Old fired coach challenges old fired coach
frankw replied to UnluckyforSome's topic in Carolina Panthers
We never had back to back winning seasons in days of yesteryear but damn Panthers football was at least really fun to watch from time to time. -
Thou doth protest too much. You're acting like people are making what you perceive to be negative statements after Bryce was rookie of the year or something. In actuality circumstances aside last season he statistically had one of the worst rookie campaigns of the last 20 years. Then he opened the season with two of the worst QB performances in franchise history and we've had some shitty QB's over the years so that's saying something. After a brief stint of looking at least like a marginal starter for a handful of games despite our scoring output remaning bottom of the league he had a really bad game at home against the Cowboys who have been in disarray themselves this season. The fanbase is a reflection of the franchise. We haven't sniffed the playoffs since 2017 we haven't won the division since 2015 we have the worst win percentage in professional sports. We can't draft worth a damn. What you see is what you get for the time being. Maybe it's you. Maybe you are the one that needs a break from it all if that's how you feel. But just remember you've dished out plenty here too so don't hurt yourself falling off that high horse bud.

Who is rooting for him to fail or struggle? Or do you perceive the sight of folks logically discussing the good and bad of his performances across 25 current starts to be rooting for struggle or failure? If you do that's a you problem. Not to mention you *ahem* personally have flip flopped positions on Bryce and others on at least a few occasions. You're the last one that should be on a soap box here.

Arm talent.
-
Any first or second year QB is going to force some passes. I said all along when we drafted Young I'd be fine with him getting picks by pushing the ball downfield if it meant we were still keep defenses honest. It happens to all young QB's and even some of the very good ones are prone to it from time to time. It's all about the bounce back mentality though. And it's still better than putting the ball on the ground.

It's been a pedestrian year for passing on the whole even for some of the best QB's. The only QB closing in on 4k passing yards with 3 games left is Burrow. That's why it's important to maintain perspective on what may or may not qualify as progress or improvement for QB's outside the top 15-20 range.

Respectfully I cannot agree with the assumptions being made here. One QB has always had the required phsyical traits and arm talent that popped off the tape. That will always translate to some degree no matter the situation. He would not have been an MVP candidate here but what he can do with his arm changes the way any defense approaches their gameplan. The other..well.. I'd say the best compliment we can give Bryce Young from a phsyical standpoint nearing the conclusion of his second season is he can surprisingly absorb a lot of hits given his size. You can't even run a sneak with Bryce Young. Seriously.

Old fired coach challenges old fired coach

Not a fan of Gruden but he's absolutely right here. -
Yeah the "but Stroud sucks" deflection is honestly really embarrassing for our community. Anyone with eyes can see he still possesses the necessary traits of a franchise QB to keep them competing for the playoffs at minimum.
-
Legette is still an unknown. But the Brooks pick is and was at the time a huge risk. At least our first round pick has seen the field over the majority of the season. Regardless we need to clean house of the draft scouts. We have been drafting the same mold of WR going back to TMJ and enough is enough.

Something we can agree on
-
The issue is that performance is the bare minimum of what's expected from any starter. We talked up that Chiefs game to no end then Aidan O'Connell went out and put up an even more impressive game and outperformed Mahomes. Then he went out and had one of the ugliest games of the season against the Bucs. O'Connell is a backup at best. We don't have to like it but our first overall pick is in a similar boat.
-
The issue is any progress Bryce Young has made over the course of his short career thus far has been one step forward two steps back. At the end of the season we will have 28 starts between this season and last from which to evaluate him. And the above is to me the best you can say on his behalf when logically assessing that game tape.
-
Well I'm glad we can see eye to eye on that but it appears there are still other people not convinced. I see the Bryce situation as this. First season the team around him was bad. He was also quite bad too. Second season we went the extra mile and then some via steep investment in free agency and the draft to attempt to solve this dilemma and to the detriment of the defensive roster in the meantime. Now fast forward to 14 games into the season and we've spent a significant amount of discussion on both the defense that we put on the back burner for Bryce Young and the additions we brought in. Some of that is logical. But we have to circle back to where this all began. Bryce was billed as a franchise changing QB who would not need elite talent across the board. That cannot be stressed enough. So to me these discussions about his supporting cast or lack thereof eventually lead to me asking when does he begin elevating those around him instead of the other way around? That's what a first overall pick is supposed to do.

Right Pittsburgh isn't the only singular team this can be applied to. But there have been other teams that have traded a talented wide receiver the last several years that didn't go on to become a complete dud and embarrassment for their new team. Unfortunately for our Panthers it's looking like we simply do not have a knack for identifying talent at the position either via draft or trade. Sobering truth.
-
Idk about that correlation I see your point in theory but on one side is a prospect who has never had a chance in the NFL yet on the other side is someone who has already made a rep for himself with his team and not in a good way. Anywho as far as salary cap and this franchise goes it's just more for the fire right?

Panthers Commit To Bryce Young Being Starter For Rest Of Season
frankw replied to TheSpecialJuan's topic in Carolina Panthers
Well yeah there are only 3 games left and Andy Dalton obviously has no future here whatsoever. The fact our first overall pick can have awful games like last Sunday and the best response we have is "well we don't have anyone else that isn't terrible" is a sad state of affairs but that's your Carolina Panthers. -
Wanting competition for a 2nd year QB that is 31st in passing yards should not be a controversial stance. It's common sense.

You should be getting paid by his PR team for your work here. Truly dedicated.

The Steelers have casually moved on from a number of talented receivers over the years while other teams couldn't wait to bring them in and profit off their supposed "mistake". Well clearly they don't make mistakes in that area. Diontae Johnson should be the one that finally sends that clear message to the rest of the league. All I'm saying is. If you need a WR and one is available or coming available from Pittsburgh use your brain and keep looking elsewhere. Just a big waste of everyone's time.
-
Sure if you give them a pass for being foolish enough to think the Steelers were letting a really good WR go for peanuts in the first place. He's what he's always been he hasn't changed at all since leaving Pittsburgh. Hopefully a lesson learned for our front office.

Panthers Made the top 5 on an ESPN List...
frankw replied to Ricky Spanish's topic in Carolina Panthers
Alright let's keep it real here. None of us can say that one way or another. All we have to go by is what Stroud and Young bring to the table from a physical standpoint and from a matchup standpoint. If we were to insert Stroud into this offense all along defenses instantly have to change their whole gameplan. He can make throws at all levels and in tight windows. He has a bigger frame so they can blitz all they want but he won't be taken down by a light gust of wind or getting a single finger laid on him. Would he have taken his lumps? Absolutely this is the Panthers. But he would be a completely different matchup behind center. That can't be understated. -
I hear you brother. But I am now past the point of wanting to see that this season. We're dead in the water. We're not winning anything for the culture going forward from here on out in the remaining games. We have so many needs. I'm not saying tank or any nonsense like that. I'm just saying it doesn't matter one iota anymore what he looks like when there's nothing left to play for anyways. Let the young guys get their reps these last few weeks and head into the offseason with a lengthy list of issues to address. Beginning with the QB room.
