Every team goes into the draft needing something, the difference is only a matter of degrees. Yes I'm well aware that drafting out of desperation because you HAVE to fill need X is a bad formula, so don't strawman me like you did last post and imply that's what I was advocating. As for your having no idea how they could have appeased me, I think I made it pretty clear that trading down to more appropriate spots for appropriate prospects would have been fine, or is it your contention that between Sewell and Christiansen there is no OL prospect worth pursuing? Really? Seems like you're putting a lot more faith into Cam Erving than most would. A former first rounder on his fourth team in six years doesn't scream problem solved to me, or even solid move. It seems more like the thing you do if your heart's not into prioritizing the Oline, but you know you have to sign somebody or you really will be forced to actually draft a starter in the first two rounds. Look, I think we got hosed when the Lions took Sewell at 7. I was stuck in some godforsaken Buffalo Wild Wings in Roanoke of all places and for a good 10 minutes I thought we were golden after the Dolphins didn't take him. Detroit has done so much wrong for so long, why couldn't they have just drafted Barry Sanders or Megatron all over again instead of making everyone listen to me scream epithets at the Ford family and throw my wing bones at some chucklehead wearing a Brady Patriots jersey (Why? Because @#$% that guy, that's why). But... There were 9, count them NINE tackles taken between Sewell and Christiansen, and you're telling me that you have so much faith in New Locker of the Month Club member Cam Erving, so little regard for all nine of those prospects, and think that our WR corps would have been in shambles had we not drafted Marshall in the 2nd, that you can't conceive of the most trade happy GM of the draft making one or two more moves earlier to acquire one of those prospects, or that such a move would be ill advised and we're better off crossing our fingers and hoping yet again that what we got is good enough?

Christian McCaffrey Workload in 2021

FIFY Our line is not keeping any DL's up at night this season. -
My default estimate of Darnold's chances of turning things around here is higher than yours, but part and parcel of the best assessment possible on him as a prospect was to put as quality a line in front of him as possible. IMO it is less likely that Marshall as a rookie in this WR corps is a more meaningful factor in that process than the best OL prospect we could have had instead of him would be.
-
Ah okay, thanks for the explanation. That makes at least a bit more sense.

The draft is not for addressing your needs? I see what you're saying I guess because of how easy it is to acquire a quality starting LT in FA or via trade without giving up your first born and your left hand, your near mint copy of Incredible Hulk 181 (yes I have one, no you can't touch it) and your Honas Wagner. Nowhere did I say we should reach, but surely it didn't escape your notice that Mr. Fitterer seemed unafraid of trading down in this draft, yet didn't do so in the first two rounds to position ourselves for an appropriate prospect whether Slater or someone else. Instead yet again the organization prioritized other positions, some of which were not exactly desperate needs (Marshall might turn out great, but take him out of this draft and tell me our WR corps doesn't still look good). You can make positive or negative comments about any draft pick, and overall I'm excited about what we did in the draft, but no amount of spin will change the fact that we didn't make the OL a priority commensurate with the level of need. Fitterer made a lot of deals, yet stood pat with the first two picks and went elsewhere. That could come back to bite us in the arse.
-
That's not a foregone conclusion. It might happen, or he might disappoint. Declaring that mid 3rd round picks will start by season's end is just trying to make your hope sound like you know something others don't. You don't. Neither do I. Nothing would make me happier than for Christensen to blossom into a long term starter and believe me when I say that I hope so every bit as fervently as you do, probably more. My ire is about the draft choices revealing that despite the change in leadership and the blatantly obvious cautionary tale of Cam's career, the Panthers are STILL content to gamble with protecting the qb, rather than make it an organizational priority. Show me the offseason move that says otherwise. I'll wait.

Not to be a pill, but how often does anyone daydream about all of their receiving talent going to waste because the team failed yet again to upgrade a mediocre OL? For Marshall to blow the top off of the D, Darnold will have to have plenty of time to throw the ball. The chances that drafting a maybe guard maybe tackle prospect that some scouts had rated lower in the 3rd, and an overweight guard in the 5th were an immediate upgrade are not something I would bet on. Raise your hand if you think Cam Erving is Carolina's LT of the fut... pres... bargain bin. I think Brady et al have been focusing too much on shiny new toys without focusing enough on what is needed for those toys to shine.

I sorely wanted at least one OL starter from this draft, preferably LT, and it does not look like we got it. I will be pissed at the Lions for a while for grabbing Sewell one spot ahead of us, especially if he turns out to be as good as advertised. We'll see if Christensen pans out, but as of this moment our biggest weakness on offense wasn't WR depth, it was OL, and there were better options on the board than Brady when we drafted Marshall. All of this WR talent doesn't matter unless Darnold is upright to throw the ball. After years and years of patchwork OL play and the unit getting short shrift when it came to the draft year after year, I was very much hoping this was the year we got serious about the OL, but the FO's approach so far looks to be more of the same in this regard as in the past. I like a lot of what I see otherwise, but if Darnold gets hit and knocked down and chased around a lot this year, I'll be yelling Fitterer's name along with some choice epithets at the tv. The critical and immediate need to protect your team's most crucial position continues to elude this organization year after year, seemingly regardless of who is running what part of the show. For the umpteenth year in a row we're going to trot a patchwork OL out there and cross our fingers. So tiresome.

Thanks for the info, but how does this relate to safety or concussions? What am I missing here?

Panthers Confidential - A Look Into the Panthers Offseason

Sir, there seems to be a rather large quantity of urine in your breakfast cereal. -
Does anyone have any insight into why the league has this rule? It strikes me as the sort of arbitrary nonsense as your HOA dictating exactly where you can and can't fly a flag on your own @#$%ing property. @#%$ off with this sort of arbitrary pointless nonsense. Unless you can put forth a non stupid reason, let them wear however many different helmets they want in a season. Stupid.

The Athletic on sale this weekend

Know a guy who is the staff medic at an ED clinic. People pay good money for a tremendous boner. -
I cannot for the life of me wrap my head around why someone would care how a professional athlete dresses enough to include it in a list of perceived negatives. "Yeah 1usctrojan gave an amazing performance in his last film, but did you see what he wore on the red carpet at the Oscars? So gross. Why did I notice? Oh there were cameras there and my life is so devoid of meaning that how public entertainment figures dress is something that factors into my opinion of them." Me? I really mostly care about how the man performed on the field. The way we obsess over celebrities lives off the clock in this country is bizarre.

Luke Kuechly, Thomas Davis updates
1of10Charnatives replied to Mr. Scot's topic in Carolina Panthers
You missed beautiful young wife who he gets to spend as much time with as he wants while newlywed. Seriously the selfish part of me wants him to take a path towards coaching, but that's an all consuming career choice by all accounts. Stop and think about it a moment. If you don't get to just relax and enjoy life in Luke's current situation, when do you? The man is living a dream and he earned it. Good for him. Football will always be there if he wants to come back to it. Hunt and fish your heart out young man. -
No matter what happens, this thread will not wind up making the OP look good.

I favor keeping Moton, just not for elite LT money. He is good, but how many pro bowls has he played in? How many All Pro teams has he made? You don't get paid based off your own assessment of your worth, you get paid off the market's assessment of your worth, and so far the market does not seem to be deeming him elite. Also he doesn't actually play LT. If the market has decided that tackles are just tackles, and is no longer making a distinction between left and right side value (a whole separate conversation) then fine, but the fact remains there is no consensus he's elite, so why exactly does he deserve elite money? Overpaying existing players was one of the most obvious sins of Hurney past. We all celebrated his departure. Why in the world would we want our new GM to become Hurney 2.0 in this respect?

Oh man. Tell me about it. This one New Year's I got absolutely hammered on hope. Just sloshed out of my gourd. Or was it Halloween? Anyway, I just hope I never wake up nude on the hood of my car with my keys up my arse again. Don't mess with hope kids. It will seriously @#%$ you up.

I'd also like to put in a request for chicken marsala.

Unless you acknowledge that acquiring a quality qb who can be successful in the NFL is something that is in no small part a crapshoot, a fact which all available evidence points strongly to. QB's careers can be derailed or helped by the situation they find themselves in, and teams can make educated guesses to improve their odds, but history shows there is a large element of luck in whether any one prospect pans out. So in the end we won't really have been finessed by the Jets, because no matter what happens, Darnold was still a highly touted prospect obviously stuck in a dysfunctional franchise, and the trade cost of acquiring him while he is still young and very much a viable candidate to become a franchise qb was far less than the typical cost to acquire such a prospect, so even if he doesn't pan out, it was worth the shot.

The value of rock / paper / scissors
1of10Charnatives replied to Mr. Scot's topic in Carolina Panthers
Rock/Paper/scissors as a means to gauge competitiveness is a flawed premise to start. It would only work if you assume your prospect is so dumb he doesn't understand it's not a game of still but a game of random chance. Unless you genuinely believe that it's not random chance but skill at reading your opponent and determining which option he will choose before he chooses it. Essentially mind reading. If you don't believe mind reading is an acquirable skill, then the notion that rock/paper/scissors is a game that competitiveness applies to in a meaningful way is bunk. This story makes me laugh at Nick. -
Should Carolina Bring In Alex Smith

I both use a 50 dollar ergonomic keyboard AND always have a drink at my computer desk. This company's product has paid for itself multiple times by preventing me from having to buy another. https://www.protectcovers.com/products/perfect-fit-covers/keyboard-covers.html
