Haha, if Darnold is designated the Panthers starting QB this season, something has gone terribly wrong. As a backup? Yeah, I could see our coaching staff trying to help Sam improve his abilities while holding a clipboard during the games on Sunday.
-
Yep. Also, Lamar would have done better if he had hired an agent. A motivated third party/go between to smooth out the details, while not taking negotiations so personally, would have likely closed this deal by now.
-
Haha, yeah that would be nice. Meant draft of course. Thanks for catching that.
-
Haha, you never know, Frank might give you credit for swaying his decision.

Fitterer, Reich Combine pressers today
NanuqoftheNorth replied to Mr. Scot's topic in Carolina Panthers
Maybe it's just me, but I'm getting the distinct impression that the Panthers brass loved everyone they met with today (or so they say). -
This information has be forwarded to Frank Reich.

IF the Panthers intend to resign Sam... That would increase the likelihood that either Carr or Stroud are the team's main targets. If it is Carr, we should know by the end of next week. If the team fails to sign either Carr or Stroud, all bets are off and the chances of a winning record this season diminish significantly. *Predictions are for entertainment purposes only.

I don't watch college ball very often. On the rare occasion that I do, the talent level mismatches tend to distort reality to the point where I don't trust what I'm seeing. Too many of these top ten rookie QBs look like they're totally lost in the pro game. I wouldn't put all my eggs in the rookie basket. Hence, I wouldn't want the next guy up to be Sam Darnold.
-
The coaches would have to have an extremely high level of confidence in the rookie, otherwise they're likely destroying the team's chances at a winning season by putting their eggs in Darnold's basket.
-
If the team was bringing in a rookie and keeping Corral for further development, they'd still need a reliable vet in the mix. Darnold simply isn't that guy unless the Panthers plan on going with a run heavy offense and losing lots of games.
-
Yeah, this is where I'm at. The Panthers couldn't possibly think it would be a good idea to go into this season with a rookie, Corral and Darnold. There has to be a reliable vet in the mix and Darnold isn't it.
-
Of course.

Tepper didn't devote a small fortune to hiring this all-star coaching staff only to watch Sam Darnold become Panthers Plan A.
-
If the Panthers are in talks to bring Darnold back: 1. They may see untapped potential Sam's previous coaches were unable to coax out of him. 2. The bridge/backup QB options may be really bad this year. 3. Panthers are simply doing their due diligence by exploring all options at QB.

Yeah, while this could just be Pete being cagey about the Seahawks intentions, there is more than just a little truth in what he's saying. Kinda sucks, because I was hoping Seattle would be a potential trade partner if the Panthers decided to move up in the draft. Now the Seahawks appear more likely to be in direct competition for the same players.
-
Geno seemed sharper at the beginning of season than at the end. Might be an age factor or not having had to play an entire season for quite some time. Either way, Pete Carroll is smart to explore the Seahawks options at QB. If for no other reason than to remind Geno that he's not the only fish in the sea.
-
Good observation. Also, a few of these vet QBs have a chip on their shoulder and are looking to make a point to their old teams. It could work in the Panthers favor, should they choose to go in that direction.
-
Based on what's happened so far with the Panthers, it is clear that Tepper isn't pulling any punches this year. With that in mind, I tend to agree with you that the Panthers will do just about anything necessary to get their target at QB or go down swinging. I don't know if I'd say "at all costs" but, then again, Tepper has shown that he's willing to make some rather rash moves (Rhule/Watson) for the sake of winning. Here's hoping that Reich will be a moderating force on Tepper's sometimes impulsive behavior.

Try and focus. Defense.
-
Woosh! My comment about horrible defense seems to have gone right over your head. The QBs on your list, ALL benefitted from having better defenses than what Carr has had for his entire career.
-
My interpretation of what the new staff has stated about the QB position is that they're going to place significantly more importance on intelligence than what we've seen in the past. After hearing them, I thought to myself: If what these coaches are saying is true, no way is Sam Darnold getting resigned by the Panthers.
-
We should all be able to recognize that QBs play a different sort of game, taking less risks, when they have a defense that is capable of holding a lead. The record is clear, Carr has had horrible defenses his entire NFL career. Posters who are unwilling to concede this point to Carr aren't willing to have an honest discussion.

Yeah, ain't it great?

I'd prefer not to have to bring in a high priced vet or give up multiple high draft picks on a player that could just as likely turn out to be a bust as an answer at QB. Unfortunately, the team's options are limited. Good news is, Tepper has pulled out all the stops and brought in a highly respected group of coaches. So, I won't be losing too much sleep over what transpires at QB in the coming months. Frank and Friends are here now and paid the big bucks to figure this stuff out for us. For all our sakes, may they choose wisely.
