Observer article by Ellis Williams. How the Panthers got here
frankw replied to raleigh-panther's topic in Carolina Panthers
Turns out maybe it wasn't such a hot idea to give full control to a college coach with only one season of low level NFL coaching experience.- 81 replies

We are seeing the end of Cam's career
frankw replied to Hayden Panettiere's topic in Carolina Panthers
Darnold will get another look at some point but their circumstances are quite different. We have three and a half seasons of game tape of Darnold looking like the qb he has since college. Is there a slim chance he could turn it around and become a franchise qb? I suppose. But the odds are about the same that one of us will hit the Powerball this week. But even if we can overlook his deficiencies as a signal caller I have serious doubts about his ability to inspire confidence in his teammates as the defacto leader of that group. Everyone has some bad games here and there you can't win them all but his final start is about as dejected a Panthers offensive group as I've ever seen. He isn't a bad teammate but he seems averse to natural leadership and the little interaction we saw with Robby A after throwing an ugly picksix is indicative of that. -

Why does any of it matter? Do you have a DeLorean time machine in your backyard that we can use to correct our mistake? If he turns into a franchise qb for WFT good for them. Has nothing to do with us beyond showing how inept our management is. -

I agree about the oline but if we can adequately correct C and LT and get a real NFL caliber offensive coordinator that will go a loooong ways in reestablishing our offense. This stuff about Cam is so boring. There might be 2 or 3 fans who think he is truly above reproach. Everyone else sees the signing for what it is and people sitting around crowing that Darnold got unfair treatment while Cam isn't getting criticized just sound like goofballs. Most commentary here and other places pretty clearly lay out if he has another bad game or two like that it's pretty much spelling the end of the road. We knew this was a live in the moment longshot when we brought him back in under these poor circumstances. -

Heinicke actually didn't look bad here we simply chose the wrong qb like we always have. Will Grier never should have been drafted but stuck around bc of that for too long. But even with Heinicke rn what we are seeing is a small sample size. Are you arguing he is going to be a great qb? If so look into your crystal ball and tell us when we will have our own next franchise qb. -

I would rather watch 16 games of PJ Walker than see Sam Darnold start another down. Barf. -
Great shooting first half for a road game against the champs. I'll take it. Now if they can close.

We need an experienced OC. No more first timers. OL and ST are pretty much beyond doubt in need of replacement. But I'm just not at all thrilled about the idea of another head coach who has to have his hand forced to upgrade his staff. The writing is on the wall with that.

Talent that can't stay on the field. Staring down the barrel of three 5 win seasons in a row. What nuances are we missing in your opinion? You might see less pessimism if we had not mortgaged future draft capital to field this mess.
-
Oh of course our oline is a disaster and Joe Brady needs to be replaced. But I just don't think McCaffrey is built for the role of a featured back and definitely not a weapon you can base your entire offense around. You gotta see the writing on the wall. Since that often touted 2019 season where he led the league in touches he's been practically made of glass ever since. It sucks but this is the reality we are living in now.
-
Absolutely. We need a real NFL caliber offensive coordinator. Teddy was right about what he said. We have to recognize this and move forward accordingly. Lessons must be learned. To bring in a college head coach who had one year as a low level assistant and add a staff with no real experience in this league was a very poor move.

The Panthers were bidding against themselves by the time of the trade the 49ers sniffed around but balked at the asking price there was no other interest. Not only did we whiff on the trade cost we immediately picked up the 18 million dollar option for a player with three seasons of NFL game tape as a failure. It is a colossal miss at best and yes other teams get things wrong with the qb position but few teams faceplant as badly as Carolina has in back to back years with the position. To go back to Cam Newton hat in hand shows how badly Rhule and Fitterer blew it.

True but we've also been run over by the likes of the Giants WFT and the Dolphins so we're back to square even with all that investment.
-
Yup after the 2016 blunder that all but completely guaranteed the end of the run with our 2015 core what do we do in 2020? An all defense draft!

Looking ahead to this offseason *Warning* Not for the Weak Stomach
frankw replied to ncfan's topic in Carolina Panthers
As the Saints have shown the cap is plenty manageable but the problem for the Panthers is they are cuffed to three very iffy salaries in CMC Darnold and Anderson. I think with the right offensive design and calls Robby will be useful again but all options need to be on the table for getting the first two off our backs. We need to build this oline and that will take wheeling and dealing if we are expecting prayers from the draft it will be years before our oline is where it needs to be. Fix C and fix LT and we can work around the rest for the time being. But we also need a real young qb in here not some other teams failure or a cast-off from the XFL but our own guy. -
On the mind numbingly predictable playcalling I completely agree but as far as utilizing talent if you can't run your 8th overall pick rb up the gut without him breaking you probably shouldn't have drafted him.

Another one. One post in particular takes the cake. It was deleted but remains in quotes.

Hurney contract yes but he did what he was told. Our new owner had hired a new coach jettisoned Cam Newton and needed a face to sell tickets that's what it was about. Hope it was worth it.
