Justin Fields: Closer Look/Why I think he could be the guy

I've seen a couple of QB experts tear his technique to shreds - he's a guy that really worries me.- 58 replies

Report: 49ers called Panthers about Teddy Bridgewater
OldhamA replied to WarPanthers89's topic in Carolina Panthers
You can't cut him without a viable replacement. Even if we take a first round QB odds are we're going to start Bridgewater next year. We'd have to sign an established vet to move on from him. -
I'm still a little salty Chinn didn't get DROY!
OldhamA replied to top dawg's topic in Carolina Panthers
Then damn, the Panthers sure were relying on a 205lb rookie - what with them aligning him to make all the tackles. -
Hopefully he's not as fragile as Romo.

Dan Snyder...what should they do with him
OldhamA replied to ladypanther's topic in Carolina Panthers
Sorry, what's he actually meant to have done? -
The Alabama game is where I changed my tune about Pitts - he was Mossing 1st / 2nd round CBs. He's never going to be an elite all-round TE, but he's a weapon in the passing game. Njoku's development as a blocker whilst at Cleveland has been remarkable - I don't see why Pitts can't do the same. When you're that good as a pass catcher it's just about doing enough ala Olsen, rather than bodying your guy. I'd need to fully invest time into scouting him to be on board with taking him at #8 (for example), but if you think he's a mismatch player then you don't hesitate. We already have one in McCaffrey. Pair him with Pitts and the opposition LB / S are going to have nightmares before every Panthers game - or they're assigning a CB to him and your WRs get to play against lesser players. THAT to me is what the Draft is about - not rolling the dice on the 4th best QB on the board.

Honestly, 'positional value' is how absolute superstars slip to the dominant teams as the poor teams chase that QB / LT / CB. My approach to the Draft has always been to take the best guy available - FA is where you fill holes. There's nothing more painful than watching your middling LT / QB run out for you while that stud LB / TE / RB (etc) who was taken with the next pick tears up the league.

NBC's Peter King wont be suprised if Mac Jones goes ahead of Lance
OldhamA replied to ncfan's topic in Carolina Panthers
And he looked significantly worse in the one game he played last year. I shudder to think what he's fuged up mechanically working out on his own all year. -
Where do we stand on the compensatory pick front? Only Samuel would net us one I'd imagine?

Anybody remember when Colin Jones "asked" for his release?
OldhamA replied to JABANOG's topic in Carolina Panthers
There's a lot of value in being a great STs guy - albeit less than there used to be as the NFL continues to try to neuter that aspect of the game. -
Good luck to the Saints if they manage to find the Draft capital / Cap Space to pull this off. Personally I'm very much of the opinion that I don't care what our divisional rivals do until we get our own house in order. We massively over performed last year considering the talent on the roster. That's an exciting place to be as it means our coaching staff is top notch. However, we HAVE to capitalise on this by follow up last year's excellent Draft with another very good one this year. We're at least another year away from credibly competing for the Division title (I don't care about being in contention for the now bloated Playoffs - that's not how you consistently win) and possibly turning this sinking ship around.

Olsen joining Davis in return and retirement
OldhamA replied to Mr. Scot's topic in Carolina Panthers
The problem is we didn't surround them with enough talent. There's a reason we've never had back-to-back winning seasons despite being able to roll out a lineup like that for 5+ years. They can't do it all on their own. -

The problem you have with all these QBs is that they're potentially great IF. Jones and Lawrence are the only ones who are really NFL ready and you know what you're getting right now. Fields is raw - that Ohio St system didn't do him any favours. Wilson needs to rework his footwork. Lance needs a boat load of work across the board. So if you're an NFL GM you've got to really trust your QB Coach to take a few of these guys. There's no guarantee you can change someone's footwork / ability to process information at this stage of their career. Josh Allen is the poster boy, but I think he's an outlier. -
All three had career years with Bridgewater, yes. People want to take him out of that equation for some reason. I guess it doesn't fit their narrative.

Can't really argue with that track record. -
Bloody hell, when did we sign the second best trio at WR? Well done, Marty Hurney I say. Masterful job of acquiring talent.

It is a huge ding on all the kids that opted out. I include Greg Rousseau in that group too - he was a moron to sit out the season. -
Huh, odd move. Unless he plays an entirely different season to his wife that's a weird choice.

Who's our starting QB if we trade Bridgewater? -
I mean Joe Burrow was taken #1 overall as a 24 year old rookie. Jones will go somewhere in the first round, but nobody has compared him to Burrow as an athlete.
-
I'm ok with this as long as you run him into the ground ala how the Ravens are using Jackson (and how we didn't use Newton). Don't take a running QB and try to make him a passer. Take a running QB and build the offence around designed QB runs.
