When this team was run like a Mom and Pop franchise, Steve could get away with just about anything. Even undermining the team's Offensive Coordinator. Not so much after our Mom and Pop GM was replaced by a no nonsense professional. I don't believe Steve can be bested by anyone in the league when it comes to giving 100%. Steve's downfall here seemed to come from a lack of tolerance for others that failed to share his personal vision.

This pipe dream stands about as much chance as Muhsin Muhammad and Wesley Walls coming out of retirement and suiting up for the Panthers once again.

I am pretty sure if there were an amicable way to have kept Steve here for his entire career, Gettleman would have done it. It is not like this team was overflowing with talent at the receiver position. The fact that it didn't happen, suggests the complexities of the relationship were too great to overcome. In the Hollywood version, Smith comes back to catch the Super Bowl winning touchdown with a dislocated hip and a patch over one eye. In the real world, Smith retires on a team with one of the worst records in football. Sadly, a scenario he is all too familiar with from his years with Carolina. More's the pity.
