Is it too early to lock up Horn to a long term deal?
PNW_PantherMan replied to WarPanthers89's topic in Carolina Panthers
I'm personally not making a physical corner a cornerstone of my defense in today's NFL. -
So you believe if Fitterer made that trade he doesn't get fired? I find that really hard to believe. The team would be worse than they were and he still hadn't hit on any draft picks. You think Tepper's keeping him around to see how that turns out? NFL teams are run by humans on short timelines. They frequently do what's in their own best interest before what's better for the team in the long term. This is observable around the league. What GM is selling off players for multiple 1sts to stockpile years of picks? Whether or not its an effective strategy is not relevant. It's not done for a reason. If you fail to see that reason, I don't know what else to say.

I agree with all of that and Fitterer definitely sucked. Some of that may also be blamed on the fact that he did not start with a fresh regime to come in. So he had already burned some of his wick when we were starting over with a new coach (twice). The reality is that we do not often see players traded for that kind of package in the NFL today. We don't see teams selling off star players for large hauls to start a re-build. Whether or not that is the correct decision is up for debate. But in the NFL it's observable that the opposite is mostly the case. Teams tend to over value present assets vs future assets. It all goes back to the fact that "now" is all that matters if you're running an NFL team. They say the NFL stands for "not for long". You don't have the luxury to sow a field that won't be harvested until after you're gone. Nobody's that selfless in NFL front offices.

It tracks pretty well a lot of the time. But its usefulness is limited because the formula is a secret.

This is what people don't understand. Scott Fitterer got fired before he would have made either of those 1sts. Was it the right decision to trade Burns to the Rams for the Panthers? Yes. Was it the right decision for Scott Fitterer? I'd argue no. And I think Dan agreed with him for the same reasons. That's not a trade you can make unless you have assurances that you won't be fired.

That's hilarious. I'm dead.

I'm just saying he'll likely be on the roster and he's going to get a shot at starting. A free agent signing will be Andy Dalton tier, so it will be a push at best most likely. And a late pick shouldn't be starting early on.
-
There's nobody to replace him next season unless we go out of our way to do something stupid like trade for Dak Prescott. The real question is, will he be play up his value enough to where the team trades him? But, I think they'd be more inclined to keep him around if he keeps playing like he did yesterday.
-
He's gonna end up getting a shot next year because Sanders or Ward won't fall to us and the free agency class will be dog poo. I bet we swap Andy Dalton for another backup tier free agent and and roll with Bryce and that guy in 2025.

With all the money invested in the offensive line, we really need to hit on some Round 1-3 picks. We could really use a star receiver or pass rusher on a rookie contract for a few years.
-
That's really the kicker. You can't really view a Moton extension in a vacuum.

Great teams win games like that. This team has got something right now.

Anyone know XL’s drop % rate?

And one of his only good picks was a hall of fame receiver. -
Shorty!!

Is there a timeline of when the statue of Bryce outside the stadium will be completed?
-
Let's hope Dan feels the same way.

I mean if there was an elite pass rusher where we pick, I'm fine with that. But who is the elite pass rusher? This class seems kind of weak overall. If TMac is there i'd take him. I've seen him compared to Tee Higgins. -

The center plays 100% of snaps on offense, but nobody's drafting one of those in the top 5. BPA is the way to go in the top of the draft because the field of prospects is not tailored to your teams needs. You draft based on the field of prospects. There are generally 10-15 prospects that are well beyond anyone else in a given class. You should always take the best player with that selection unless it's incredibly stupid like QB after you already have one. You're out of your mind if you think we are good with receivers right now. XL has shown some things but he is not a sure thing. AT is on his last legs. Coker is just a depth guy at this point. That's all we have. We do not have a good #1 option on this team so you can't say we are good at receiver. -
He's playing in the wrong era. You can’t touch anybody in todays game.

Give it a few weeks. Overall fan sentiment is bipolar.

That was a great goal to tie it up. Nifty shot.
