Of course. Just playing the odds. Only one team will sign Derek Carr, but every team has draft picks.
-
I don't believe you have too much to worry about. The Panthers have limited cap space with numerous needs to address. Drafting a QB and bringing in an affordable vet is most likely what they'll end up doing.

This can't come as a shock to anyone who was here two years ago when Rhule attempted to corner the cornerback market. Who knew fans would eventually come to regret it? Meanwhile, Rhule has no regrets. Idiot!

NFL: Bezos barred from bidding on Commanders
NanuqoftheNorth replied to Mr. Scot's topic in Carolina Panthers
Oops, I was wrong. Owners have to write off the purchase price of their teams over the course of 15 years rather than 10. We simply must do more to end the suffering of billionaires! Here: https://nypost.com/2017/10/11/nfl-owners-have-made-millions-off-obscure-tax-break/ And here: https://taxfoundation.org/billionaire-playbook-amortization-sports-deductions/ -
NFL: Bezos barred from bidding on Commanders
NanuqoftheNorth replied to Mr. Scot's topic in Carolina Panthers
Not sure Daniel Snyder will get 7 billion for the Commanders, but then again, not sure he won't either. In his favor, sale prices for NFL teams are increasing well ahead of inflation and they're a great tax break if you happen to be a billionaire. Owners can deducted the entire cost of of the team on federal taxes over the course of ten years. Dan's original investment of 9 hundred million is likely worth more today than the Broncos sold for recently, so any potential buyer is looking at 5 billion minimum. -
Over the years I've read stories of so many retired players barely being able to get themselves out of bed in the mornings and having to take all sorts of medications to endure the pain throughout the day. Pro football is no joke. Not sure if the trade offs are worth it for those who are permanently disabled. When you do not have your health, nothing else matters.

NFL: Bezos barred from bidding on Commanders
NanuqoftheNorth replied to Mr. Scot's topic in Carolina Panthers
The financial improprieties allegation, made by former vice president of sales and customer service Jason Friedman, that got the most media attention was that Washington kept two sets of books to hide income from other NFL owners, teams, and players. This was seen as a silver bullet that could finally kill the beast that’s been holding the franchise down if it could be proven true. Other allegations were made about Washington strategically making it more difficult for customers to get the refundable deposits that should have been returned. The team paid a $250,000 fine in a settlement agreement with Maryland, and two lawsuits were filed by former Washington, D.C. Attorney General Karl Racine. https://www.hogshaven.com/2023/2/22/23610265/at-least-one-subpoena-issued-federal-criminal-investigation-dan-snyder-and-washington-commanders-nfl -

I didn't follow the coaching search as closely as many here, but it left me with the impression that it was conducted by committee, a collaborative effort. So, I honestly don't know how much credit Fitterer deserves for Reich's hire. How heavily did Tepper actually rely on Fitterer in comparison to others in the room? It seems natural that the GM would play a significant role, but at what point did Fitterer's predecessors, Hurney and Rhule, start losing their grip on power? Sunlight is the best disinfectant. No more Hurney, no more Rhule. Everyone in the Panthers office is playing nicely ATM. However, if things continue to go sideways, Fitterer may find himself as the odd man out.

In this day and age NFL players are treated like movie stars. Showered with riches by owners, worshipped by fans and surrounded by sycophants. Is it any wonder some/many of these young men allow their egos to get the better of them? Granted, Russell's long held tendencies and high level of success have seemingly escalated his self-love to a level few players ever attain. His ego is one thing, but if Russ was involved/aware of his charities skimming millions of dollars in donations for enrichment of his close advisors, I doubt he will ever regain fan's support.

"Now fully healthy I'm ready for War." Panthers need multiple TEs that aren't currently on the roster. Certainly wouldn't hurt to have a look.
-
We recall that Tepper has voiced unwavering confidence in several advisors over his 5 years of Panthers ownership. Many, if not most of those people are now gone for failing to meet Dave's expectations. Granted, Tepper's learning curve was rather steep 5 years ago and it took less football knowledge to impress the man back then, than it does today. Notably, in the last year or so Dave's choice of advisors appears to have improved exponentially. Fitterer may not be the GM Panthers fans hoped for, but he may be the GM we need. With a much higher caliber of coaches in the building this season, there will be no place to hide for those who cannot carry their weight.
-
Both of these players are attractive targets though I have no idea how realistic getting them might be. However, it is hard to imagine Tepper bringing in such an esteemed group of coaches without there being a significant turnover in the roster. Interesting times indeed!
-
I'll also add this about Fitterer: Chances are he has only one season to demonstrate his value to Reich and these other veteran coaches. I seriously doubt Frank and company will suffer fools lightly.
-
This. From the outside looking in, it is difficult, if not impossible, to know what role Fitterer played in all the questionable player personnel decisions of Rhule's era. In order not to throw the baby out with the bathwater it appears that Tepper is giving Scott the benefit of the doubt. We may never know the level of responsibility Fitterer played in Darnold's 5th year, Robbie's outrageous contract or the Thomas affair. All costly self-inflicted wounds. Perhaps, all we can hope for, with Reich onboard, is that Fitterer finds his groove and the two of them become a successful duo for years to come.
-
Agreed. Also, even if the Giants had no real interest, they should bring in Carr for a visit as a warning shot across Daniel Jones' bow.

Delusional

The most for the least is the correct answer. The Panthers most productive TEs in the team's history weren't drafted by them. Just sayin'

I would hope that the Panthers are exploring all their options at QB, including Minshew. I also hope they'll consider more than a single stat before drawing any conclusions. https://www.nfl.com/players/gardner-minshew/stats/career https://www.nfl.com/players/derek-carr/stats/career

True. As we've seen, some people are willfully ignorant when the truth undermines their preferred narrative.

A cautionary tale for parents who coddle their children. They'll eventually turn on you.

This story doesn't surprise me in the least. Especially considering how swollen Russell Wilson's head had become during his last few seasons in Seattle. Russell wanted to be included in all the important decisions; schemes, coaching and player personnel. His ego seemingly had no limits. Seattle simply wasn't big enough for both of them. Either Russell Wilson or the Seahawks had to go. I feel comfortable with the city's decision.
-
Why not have both? Remember, Bridgewater and Darnold were both receiving 20 mil/year. So, is 30-35 mil/year for a significant upgrade at QB too much to pay? Keep in mind that the salary cap is increasing by 16 million for 2023. Carr would be the best QB in the division and the Panthers would become the odds on favorite to win the NFC South. None of this would prevent the Panthers from drafting their QB of the future this year or next. Wouldn't it be enjoyable to watch the Panthers get back to playing competitive football in 2023?

The Bucs and Rams went for broke to win Lombardi Trophies. It will be curious to see how long it takes these teams to bounce back from their Super Bowl hangovers.
