances. Why this is a controversial or unfair notion now is beyond me but it's always been that way.

This simply isn't true no matter how many times you or anyone else tries to spread lies. Predraft I wanted Stroud over Bryce yes. But once the pick was made I was fully in support of our pick. I even defended the guy from some other people still clowning on him about being small in preseason of 2023. But everything changed once he started playing poorly in his rookie season. There were variables that contributed to his struggles but he hurt the team a lot too. He ended up finishing with one of the statistical worst rookie seasons in decades. There were many people concluding he was a bad pick. I still didn't outright call him a bust though. Now 2024 the stakes got even higher. There was a great deal of back and forth leading up to the regular season that year. Bryce made some comments about taking time off and doing mundane things and that didn't go over particularly well. Eventually things got quite contentious and there were many heated arguments heading into camp. I actually left for a few months to see how things would go and predictably all the derailed threads and bitter disputes continued. That preseason of 2024 there were also many discussions about our lack of playing starters and how preseason ultimately didn't matter. Then we opened the season with Bryce putting in two of the worst QB perfomances in a long time in two of the worst losses in a long time. Ultimately Bryce played better down the stretch after the benching. But there is still a great deal more we need to see from him early and across the entire upcoming season. He needs to play like a top 15 QB. It simply has to happen given where we drafted him and the pieces that we have built around him. He's got more than other QB's have had to work with especially along the offensive line. But if your opinion is that anyone that is concerned he may regresses again are simply haters I would argue it's you that is the problem. Every other QB before Bryce has faced these questions and criticisms. None of it is new. None if it will ever stop. That comes with the territory of the position and it is the same across the league.

Josina Anderson: Panthers NOT trading Adam Thielen
frankw replied to TheSpecialJuan's topic in Carolina Panthers
The Panthers FO and staff should be focused on actually developing their young WR's especially their two first round picks from '24 and '25 instead of airing out this real housewives level drama on social media. They had to significantly overpay just to keep him around. Desperation has rarely been kind to this franchise. Just move on already. -
"How dare you want a competitive QB room! Say it with your chest haters!" As if it's completely far fetched to suggest Bryce Young may struggle at some point.

Rippadon if I'm not mistaken. Between Trask and Corral he hitched his wagon to some duds.
-
Hoping for a swift recovery for you.

Yeah he was right about POS Matt Rhule. Unfortunately for him he promptly faded with the ensuing teams he played on after that. I think he'll be fine in spot duty under Bowles though.

Would be worth it for the entertainment value alone. Heads would explode. -
He had the best statistical season but basically the tallest midget in comparison to the rest.

1 year contract worth 1.25 million. And yes sadly he's better than our QB2.

I'd lean more towards Todd Bowles and the Bucs GM. Baker always had the phsyical tools. It was his mouth and his ego that got him into trouble. But Bowles like DeMeco Ryans for Stroud in Houston is the common thread. When you have the right head coach you can remove and replace coaches and keep chugging along. We need to see Canales emerge as that type of presence this season. -

Matt Rhule had no clue how to develop a QB let's be real. And at this point it remains to be seen if Dave Canales is worthy of his QB whisperer reputation. -

Handing Ryan Fitzgerald the keys and seeing what happens was the only move. -

Or he looked better in practice because he had on a red jersey. There will be other options anyways. -

In 3 preseason games he had 191 passing yards 3.4 yards per attempt 42.9% completion 1 TD 2 INTs. Possibly a downgrade from even Plummer. -

Let's pause a sec and rewind. The hype for Bryce Young before we drafted him was beyond anything I've seen in a long time. If you're trying to tell me now after all the hoopla about his ability to make those around him better and the comparisons to hall of fame players across different sports leagues that him taking the next step this year fully hinges on Adam Thielen then we're probably already doomed. Thielen is not going to keep any defenses up at night. He has good hands and very low YAC. We have 4 young WR's ahead of him with potential that need crucial development and we certainly need to find out what we have in them sooner rather than later because regardless of what transpires this season the QB room should undoubtedly be getting a hard reset. Those reps need to go to the young WR's regardless. Bryce needs to step up and take ownership of the relationship between himself and his young receivers. That's why we drafted him.

Plummer the first cut. How fitting. -
Just so we're clear. The discussed compensation for a 35 year old player who won't be here next season was a 4th. We recently took Etienne and Ransom in the 4th and both look promising. Are you suggesting they're scrubs?

Panthers starters average age: 25.59 Texans starters average age: 26.08 Regardless of the Thielen trade or no trade the Panthers coaching staff have got to elevate this roster. It's inexcusable looking at the shape our division is in currently.
-
Look at a team like the Texans who already have two playoff wins after being one play away from the first overall pick less than 3 years ago. Their oldest backup QB at any point since drafting Stroud is 26 years old. He also has a playoff win. Their wide receivers have never been older than 31 and that was Diontae Johnson last year as nothing more than a depth move after an injury who is anything but a veteran mentor. Beyond that virtually every receiver has been 23-27. They have one guy right now who is 29 the same age as Renfro. They have talent but they do not have head and shoulders that much more talent than the Panthers and they do not rely on aging veterans to a fault. At some point we cannot keep making excuses for our FO and staff.

I think it's a myth you absolutely need vets at those positions just for your young talent to display even marginal levels of competency. It's a cop out for your coaching staff who should be up to the task.
