I am not sure what list you are using but I don't believe very many would consider either of those guys top 5 at their position. They certainly have that potential but neither has been able to maintain that level of play for any real length of time.

You are right about Horn and that's just due to his health but when he's healthy he's been amazing and an argument can certainly be made that he is top 5, but Brown is absolutely top 5 and is the 2nd best run stopping DT behind Dexter Lawrence. Both guys go overlooked because of the fact they play here.

Brown and Horn are talent a good DC can use, but they will never be defensive leaders

Both players are arguably top 5 in the NFL at their respective positions and have stated multiple times how they wanna be here and how they want this team to win. That sounds like a leader to me.

This is such a weak class

Teams boards are going to be all over the place

After the first few names come off the board it’s a real crapshoot

But I still want Luther Burden. I also wouldn’t rule out Malaki Starks for us

Every class that doesn't have elite QB's at the top is always considered weak by the national media. This class has really good depth on the defense side of the ball and at RB. If both Mason Graham and Abdul Carter are gone by our pick I'd try to trade down and get extra picks to address our lack of talent on defense and our overall lack of depth.

Sitting here bored at work and watching these early mock drafts on YouTube so I tried my first one.  Did a couple trades that were offered.

Traded down one spot with the Jets (7&38) for (6&55) and still got Graham.

38 Edge  Old Miss Princely Umanmielen

73 Jalen Royals WR Utah St. Tall, fast and a good route runner.

    Thoughts on first try.

We need to come out of this draft with at least 1 good offensive weapon and as much defensive help as possible. I'd actually be ok with us not drafting a center this year with this being a weak center class and I feel that both Brady and Mayes both can be decent centers. We also have the option of resigning Corbett who should be pretty cheap considering his recent injury history but before he went down he was actually playing really well in his first year as a full-time center.

Getting a healthy Derrick Brown back along with Mason Graham, A'shawn Robinson, Jaden Crumedy, and a veteran NT and we could be very nicely set up at Dline next year.

  5. Ickey is gonna be a foundational piece on this team for a long time. He's a good young tackle who's developing nicely and will soon be a top LT in the NFL in a couple years. Pick up the 5th year option and when the time comes pay the man. We have a good Oline now so let's continue to invest in it and maybe we can finally have back to back winning seasons here.

I really don't wanna return to the "can he play LT" discussions here on the huddle 😅

  6. Offer Miles Sandes a reworked 1-year deal for the vet minimum and take a power back in the 4th or 5th round. I like both of the Penn State guys and Ollie Gordon II. I like Phil Mafah too I'm just curious as to what he's going to run at the combine. The dream is to get Cam Skattebo but with his performances in his last 2 games he's probably played himself into a higher pick than I'd feel comfortable spending on a backup RB.

I hate government money being spend on stadiums..

I hate giving billionaire's government money but if it's at least going to things that'll improve the average fan experience and keep the Panthers in charlotte then I can understand the move. Now if we do something like KC where they wanted tax payer money to build a private walkway and improved suites for VIP members and players things that the average fan will never see, use or benefit from then that I'm 100% against.

  8. Evero's scheme is good but he's terrible at scouting and identifying players to play in it. We've went out and brought in several players at his request because of them having history with him and most of them have been awful. I'm ok with keeping him on as DC but his input on personnel needs to be cut back. Go out and get some actual talent on defense and not just the leftovers from the Rams and Broncos from when Evero was there.

  9. Eddy is playing hurt so I give him credit for trying but the team should definitely look to bring in a kicker with a stronger leg this offseason. Eddy's max range is slightly over 50 yards which in the modern NFL just isn't good enough. You need a guy who has the power to make a 60 yard FG for end of half and end of game situations.

    Who here remembers Peerless Price?

He was the #2 WR in Buffalo behind Eric Moulds. He looked incredible in BUF for years in that role, and the Falcons ended up paying him a HUGE (for the time) contract to be their #1 guy. He could not live up to that hype, and was wildly considered a mistake/bust in ATL.

That is all I can think about when I look at Higgins. Someone is going to throw 30M+ at him and I don't think he will live up to those expectations.

You bring up a good point but Higgins played well as the #1 his rookie year before chase got there and I'm sure he's developed since then, so it'll definitely be interesting to see what he can do when he's the main guy somewhere.

If we can get him for somewhere between what Michael Pittman Jr got in 23 million to what DJ Moore got in 28 million dollars a year, then I'd be ok with that. If he comes out asking for 30 million plus, then he can go have fun in New England for that type of money.

Prime Cam did more with less, so don't give me that no weapons crap.

and his career was cut short because of it. By the time he finally got a really good core of weapons around him in 2018 his shoulder was shot, and it was a ticking time bomb before the TJ Watt hit the hit from Watt just sealed his faith.

Cam was the most physically imposing QB that the league has ever seen and instead of trying to build around him and give him the pieces he needed to succeed long term this organization used it as a crutch for their own roster mismanagement and team building incompetence.

The jury is still out on if Bryce can be the QB long term but the primary goal of this organization should still be setting Bryce up for the best chance to succeed.

  12. I do prefer the 4-3 defense and would welcome the switch back to that scheme but it's so much easier to find a 3-4 edge than it is to find a truly dominant 4-3 DE. In the 4-3 defense the pass rush comes from the 4 down lineman on most snaps and unless you have a truly dominant DE or a great DT who can rush the passer then the QB can just pick you apart through the air. The 3-4 allows you to bring pressure on the QB in more ways and it can do well against the run this team just needs to go out and get a true 3-4 NT. With the win last week, we are picking too low to get Abdul Carter so maybe a combo of Mykel Williams in the first followed by Kenneth Grant or Deone Walker in the 2nd to play NT followed by some other bits and pieces elsewhere and we could have a solid unit next season.
