The term "elite" seems to be the key in any questions linked to his arm. I don't see anyone saying he didn't possess an NFL arm. Let's be honest the elite addition to arm strength is subjective at best in today's NFL. You don't absolutely have to be able to throw a frozen rope 60+ yards through the air to succeed. But you do have to be able to demonstrate some level of consistent success particularly as a deep passer. Burrow passed the eye test that's all there is to it. Anyone that tries to tell you Bryce Young passed the eye test in the arm strength dept is engaging in self deception.

Mingo stat. Lost yards on uncatchable balls
frankw replied to raleigh-panther's topic in Carolina Panthers
Arguing about the OL he had at Alabama is pointless. It was still Alabama. In the end the biggest takeaway you need to consider from his time at Alabama is he had a significantly worse deep ball than Mac Jones Tua and Jalen Hurts. No improvements on the OL are going to change that at either level. -
Sounds like a common sense take for anyone that watched him play. You can't understate how minimally defenses feared him beating them with his arm.
-
So you watched Burrow win the national championship and thought to yourself "this guy has a terrible arm"?
-
Eh we've already lost a lot of fans. I rarely see people in Panthers gear as it is. The funny thing is we didn't truly hit bottom until last season. We at least had some flashes with the likes of Kyle Allen and Sam Darnold. Tepper did this with his constant desperation and needing to be the smartest guy in the room.

It's amusing how the bar has been lowered so much for a #1 pick here in Carolina that simply expecting him to attempt to do anything at all to improve phsyically like his former general manager said he expected him to is akin to expecting "50 pounds of muscle" lmao. Guys it's fine to expect the face of the franchise who is sitting on a 38 million dollar contract to put in some level of extra effort.

Quinn and The Golden Calf of Bristol had the necessary frame to add to. They didn't bust solely because of their physical traits. We can be defensive with one another but what we see with Bryce is what we get. We didn't make the decision.
-
True. But you still have to start somewhere if being a pro athlete is your choice of career path.
-
Say what you want about Kyler and his commitment to his craft ie playing Call of Duty or whatever. But he clearly isn't afraid of putting in time and effort in the weight room as a #1 overall draft pick. That's kind of a necessity if you want to be the guy for a franchise. Well unless you're the Carolina Panthers apparently.

Wilson was elusive with his legs and had lower body strength. He could have been a pro in the MLB if he wanted. While not having an outstanding arm he certainly had an uncanny ability to throw on the run with precision. He had the necessary arm strength to throw up those passes that landed perfectly in the hands of his receivers like he always had a horseshoe up his ass. That ability is because he played baseball. I really don't like that you guys are making me say nice things about that jabroni. But Bryce Young is none of the above. He is average or below average in pretty much everything relating to physical traits and arm strength is heavily debated at best at this point. The comps to Wilson never held up. And people who went even further with Brees were smoking some high grade poo.

Panthers ranked as NFL's 2nd-worst roster
frankw replied to TheSpecialJuan's topic in Carolina Panthers
I can't blame anyone in sports media for not believing we've made a big enough jump talent wise to compete. I mean let's be realistic. In the eyes of many of us here we were improved on paper under Scott Fitterer each offseason the last few years. Just because we're once again buying in doesn't mean the rest of the sports world will also. Then you go back to preseason last year and the downplaying of how horrific we looked not just offensively but as a whole. If we look competent in preseason I will begin to feel some level of confidence about the direction of the team and so will those in the sports world. Until then nothing we've done matters. -

There's our guy @AceBoogie at it again slinking around pooing posts he doesn't like about Bryce Young after creating a thread declaring him a bust and then running from it. I love the huddle. -
Right but if it goes down that path then letting Bryce Young flame out and waste the season is only going to continue this downward skid of the culture within our locker room and create resentment amongst some of the roster. At this point all I'm left with is that Canales somehow works a miracle with Bryce. But then the catch22 of that is the FO doubles down because they are deeply invested in Bryce Young and try to build around him and we hover around just mediocre enough to compete for the playoffs but never doing much else. All of this is a harsh lesson on why you don't trade up to 1 for QB's and if you do every single time you select the one who is the best passer point blank period. Let's get to camp and get this shitshow rolling!
-
You very well could be right. Canales signed a 6 year contract. The question is if the early Bryce Young returns for 2024 start to look like 2023 how much freedom does Canales have to make changes with his team and how soon? This is why some people myself included have maintained that our QB1 needs legitimate competition on the roster. Not Andy Dalton. And not some JAG UDFA.

This is why I said before the draft this is not a good destination for a rookie wideout. Yes we think we have a better coach on paper this year (deja vu?). But if Bryce starts to struggle early like he did last season because defenses now have 16 games worth of tape of his habits and cons how long before the coach has to make a change for the good of the team? And will Tepper even allow that change? Stay tuned. -
I think some of you are reading way too much into this emphasis on the run. Running the ball is good. Running the ball is old school football. But it's a passing league. And the other layer to wanting to run the ball at all costs is your run game is only as good as your passing game. Just a heads up for folks. Defenses will be ready to stop our run game from the jump until Bryce Young proves he can open up the entire field with his arm.

This shouldn't be news to anyone that isn't trying to carry water for Bryce Young.- 94 replies

I don't remember hearing much if any at all doubts about Joe's arm talent. Caleb Williams as much poo as people talk about him no one is worried about his arm. And neither were sub 6 foot QB's to boot. When you're an outlier amongst outliers physically and you refuse to participate at the combine you better walk on water as Bill Parcells said.
-
I'll look but so far I don't know where or when that would have taken place. When he was at Alabama? And if that's the case we already know how they embellish things in relation to height and weight so it would have to be taken with a heavy grain of salt if such were the case. At the end of the day knowing what we know now after their rookie seasons the tape that we all argued over behind each QB prospect didn't lie. The proof is in the pudding as they say right?
-
All anyone could do pre-draft was speculate based on his college tape. Here's a fun reddit thread that has aged impeccably. https://www.reddit.com/r/Texans/comments/zk9hlf/despite_his_size_bryce_young_has_excellent_a_but/

$450? I had to look this up to see for myself. That is pure hilarity. I have had very little to no interest in other NFL games the last several years and nonsense like this certainly won't help with that. I'll just stick with the local Panthers games and catch highlights for others if I have any interest. -
When you say early do you mean first round in general or top 5? If you're going top 5 top 3 or 1st overall then yeah you're going to find a ton of busts. That's why I didn't want to trade up for a QB and if I did Stroud was the only choice. And that brings us back to the issue at hand. If you're trading up you trade up for the jackpot. The best arm talent in the draft. We chose the low end arm talent to trade up for. Just awful management. But that's a Tepper team for ya.
-
People have been saying stuff like this for years. Here's one in relation to the 2018 draft when this topic was once again a source of debate. That list is.....rough.
-
It wasn't even just not wanting to have his numbers under the microscope compared to the big arm QB's it was just not wanting that data available overall. Both he and his agents/inner circle knew they couldn't let that happen because it would have torched his draft stock. At the end of the day to me that's not the mark of someone who wants to be a champion or a leader. That's just someone who wants to get drafted high at all costs and then worry about the rest later. That's who we decided to mortgage the future for and make the face of our franchise. It was an enormous gamble that for some reason many people lauded as a slam dunk at the time. Sports will humble you quick. If there's anything we as Panthers fans can say for certain that's it.
