Stewart was pretty washed up that year (3.4 ypc) and basically got no playing time after that season and retired. CMC was good but stuck in Ron's doghouse for most the year and that was the first time Greg got hurt so we didn't really have him for most of the year either (he did play in the WC tho). Cam led the team in rushing too. Our 2017 team's offense was pretty much willed to respectability by Cam. That 2017 team from an overall roster perspective left a lot to be desired, really just felt like a team carried by high end talent on both sides of the ball to me.

Yeah I thought about replying to your original post but decided against it. Since that robbery against UVA earlier in the season the team's been red hot, making threes and tough shots at a much higher clip. Scheyer has really grown throughout the year along with the team and it's a pleasure to see. Lively and Proctor have also come a very long way since the start of the season, at times both looked borderline unplayable early on.

This stat isn't the be all end all of course (interestingly enough he doesn't even appear on the chart for run block win rate which I was not expecting) but I'd be interested to see where you saw 26th. I dunno. From what I watched I don't really feel he was a bad pass blocker, but not really a great one either.

I wouldn't say excel but he doesn't really get beaten by a drum either, at least not from what I saw. That is a good point though that I hadn't considered. But the big thing that Bozeman has over Elfein from my POV is that it seems to me like he calls better protections at the LOS (way less free runners coming through it felt like when he was on the field vs Pat) and that he snaps the ball better. Much less botched/high snaps it seemed to me when he was under center.

I really hope we don't fug around trying to lowball him by a couple million and end up having him get jacked by another team. Missing a C is one of the worst spots to be missing on the OL in terms of on-field impact (not accounting for scarcity/replaceability) and we have a guard coming off a torn ACL; it wouldn't be shocking if Corbett struggled some early in the year just from rust caused by that long rehab period. If we have no C and have Corbett struggling it could lead to a lot of interior pressure which is the worst place to get pressured from (ask Tom) and could easily end up rattling a young QB's confidence especially when you factor in the state of our WR core.

not sure I understand the concerns over Chinn? Chinn isn't really a player you lock into any one position and we were stupid to have done it last season. You put him on the field near the LOS and let him make plays. Reminds me of how people used to talk about basketball before dudes like Giannis started coming around. On run downs we could have Chinn in a box safety role with either Woods or Bell overtop (this admittedly isn't ideal; you'd think we have tried for a more rangy FS type but I dunno what the market looks like for those sorts of players) and a more traditional LB beside Shaq in the middle. On passing downs you can stick him at LB and let him run and stuff someone short of the sticks. It's not like we have to have every player on the field at once.

I think he'll fit right in

I mean, I'm still processing how I feel about the trade; but while the prospect of a new QB is exciting we have literally nothing on offense now besides a (hopefully) solid offensive line.

Horse poo way to lose but you can't go the last 7 minutes of regulation without scoring against a good team and expect to win very often. If I had a shot for every time late in the game that I saw a graphic in the bottom right corner of the screen saying "Duke has gone the last 6+ minutes without scoring a field goal" I'd have probably died of kidney failure 2 weeks ago.

Ryan Young must have some serious dirt on Scheyer to keep getting these minutes while Lively toils away on the bench in OT.

Wow, there sure are a lot of false narratives still surrounding Cam, aren't there? Namely this whole "inaccurate" and "not the best passer stuff", which isn't really true past 2014. Anyway, to answer the OP question there's a bit more to the story than some of the posts you're getting here are leading on. He did injure his shoulder on an int return that KB halfassed, the play itself was just a jumpball to KB that he didn't try for at all. But the return itself, which is what he injured his shoulder on, should've been blown dead. KB clearly downed him and there was a ref standing right beside the play and they still allowed it to go on. Cam dived for the defender to make a tackle and fuged up his shoulder in the process. Oh and did I mention that the return got reversed shortly after? Because you know, everyone with a pair of eyes could see that KB touched him. We got fuged by the refs more than anything; KB's half ass effort allowed the int to happen in the first place but them not blowing it dead when it should've been was the ultimate, direct cause. Here if you'd like to rewatch this infuriating, franchise-altering sequence - In 2018, while the TJ Watt hit is a convienent scapegoat, we don't actually really know what caused his shoulder to start deteriorating the way it did. That hit was malicious as fug and certainly didn't help matters no doubt, but the following two games Cam still played decently - After this stretch is when the deterioration started becoming more obvious. We had to send Henicke out to attempt a hail mary from mid field against Tampa - if you're having to put your backup in to attempt hail maries, you should as a coaching staff know it's time to take him out but apparently this was a foreign concept to Ron. So we can't really be sure what caused it; esp considering his shoulder held up fine in 2017. Whatever it was, his shoulder deteriorated as the year went on and that attempt at a game winning drive against New Orleans late in the year is still one of the most pitiful and upsetting memories I have from watching this team.

Completion percentage is often just a measure of how efficient/inefficient the average pass the QB is asked to make is than anything else. It's mostly a meaningless stat. Especially when we're talking about college players. A big culprit behind Cam's lower CMP%'s here was that under Shula we ran the ball up our guard's ass two times for a yard and then drew up a long developing pass play on 3rd down with a bad line. Often forced errant throws and hits because we were asking Cam to make harder throws on average than just about any other NFL QB besides Rodgers under McCarthy and perhaps Luck in Indy. That said, I think AR does have some large problems as a passer but CMP% isn't really a fair way to measure it.

Pretty cautiously optimistic about this and wasn't my first choice, but thank sweet merciful jesus that it isn't Payton. Definitely prefer this to Wilks as well, especially if he was going to bring Holcomb with him. Will be interested to see what Reich does with the rest of the staff and if he retains anyone from our current one, I'd like for the two huddle fan favorites (Campen and Tabor) to be retained but if he does go in a different direction in that regard hopefully it's a good one.

Russ clashes with what Payton would want to do IMO. The offense Payton runs is predicated heavily on making fast reads and getting the ball out quickly. Lots of pick plays/rub routes and the like. Russ has struggled mightily with seeing the field this season and has questionable pocket presence on a good day dating back to his Seattle tenure. Guy holds the ball for way too long, on average he took the 7th most time to throw of any QB in the NFL this season. I don't think that's an ideal fit, though to be fair he did make it work with Jameis somewhat and Payton's offense does have a reputation of being very QB friendly but I feel like at this stage of his career, he wants more than to just make it work lol. That said, all of these openings have a lot of faults. The most surefire way he could get to work with a young QB is probably Houston, but they're just so far away from a roster standpoint. It'll be interesting to see what team he chooses in any case.

Can't say I agree; I'd have a hard time supporting a coach who not only oversaw and allowed a program which sought to inflict serious injury on our players in the past, but covered it up and refused to shut it down even after being told by the owner directly to do so. Not to mention that he's a playoff choker and the brand of football his teams play is quite unwatchable as a cherry on top. Also, you are aware that this 2015 bandwagoner boogeyman you keep attempting to fall back on.. wouldn't have actually seen the games in which their players were cheapshotting our guys right? The bountygate news broke in 2012. A lot of newer fans wouldn't even be aware of it happening. This is a subjective thing though, so I understand your stance, and I'm certainly not going to hold it against anyone for thinking differently.

Yeah if they hired Payton (or Gregg Williams, for that matter but he has mostly fallen out of the league at this point) I'm gone as well. I'm not sure if it'd be permanent, maybe just until the end of his head coaching tenure because I do love this team's history to death pre-Tepper, but I can't support any team with either of those two on the sideline. Other than that, relocation out of NC is probably about the only other thing that'd make me consider it. Maybe Tepper going fug it and naming himself GM but that seems very unlikely from what we've seen so far; he thankfully doesn't seem like another Mike Brown/Jerry Jones type at least. My fandom has been dwindling for a while now, I find myself forgetting the games are even on from time to time nowadays though I do still at least tune in and watch bits and pieces of the majority of them. Prior to 2018, I didn't miss a single game from the day I became a fan up to that point until I didn't tune into one late in the year when Cam's shoulder was obviously falling off and Ron wouldn't bench him and ever since then it's been a downward trajectory. At the very least, it comforts me knowing some of y'all are still so enthusiastic about the team.

I wish we saw more of this, absolutely awesome legacy formation but it's also effective. Old time offenses used to be based largely on misdirection, I think some of these old formations could still be pretty effective in short yardage situations and generally inside the 10 if you can successfully confuse the defense on where the ball actually went. By the time they figure it out it'll be too late, and running formations a defense hasn't defended since high school (if ever) at the latest is sure to already have them a bit startled. The Chiefs break out vintage plays like this from time to time as well.
