New Coach Thread 2: Electric Boogaloo
TLGPanthersFan replied to Ricky Spanish's topic in Carolina Panthers
Already have my spot reserved for the “Fire Wilks”. We will be serving “I Told You So” alcohol. It is as bland and boring as Wilks is. -

Panthers could make the offer and unofficially hire Steichen even if he is in the Super Bowl I think. I remember the commentators talking about Shanahan going to the Niners during the Falcons Super Bowl. -
Why is mediocrity so attractive?

Wilks will never win a Super Bowl. Most he will do is flounder for 1 or 2 seasons and be fired. Interim HC do not succeed when the tag is removed. Coaches like him do not succeed in the modern NFL. -

LOL. You Wilks fans are so pathetic. -

The Wilks fans concentrate on 6-6 and not the fact history says Wilks will not be the exception. He will likely be the rule. Do people not know where to look at the interim to HC success rate. It is really bad. Like college coach to NFL bad. -

Yet the Wilks fans will constantly find excuses as to why the Panthers suck under Wilks and it will never be his fault. -

So what you are saying is Wilks will suck without a QB to carry his ass just like Rivera. We all know Rivera was being carried by Cam and Luke and we are seeing in Washington what kinda coach Rivera really is. Mediocre. Which is you precious Wilks ceiling. -

Doesn’t matter what people say Wilks fanatics will always have excuses. Gonna be interesting how you guys spin it isn’t his fault if he is hired and falls on his face in 2023. -

Rivera tried to do the same thing. Remember in 2019 when we had a 5 percent chance to make the playoffs and Ron was hyping it up with his 5% Chance t-shirt? Protect the Bank is just as cringe. -

Impressive, yeah, but history says not sustainable. Wilks has history against him. -

Can Wilks get over his conservative tendencies and play-not-to-lose mentality and be aggressive? Even if we have a good offense and defense if the coach is punting on 4th and 1 from the opponents 40 it is kinda a moot point. McDermott has been a great coach but we saw some of the same problems Sunday that I am worried Wilks will have. If he can evolve and get over it and prove me wrong then good. But Rivera said during his last year as coach he needed to change and when the season started he went right back to what made him comfortable. Wilks may tell Tepper he will be more aggressive but will that stand when the season begins? -

But he shouldn't get the job because of it. Does no one look at the success of past interim HC. Only one has ANY semblance of success and that was Jeff Fisher back in the 90s. The failure rate of interim HC being made into permanent HC is about as high as college coach failure rate. Wilks is likely not the exception. Hiring Wilks is essentially Tepper doing the same damn thing he did with Rhule. Hoping that Wilks can be the exception. I hope Tepper realizes that. If we hire Wilks it will be because every other coach dropped out. Wilks is not the best chance this team has a sustained success. At best it is sustained mediocrity. -

Congrats he went .500. He is mediocre. We can do better. I don’t understand Wilks love from people like you so the feeling is mutual. But some people love mediocrity and love supporting mediocre coaches. Weird, and kinda dumb, hill to die on. -

I do not know if I can stomach an entire season of Wilks being our head coach. I was hoping when Rivera was fired I would never have to shout my complaints about him ever again. But looks like I may have to dust off the old things I would yell at my TV if Wilks is hired. I still can’t believe we have a Rivera-like coach in the top 3 when we were so glad to see Rivera gone. -

I hope Tepper talked to Wilks about that Tampa game. If he wants to be here longer than a year or two he has to cut the conservative play-not-to-lose crap. There is a reason why Rivera had so little success because coaches like Rivera, Fox and Wilks depend so much on a coin flip. Hoping everything goes according to plan and if not just keep doing the same thing with no adjustments. It is why Fox and Rivera had so many losing seasons even though they had so much elite talent, and why during the few seasons everything clicked the Panthers were really good. TLDR: Wilks and Rivera style of coaching depends too much on luck. I would hope Tepper would tell Wilks that he has to change how he coaches or put him on a very short leash. I do not have much faith in interim HC being given the full time job. History says they just do not work out. -
That’s that.
-
Still think it is more likely we trade up then trade for Carr. I feel the front office is as tired of retreads QBs as the fanbase is.
-
I’d just take a proven NFL coach period. Doesn't have to have HC experience.
-
Problem is all I see is an OC being held back by Wilks and making up for his try-not-to-lost mentality. Wilks is the one to decide to punt the ball on 4th and 1 in the opponent’s territory.
-
If we are gonna give up picks I’d much rather them trade up for a QB. A good HC can make a good team out of 2nd and 3rd round picks. All eyes on NYC right now.
-
I think a team can unofficially hire a HC. Because I remember Shanahan being announced for the 49ers job before the Falcons played in the Super Bowl. Also the commentators kept bringing it up during the game.
-
No. We had an interview scheduled for McDaniels that we cancelled.
-
I don’t agree with that but whatever. Hiring Wilks because he has past coaching experience is not smart. If Tepper wants to win in this league today he hires an OC regardless how these games turned out. Including Kefka. I’d take him over Wilks in a heartbeat. I wasn’t discouraged of Kefka because of how the offense played against one of the best defenses in the NFL. Giants were very limited. I look at the entire season and what he did with a very bad offense. Nah, Kafka should still be in the running and saying he shouldn’t because of yesterday is such a knee jerk reaction.
-
So instead of taking a chance with Kefka we hire a coach from the same tree as McDermott and watch as offensive HC walks all over Wilks. Kafka may not be the answer but neither is Wilks. Defensive HC do not succeed in the modern NFL. This Bills vs Bengals game is proof of that.
