You don't seem to understand how bonus and dead money works. It would in no way be the same. Takes one time on sportsman or OTC using the various options of cuts and releases and how they affect a contract. Specifically you need to understand the difference between salary and bonus. He's much easier to cut in the final year of his contract for reasons hat should be obvious math.

The timeline of that story is odd. It doesn't sound like his quip got his foot in the door but maybe sealed the deal. He got his foot in the door because they decided to reset and request more interviews.
