Thursday front office press conference 11am
frankw replied to Jackie Lee's topic in Carolina Panthers
Fair or not it is perfectly realistic and fine to say since we have no track record yet to speak of with this FO so there is no earned benefit of the doubt. In regards to TMJ specifically. I want to be clear that I am not a defender of his. I was quite critical of him. I did like the pick at the time and thought it made ok sense generally give our need and who was available. With him it seemed to be not any lack of talent but inside his head. He didn’t seem to want it. But IMO he can actually play. And he was under 24 years old through 3 head coaches and 2 GM's in his NFL career that's not an insignificant set of circumstances in his defense. If his potential is to be unlocked it will be with the 49ers or it won't happen. I can't say because I don't know. I just do not want to see another situation like CMC where a guy is tearing it up on a winning team making playoff runs. And especially if our offense is not living up to expectations. My perfect scenario is he stinks it up in SF and we finally have a real offense again. Win/win. But like I said to another poster. I'm a lifelong Panthers fan. I know how these things tend to lean. It's going to be one extreme or the other. We'll see. -

Main factor is age. 24 years old. Meanwhile we have 5 WR's two of which are 29 and 34. It's an offensive league. Having had the worst passing offense in the league last year IMO the pass catchers are thin barring unforseen circumstances. There's things to like about Morgan and I liked the bringing on of Tillis. Certainly there is more to slot as positive than there is to question. But in this league sometimes small things become big things you just never know. Either way regardless of results this year next season we need to continue reloading our offense. -

This could be a great decision or a very bad one. One thing about my Panthers that I know for sure is we have a knack for these kinds of scenarios. Make no mistake. Dan Morgan is heavily invested in Terrace Marshall JR being a big fat failure in SF. -

Well this would certainly reflect the "retooling not a rebuild" philosophy. This regime needs to stack some wins this season. Excuses will be in short supply fair or not. -
No sir. Just commenting on and trying to bring some humor to a strange POV that I've seen lately here about fans remarking on sports matters in general as if they have no place doing so. To which naturally the only conclusion to make is why would a place like this even need to exist then? If that's not what you intended then apologies and no harm no foul. On the bolded I think you've accurately described the majority of sports media. Which includes many former players across different sports doing the same thing. Of course fans and content creators on social media mimic these behaviors. At this point it is what it is.

I hear your argument and give validation to that because on the surface it is sound. But my retort would be our #1 WR we acquired via trade and the first round WR we traded up for this year have already been banged up in camp. It's a 17 game season. Things can change in an instant unfortunately.

One could reasonably argue significantly more attention and keystrokes were given to this discussion in relation to Cam Newton a few years ago than right now. And he was on the wrong side of 30 for a QB with the most rushing TD's in league history. Asking for it to go away is akin to screaming at the sun to go because it's too bright on your eyes when all you need is a pair of polarized sunglasses and to not look directly at it.

Wow. I cannot say enough how much we need him to suck there. But as much as I ridicule Kyle Shanahan if anyone is going to get something out of TMJ it's him.
-
Honestly I would have taken Noah Brown over either of David Moore or Adam Thielen.

Right? Fans having opinions? What's that all about? Who do they think they are? It's almost like anyone can have an opinion and be wrong sometimes because we all have flaws and make mistakes.

I'm not going to say we needed a "packed" WR's room. But. We did have the worst passing offense in the NFL last year......

Someone put Ian's face over a gif of Thanos saying "I am inevitable".

Even if he clears waivers it's going to be a long season. He was a sought after UDFA and I imagine his name will come up sooner rather than later if a contending team has a banged up wide receiver or two.
-
Can't argue with this. Although when he was drafted was basically the beginning of the end of the era of some of our best core of starters in franchise history. We've been stuck in neutral ever since. Not surprising he's had an uphill battle carving out a distinct legacy amongst his peers through all that.

I like ISM and maybe this is for the best but idk. That man literally scored our only touchdown in our game against the Bears last season. I can't even remember when we scored a special teams touchdown before that. Better keep churning.... I very much like our emphasis on addressing Corner and our addition at OLB but I really want to see another WR. Diontae Johnson and Xavier Legette have already had a couple of scares in camp and Thielen is 34 years old. That leaves Mingo and David Moore who is 29. I'd like to see another younger wide receiver with some upside brought in.

Well yeah two 1k receivers says it was our most productive season since the first half of 2018. We were actually in a lot of games in that 2020 season. Although it must be pointed out the reason Bridgewater was such a topic of tense debate was his penchant for checking down and in late game scenarios when we needed chunk plays to put away teams it never transpired and it's why he washed out of the league. But ever since Cam and his arm that fateful season we've been desperate to see more of a real spark in the deep passing game. I mean even Kyle Allen briefly showed off some of that. Hopefully Canales has the answer.

Alright now this is what Morgan was talking about in his introductory press conference.

You mean sifting through the Jacksonville Jaguars rejects wasn't a foolproof approach to building a contender?
-
The distinct lack of any level of consistent deep ball in our offensive wheelhouse will remain a key point of contention until Bryce or whoever the QB is establishes a connection. You'd think the Carolina Huddle's most outspoken Teddy Bridgewater defender would already be pretty familiar with this concept.

Tua tying for 2nd on that list is interesting
