There was never any honeymoon only a brief period of release of knowing that we could actually at least halfway compete with a QB willing to make all the throws more often than not. Andy Dalton seemed like the smoking hot girl at the bar by proximity due to how bad the other QB was. What we are seeing now is on the coaching staff. Canales and his staff have to show they can consistently compete in this league circumstances aside. Every team deals with injuries every team loses talent and every team has to pick up the pieces somehow some way. We need to see the staff do that now the rest of the way through the season. Nobody wants to hear about this or that anymore. Just give people some semblance of hope more often than not. Today was not that.

Unfortunately we're the new Browns.

There were a number of mitigating circumstances you have to acknowledge. At the same time. This was a matchup that our team should have been circling as a game to show up big in even if we didn't win. To say the least the Bears and the Panthers are connected for all the wrong reasons and this was a game we really needed to look at least competent in as a sign of goodwill to the fanbase. Today was a really bad look for Canales and Co no matter how you might want to rationalize it. No excuses.

The incredibly low bar of Bryce Young (basically worst ever) has clouded us about Dalton. He's who he's always been. Great guy great teammate. But he's at the tail end of his career and was available to us for a reason. -

Haven't been able to watch. How bad is it? -
This is a perfectly rational and reasonable position for a Panthers fan to take. Doesnt mean one doesnβt like Diontae Johnson. Hell I wanna keep him. I like him. But that doesn't mean I'm just going to ignore any red flags in this situation. That's how we've gotten into many messes over the years. It's become business as usual. Let's just try to avoid that where possible. Going forward that's all I ask.
-
You're getting hung up on talent. I'm not comparing their talent level. Obviously Diontae is a significantly better wide receiver and as far as I know a very good teammate. This is an assessment based on salary cap allocation and risk level at this juncture. These things have to be considered for the good of the franchise. And let's remember. A franchise that has a distinct reputation for making dicey to downright awful decisions. That's why I said moreso I want to let Canales be the driving force for what direction we go here. He will know better than anyone.

If you don't see any parallels at all you are choosing not to. Doesn't matter what your personal opinion is. Remove emotion from the equation. The financial and situational comparison is very much valid. Considering a high cost extension with a small sample size for a WR who will be 29 next season. In this case we haven't even seen Diontae play a full season here yet and we're talking upwards of 25 million a season. We must learn from the mistakes of Scott Fitterer and move forward with a necessary level of skepticism.

I'm going back and forth with this. On the one hand the Panthers have had a definitive void at the WR position for years since 89 left the building. Moore was the only one of the last ten years to even begin to approach that level of production. Unfortunately that's over and done with and can't be undone. What we have left is to consider other signings. How about that Robby Anderson extension many of us liked at the time based on one season? I'm in favor of just slowing things down and taking our time. Ultimately I'll go with whatever Canales thinks is the best route. Certainly he knows what he wants out of the position group. If he deems Diontae a part of the core going forward and his contract expectations are reasonable you go from there. If not then you do what you have to and revisit all this in the offseason. It's not going to be resolved right now regardless. This is and has always been a developmental season.

I understand where ya'll are coming from and tend to agree with you in general but we absolutely should still draft a QB. Let that guy come in and learn under the current veteran starter until the time comes to make a change. All of that should be up to Canales. We should proceed forward with newfound clarity after the Bryce Young fiasco and yes that means a top to bottom reevaluation of our approach to the position. But we should also be mindful that this whole thing came about because we stubbornly ignored virtually all previous common sense norms for QB evaluation and selected an outlier among outliers after trading a fortune because we got caught up in media created smoke and mirrors mainly due to the college said QB played for. Tune out unnecessary noise tone down the analytics and just draft good football players. Regardless of position. And we'll be fine.

Trading away Moore for what we did was absurdly stupid. Other than that if you undo the McCaffrey trade you also undo all the progress we've made along the offensive line because we could not afford to sign Hunt and Lewis and keep CMC while he inevitably ended up injured and wasting a huge chunk of our cap anyways. Some of you literally don't even understand what the hell you're advocating for lol. Quality coaching can change a great deal. Let Canales work.

Kirk Cousins has always had a knack for what can perceivably be vaguely other worldly regular season performances. Then he folds like a lawn chair in the playoffs. Impressive game no doubt. All the same fug him and his team. Same goes for the Bucs and Baker. Both these teams are absolutely beatable and there is no reason for our team to continue to be a doormat in this division. This franchise needs to get back to winning so badly. You've got some fans in here talking up Cousins like you'd almost forget he plays for a bitter divisional rival. I know some of ya'll wear other teams jerseys and whatnot but cmon if you wanna simp take it to the Falcons boards.

21 rushing yards. Wilks would have been a decent coach in the 90's or early 2000's. He leaned heavily on a strong running game and stout D in a league that is heavily skewed toward passing. Just not a good fit in the modern NFL. He is also as far as I know currently not coaching. People need to put this one to bed once and for all.

This hand wringing over Sam Darnold is becoming insufferable. The 49ers cut him too. Could he suddenly be a legit consistent franchise QB from here on out? I guess. Do I think it's likely? Not really. Let the season play out.

Just step aside sir. We're gonna get our money's worth. We've come too far and given up too much not to.

Andy Dalton might not be the guy I envisioned leading the team at this point in time a year ago but I'm damn sure thankful to have him given the circumstances. I'll take this competitive football and team vibe over what transpired the first 2 weeks of the season and most of last season with that other guy 10 times out of 10.

BREAKING: Panthers signing former 1st round pick CB

Grew up in the area. Hopefully he can make some plays for us. At least we're trying to keep churning the roster where we can. -
Do we attempt to extend Diontae this season?
frankw replied to Panthercougar68's topic in Carolina Panthers
If Diontae wants to be here then you see what you can work out to try to convince him to stay. Can't keep getting rid of everyone and expect to suddenly back your way into an all pro at the same position. At the same time we need to see how he finishes the season. And our salary cap outlook is not great. If he wants to hold us over a barrel then you have to look at all available options. -

Schefter looks like he's wearing eyeshadow like he's about to attend a KISS concert. I'll take this information with a grain of salt.
