Not sure you comprehend what that means or what is going on. Trading down is suppose to mean an increase in value, either this year or next, not equal value while at the same time failing to draft better talent. Basically trading down should always benefit the team trading down. The only benefit here is quantity, not value, which is fuging stupid. As said, trading a quarter for a dime and a nickel is dumb. This only works if we have superior scouting for talent...which I guess we don’t know but seems like ego to me when your GM is off doing poo no one else does or really ever has, kind of like the Hurney trade ups.

Opinions..franchise taking Oline in later rounds
onmyown replied to Jmac's topic in Carolina Panthers
Would have been nice to be able to trade down and take one of the 3 OTs taken shortly after us. I have to believe the FO like at LEAST one of them. But perhaps they couldn’t find a trading partner. The fact tackle is so hard to find, like a QB, means you need to draft more of them to find your guy, not less. Seems they get that with QB but not tackle. At least spend reasonable draft picks on more than two (Little, Moton) in what? 18 years? Guess there is Otah so that’s 3 in 18 years. Couple free agents like Oher and Okung.... Thats not a lot of activity since Gross was drafted. Hope they resign Moton and I’ll feel a bit better but just mine, if they don’t then Paradis leaves I mean that’s 5 positions to fill...it’s going to be comical at that point. -
Yea...I have yet to see any ‘grade’ above average for Horn...like 8+ sites.

Tepper wanted Fields. Let his guys make the football decisions
onmyown replied to Zod's topic in Carolina Panthers
I think it will sell plenty of beers when the third QB in a row including cam gets demolished behind Swiss cheese oline. With how inept this team is building the oline they need more than one pick at this point. I’m not sure why when cam left no one seems to think oline is as much of a problem anymore. -
Yea I don’t see my steals in the second lol...the talent is gone. FO ignoring the oline yet again. It’s weird how last year’s oline ranked below cams entire careers line rank average and yet was easily people’s #2 complaint (out of like 6) only next to shula for the failure of that era yet the complain seemed to have completely disappeared for some reason not saying there was an olineman to take that high at 8 but it appears the Panthers will yet again ignore this huge issue

I hate the pick but Smith is the only player I wanted more. A trade down would’ve been nice. Would’ve rather paid BB instead of Shaq and traded down, that would’ve been in an ideal world but it is what it is.

Round 1 - Carolina Panthers Select CB Jaycee Horn
onmyown replied to Zod's topic in Carolina Panthers
how fuging stupid, could’ve just paid BB instead of shaq, now we get to watch the third CB in a row play at a high level then walk after spending a top pick on him after an all defense draft prior sorry this is just dumb -
It was a mistake and they’re not perfect. It’s not the mistake so much as the recover. They learned quick this was a no go and moved on as fast as humanly possible, that’s important to remember. No way in the deep depths of hell would JR ever of moved on so quick and risk losing a single cent, dragging it on and on for dear life at the expense of the team and fans. We’ve seen it plenty players and coaches. The mistake (start) sucked but I disagree, the change of pace (finish) is very nice.

lord some of you babies whine too damn much, whine because they got rid of washed up cam, whine for signing TB for two years, whine TB sucked, whine about not getting Watson for 3 firsts and 2 seconds, whine it’s taking Tepper longer than one off-season to find a franchise qb and then whine some more because a first and a second pick may be spent on two different prospects with potential to be next franchise qb like damn tep burns down beach houses because of people like you

Sewell was never going to make it to us in the first place. He is the obvious first, non qb prospect for really any team that isn’t going to draft a QB. Pitts and Chase are the runner ups but as far as value and talent, Sewell is easily first choice. There are only a few teams with a solidified, high caliber LT in the entire NFL. That said, I’ve come to accept a trade down is best possibly scenario or Fields if he drops, I won’t be mad at either.

Analytics that will shape Draft Strategy or my name isn't MHS831
onmyown replied to MHS831's topic in Carolina Panthers
So get yet another top tier CB just to let them walk again. I mean if it was that big of a deal we should’ve just signed a proven player like BB last year and saved the pick. I’m not refuting the logic but man does it not make them look like a jackass doing that? -
Gotta remember that’s the culture Cam created, most our fans came from Cam, and I suspect they never knew much about NFL football to begin with let alone the history of the Panthers. Also why a lot of them had no understanding of why Hurney 2.0 was such a bad idea lol.
-
I think Jones, Lance and Fields are all in the same realm just with very different knocks on each of them. But personally I like Fields better than the other two. I do not like the idea of Fields going to ATL and sitting behind Ryan for a year or so.
-
The situation wasn’t the point. The point was to not settle for one guy and always being diligent in finding the next. I guess technically Grier was this type of move but was dumb.
-
I just said people. If I had to guess...I’d say at least 50% of this forum. And that was before the 49ers trade. People seemed to flip poo about the 49ers trade in the thread when it happened because it wasn’t us.

Sewell is not going to be there. I’d bet a large amount of money on that. They probably have one guy they’re confident in - Pitts or Slater I don’t know but they are probably feeling things out in case that player is gone. If ya only have one player that may or may not be there this is the route to go. It doesn’t mean if somehow a player falls they didn’t expect they will still trade down. No reason to freak out. You also have to consider how the draft plays out and just how valuable that 8 pick may be to another team. I’d assume if the Panthers do trade down it will happen draft night. If it happens before, yea I’d be scratching my head unless we hustle someone for picks.

Why wouldn’t it be a competition? I’m a true believer in it. It’s what Rivera, Fox and Hurney didn’t believe in. Hell let TB compete too if were fuged cap wise for him anyway (sarcasm mostly). In all seriousness the Packers didn’t waste a pick when they already had Favre, Colts didn’t for Luck when they already had Manning, Patriots have used 2/3 round for QBs all along Brady’s later years...you keep swinging until you hit. If the Panthers had done this when Cam started getting hurt, who knows we might’ve traded down and gotten Lamar Jackson. Yea that’s another discussion and a lot of speculation but you never know. I think it’s good for the players to know there is someone keeping them on their toes. There is absolutely nothing wrong having a lot of young talent for the ‘next man up’ at QB instead of just a backup. It’s what the teams above did, Eagles took Hurts. Despite the picks given up, in no way did Darnold earn his spot as the Panther’s starting QB. Why give him that complacency? It’s not that I’d prefer it, as I said I prefer a top LT but I won’t be mad at it, I’d understand it and value the effort. And a trade down while we’re at it? It’s worth it. You keep swinging until you hit. We have this notion of keeping one QB with talent and never upkeeping the position with talent not placeholders. I wouldn’t mind seeing that changing.
-
Yep. Say Fields falls and we draft him. Darnold plays lights out. Fields never plays a game. Darnold and Groppolo garnered a second + playing mediocre to bad. You really think Fields couldn’t be traded for at least a second? I’d even say a first in this scenario. If you watched Jimmy Johnson’s interview he sad a boatload of calls always come in even after the draft for players, thou rarely happen. Doubt those calls are offers for less than what was spent lol. This isn’t Hurney ball we aren’t clinging on to players for dear life on the cost of millions. I have no doubt Fit would auction off a player of potential for a good return if it presented itself. It’s worth having insurance IMO, and wouldn’t be mad whatsoever with a QB. Hell a trade down like their talking about for Lance or Fields or Jones and picking up an extra second or even first next year is gold IMO, I’d prefer the best LT at 8 for sure, but I won’t lie saying I wouldn’t be happy with one of the above 3 battling it out with Darnold in camp.
-
Spending a 2,4, 6, and 1 to find a franchise QB doesn’t worry me. How can people want to trade 3 firsts and some seconds for one but get their panties in a wad over drafting one to compete with Darnold? lol They’re only wasted if no one works out out, that is ineptness but placing all bets on Darnold might be too - when you have a shot to pick up someone and Darnold flops. Might be that no one works out, which is possible, but I won’t be mad at the effort or the unknown.

Shaq did well last year. Statistically speaking he did really well. But he can make some really boneheaded moves, give up big plays, and I can’t help but cringe when he needs to make an open field tackle. Not saying he isn’t a starter, he is. He’ll need two more years like last year to arguably live up to his paychecks. I said last year he’ll need three more and he delivered. But for the price, I expected less mistakes. I also don’t feel like he offer much as a consistent leadership role. It is a Hurney contract though what can you do? He was fired for a reason. For reference, I mean the second time (eye roll).
-
That would be a nice change of pace from wish we hadn’t signed someone for more than one year. I feel like and like the option that he plays well and wants to be here, there’s no reason he can’t.
-
For a Derek Anderson type role? Sure. But I don’t think Smith is there yet...mentally. But he should be. Clearly loves the game.
