Absolutely. We need a real NFL caliber offensive coordinator. Teddy was right about what he said. We have to recognize this and move forward accordingly. Lessons must be learned. To bring in a college head coach who had one year as a low level assistant and add a staff with no real experience in this league was a very poor move.

The Panthers were bidding against themselves by the time of the trade the 49ers sniffed around but balked at the asking price there was no other interest. Not only did we whiff on the trade cost we immediately picked up the 18 million dollar option for a player with three seasons of NFL game tape as a failure. It is a colossal miss at best and yes other teams get things wrong with the qb position but few teams faceplant as badly as Carolina has in back to back years with the position. To go back to Cam Newton hat in hand shows how badly Rhule and Fitterer blew it.

True but we've also been run over by the likes of the Giants WFT and the Dolphins so we're back to square even with all that investment.

Yup after the 2016 blunder that all but completely guaranteed the end of the run with our 2015 core what do we do in 2020? An all defense draft!

Looking ahead to this offseason *Warning* Not for the Weak Stomach

As the Saints have shown the cap is plenty manageable but the problem for the Panthers is they are cuffed to three very iffy salaries in CMC Darnold and Anderson. I think with the right offensive design and calls Robby will be useful again but all options need to be on the table for getting the first two off our backs. We need to build this oline and that will take wheeling and dealing if we are expecting prayers from the draft it will be years before our oline is where it needs to be. Fix C and fix LT and we can work around the rest for the time being. But we also need a real young qb in here not some other teams failure or a cast-off from the XFL but our own guy. -
On the mind numbingly predictable playcalling I completely agree but as far as utilizing talent if you can't run your 8th overall pick rb up the gut without him breaking you probably shouldn't have drafted him.

Another one. One post in particular takes the cake. It was deleted but remains in quotes.

Hurney contract yes but he did what he was told. Our new owner had hired a new coach jettisoned Cam Newton and needed a face to sell tickets that's what it was about. Hope it was worth it.

Great thread.

The lone winning season with CMC he wasn't even the teams leading rusher. But pile in wearing those mint #22 jerseys fellas.
-
For context Davis was 29 when he got here that's when most rbs begin to break down unlike McCaffrey who is only 25. But knock the man if you want he had a key role in one of only two Super Bowl runs for this franchise
-
I'll never knock McCaffrey's talent it is clear as day but the better long term backs of our franchise were bruisers built like Fournette see Jonathan Stewart and Stephen Davis. We took a gamble on McCaffrey's versatility as more of a Swiss army knife when we should have just focused on what we knew had already worked and gotten us to two Super Bowls. You live and learn but unfortunately we tend to always learn the hard way.
-
Fournette was the logical choice as a punishing runner paired with Cam at the time. I don't blame Leonard for failing with the Jaguars who wouldn't? The one thing you can count on with this franchise is more often than not they will make the wrong choice. Cam Newton over a defensive tackle being one of the lone exceptions over the years and if some folks here had their way it wouldn't have happened.

These threads are fantastic.

There is much truth in this but even still our defense has been getting absolutely abused in the trenches regardless of the offensive woes and that simply can't happen after back to back defensive first round picks and an entire draft in 20'. That isn't even mentioning our bizarre cornerback stockpiling.

Dane Brugler Mock Draft 1.0 (from The Athletic)
frankw replied to Mr. Scot's topic in Carolina Panthers
Not necessarily advocating for us to go quarterback in the first but who have we "reached" for? The last QB we drafted was Will Grier (lol) in the third round. I can't even call signing Teddy Bridgwater and trading for Sam Darnold attempts. No other teams were willing to A. pay Teddy that much money and B. give up that much for Sam Darnold. We have yet to make a real attempt. -

We're already there pal. The Jets have a better qb room than us and also three of our draft picks while we guaranteed the guy they sent packing a cool 18 million bucks. -

I can understand people not sure about drafting QB but everything should be on the table. If we're able to move a bad contract or two we need to be going after some proven olinemen via free agency or trade. All our resources next year should be going to the offense in a league driven by scoring and I don't care who we have to move to make that happen even if it means losing a fan favorite. But it all begins with QB. -
Yeah I don't get it either. To me it seems far fetched to think Hurney flew out on Tepper's private jet with 60 million dollars making his own franchise changing decisions only to be gone barely a year later. From what I've seen everything has been about Tepper and Rhule. Once Matt got in here and took a look around you can see how important Marty was. Good or bad Tepper has been in the driver's seat.
-
Exactly. Our front office decisions especially with the oline have hurt us but there's no excuse to be all time levels of bad that's on coaching too. It's all been 🗑

Idk if fired is the right word given the situation though. He had a meltdown in front of thousands of football fans he basically packed his own bags given the nature of the position he plays. I felt sorry for him at the time but he's still employed and he left here with over a million bucks.
-
Meh he had ample opportunity here if he's salty he can take his money and get fuged.
