The team plays around Bryce right now and that works to a degree. Is it championship worthy? Debatable at best. It's gonna be tougher to do that if he's entrenched as a starter with a 2nd contract. Take the human element out of it, and it makes a lot of sense to reset the clock on the QB contract with a fresh face. But we are dealing with the human element almost exclusively with the Panthers.

Nobody’s ring chasing signing an extension. The “bad team tax” just means you have to pay more in UFA than a better team all things being equal. If Derrick Brown hit the market he was getting a monster deal. I don’t think we had to pay a special tax that’s exclusive to a few teams. The bad team tax is not relevant to extending Icky.

Is there any real statistical evidence of this beyond anecdotal things like washed vets signing with the Chiefs or Pats every once in a while? it doesn't really hold up. Everyone gets paid in FA. Everyone gets paid on 2nd contracts. Its just how it is. Do you think Icky would make less in FA than he would with a Panther extension? Is that what's being implied?

If by bad teams you mean 30-31 teams then alright. Discounts are very rare and typically only in special cases. The Panthers aren’t paying a special tax. Every team faces similar roster construction challenges with rising contract values.
