So not remotely a threat to Bryce Young? There's your answer.

Dak will be 32 next summer. Draft Shedeur and hope the swag infusion alone will uplift this poverty franchise.

I got a random call from an enthusiastic Panthers sales rep trying to get me to buy PSL's on Wednesday. She was very pleasant and just doing her job but I almost laughed at her when she unironically asked me why I was hesitant to make such an investment. I politely informed her the team needs to perform significantly better for that to be under any level of consideration.

So maybe actually give your top overall pick a healthy nudge and add another young QB that wasn't hot garbage in college? The Lions had a top offense last year. They nearly went to the Super Bowl. Our Panthers had the league's worst offense and it wasn't particularly close either. We were at times in a league of our own we were so putrid. You and I both know that's a laughably desperate connection you tried to make.

This is our 2nd offensive head coaching hire in back to back seasons. We look as bad or worse so far. It's a results league. You don't like it? Hey that's cool. But even mediocre franchises are finding ways to look at least partially competent offensively. Yes his offense needs to establish some semblance of competence soon. Were you one of those fans here that talked down to others last year about how bad we looked in preseason wasn't indicative of how we'd look in the regular season? You seem like the type.

The Panthers were too focused on making the worst starting QB in the league last season as comfortable as possible to draft a developmental QB. Washed up journeyman Andy Dalton and one of the worst UDFA QB's available are all we get. This team better look night and day against the Jets with the starting lineup or Canales is going to start getting the Rhule/Reich treatment. The honeymoon ended 3 quarters ago babycakes.

Someone is going to have to clue Dave Canales in that this is not the way to introduce your vision for the future to the fanbase when they just witnessed probably the worst season offensively for any NFL team in many years. You sit 30ish starters and say you want to evaluate your depth? Okay. Well your offense better at least look halfway competent. This is a shitshow and what you set yourself up for when you bring attention to yourself by breaking away from what many other teams in the league are doing.

3 and out. Panthers football baby!

I wish you and your family nothing but the very best and hope for a successful recovery for Mr. Scot.

With Icky he either develops and plays better or we move on at left tackle. There wasn't a whole lot for Morgan to do there time being. But the center situation he Canales all of us fans and the players have seen coming a mile away. We took a big risk with the middle of our line. Now we're having buyers remorse already. Understandably many fans don't want to hear excuses.

If you have to sit your first overall pick to get a look at your OL then your GM has some explaining to do. The OL has been an issue every year for how long now?

Bryce Young won't play in preseason opener
frankw replied to Carolina Panthers's topic in Carolina Panthers
The best direct comp situationally is Sam Howell. Bad football team. Bad franchise. Bad offensive line. He was sacked even more times than our QB. Yet he still finished 12th in total passing yards and 12th in passing yards per game. His turnovers and decision making were his undoing. But you can have a bad situation around you and still move the ball. Comparatively BY was 35th in passing yards per game. Just barely ahead of Kenny Pickett and Tyson Bagent. The latter of which truthfully outperformed Bryce in our match up against the Bears last season. Howell was sent packing for his gaffes despite the circumstances he faced. Bryce is being held out of the first preseason game after one of the worst rookie seasons ever. So far the Panthers are only making a mockery of themselves. -

It's interesting to me that some people are entertaining the frame of thought that our starting QB and first overall pick isn't playing in the first preseason game because the rebuilding Patriots with their mediocre roster play dirty football. But they for some reason gloss right over the fact that based on this line of reasoning you basically have to sit him all of preseason. Because if you think the Jets and Bills in particular aren't paying attention to this you are dreaming. If we play BY against either of those teams you can bet their defensive staff and players will go out of their way to test Bryce Young early and often. The only word that comes to mind is fragile. That is what we are presenting to the league the year after one of the worst offensive performances from any QB ever. I do not understand how any rational fan can look at that and think things are going well in any way. -
Two bad teams squaring off in preseason. I'm hoping to be pleasantly surprised. But I know my Panthers.

Bryce Young won't play in preseason opener

I've tried to fall back and genuinely take a cautious optimism approach heading into week one given I think Canales has some traits that could help him become one of the leagues better young coaches. But man this franchise is just brutal to their own fanbase time and time again. The offense was horrendous in preseason last year and we were told it didn't matter that they would turn things up in the regular season. We finished as one of the worst offenses ever. The situation and overall approach at QB1 is just giving me flashbacks of a certain mentality which longtime Panthers fans know all too well from the Richardson years personified. "Just happy to be here". If we're this concerned about BY getting hurt in preseason then we should have made a better effort to bring in legitimate depth to the QB room and actually pushed Bryce Young instead of once again laying out the red carpet. The Texans solidified QB2 is 25 years old. We've been going around with Andy Dalton at QB2 like he's so invaluable and necessary for Bryce's development. No that's what your head coach and offensive staff are for. Legit competition behind center is a good thing. Particularly when your QB play for 16 games last season was historically bad in key metrics. If you have a true competitor behind center he should want that competition and feed off it. Instead it's what can only be perceived as complacency. Everything has become about comfortability instead of actually placing expectations upon the first pick. Specifically a guy whose key selling point beyond his QB intelligence was his ability to improvise and create something out of nothing. Now just for him to even play in preseason every little thing around him has to be just right and even then it's a "well maybe we'll see". It'd be nice to not continue to be the laughingstock to other fanbases and only mentioned in passing under the guise of "well at least we're not the Panthers" consistently.- 225 replies

As far as Canales goes I'm not judging him on this he inherited Bryce. We always knew that was a hard selling point to any head coaching candidate we were looking at. And at the end of the day he needs to be given the chance to at least attempt to develop a QB of his choosing. The biggest thing I'll be interested in seeing from Canales is how he has the team prepared on gamedays and how he coaches situationally on gamedays. If that area is looking sketchy then nothing else really matters anyways. But I hope to see some positive results based on his overall approach. -
Ian Rapoport on Bryce: "Everyone had Bryce Young #1"

Nobody can say what would or would not have happened under different scenarios especially involving other teams. Don't need to go down this rabbit hole anymore to justify the pick. I can say for myself Stroud's arm talent was vividly evident on his game film. It was not the same for Young. Seeing their respective rookie seasons only confirms the obvious. That's just all there is to it. We made our bed. Time to accept and move forward. -

If they're sitting him because of the OL then the Dan Morgan hire is already DOA. -
I just don't get the rationale of handling your first overall pick the face of your franchise and a guy with a guaranteed 38 million dollar contract like a delicate newborn. Next 2 games after NE are the Jets and the Bills. And if you do end up playing him in either of those games you can pretty much guarantee their defensive staffs are going to bring the house on BY. All you are doing by handling him this way is telling defenses to continue teeing off on him.

Some Panthers fans who watched our football team barely squeak their way out of going 0-17 last year say that preseason isn't all that necessary or important. I think I'll listen to DeMeco on this.
-
If we were one of the up and coming or recently successfully competitive teams I would be more inclined to be on board with you on this. But we are the worst of the worst until proven otherwise. The Rams are on the completely opposite end of the spectrum in comparison. I want this franchise to return to some form any form really of respectability. For the time being sitting your first overall pick out for all of preseason is rightfully going to result in a lot of eye rolls from a fanbase that just witnessed the worst season in franchise history and offensively one of the worst seasons ever probably.

It would be a pleasant surprise that I would welcome given our QB room. But knowing my Panthers and the sketchy state of our OL I'm going to expect a sh*t sandwich.
