He already is a 1000 yard receiver . . . he'll be a consistent all pro with a good QB.

So, you're saying all of the great ones figured it out by year three. Gotcha. So we need a QB. The problem with looking at "records" is that it doesn't necessarily tell you how they played. You have to dig deeper than win/loss. You need to identify QB's who were statistically similar their first three years to Darnold, then show franchise level improvement the next two. Go ahead. We'll wait.

I'd actually take his word on a QB before Mel Kiper . . . so there's that.

Well, I guess you could say the Jets haven't been the best at evaluating QB's. So, from the 49er's perspective, do you really want to name your guy and have the Jets snag him? It would be just about the most Jets thing that could happen. Is it actually 4D chess? The 49ers smokescreening people away from Mac Jones to make someone else take him? I dunno, it's the lying season for sure. I can't fathom Mac Jones at 3. But I couldn't fathom Trubisky at 2 either.

I don't think you remember the draft correctly. For example, this profile shows Prescott as a 6th round grade. The article was written BEFORE the DUI. In this profile, he's listed as a third round prospect, AFTER the DUI happened. DUI aside, he was viewed as wildly inconsistent by most draft scouts. This is not something you're looking for in a prospect. I've seen draft projections for him from the second round to the sixth. He fell right in the middle. In fact, he fell right in the middle of the 15 QB's drafted that year. Dak's college production and game tape put him in the middle rounds of the draft, and that's where he went. Mac Jones college production SERIOUSLY overshadowed Dak's. I mean, I am not a Jones fan, but let's face it . . . the guy lost two games in his CAREER.

Dak should not be your comparison there. The two are nothing alike. Dak didn't even lead the SEC in passing his last year in college. In fact, a much closer comparison for Dak was The Golden Calf of Bristol . . . and no one wanted another one of those. Dak was a less accomplished version of The Golden Calf of Bristol in the end. I think Dak was hurt far more by where he went to school. As a Miss State fan, I hurts to say it, but the school isn't exactly known for turning out NFL talent. Sure, they have a few here and there, but nothing like Florida or Alabama.

Not sure how this makes sense . . . Tua is left handed. To the Dolphins, RT is the "money" spot. Why would they fill that spot with a FA? All of this sounds like 2 + 2 = 6.327 . . . something doesn't add up here.

I'm sorry. There is NO WAY we trade out of #8 with Lance, Fields and Slater still on the board.

The thing you're not thinking of is that Darnold already has two strikes against him. I grant you a world of "But the Jets". However, consider what we'd be saying if Darnold was at (pretty much) any other club. "Failure". Do you want to bet your franchise on a guy one strike from being labeled a failure? I don't! That's why I am 100% ok with drafting a QB if one we like is there - in whatever round. I hope Darnold succeeds, but hope isn't something you should base your franchise around. TB5, Grier and PJ are not valid fallback plans. We know who they are and it's not NFL QB's.

JT is pretty thorough when you're looking at just film study. He's very open about the fact he hasn't actually talked to any of the prospects and bases his opinion purely on the film. He'd probably make a pretty darn good QB coach if he wanted to go that route.

Alex Smith displeased with how he was handled in Washington
BrianS replied to JawnyBlaze's topic in Carolina Panthers
Feel bad for Smith. He's a guy who did the best he could with what he had. As far as WTF, I hope they reap what they sow.- 12 replies

LTs & arm length (basically: This draft's OTs are great but...)
BrianS replied to saX man's topic in Carolina Panthers
I would be over the moon if we manage to land another Jordan Gross. We all liked Jordan when he was here, but when he retired is when we really realized just how GOOD he was. LT just wasn't a thought during his career. It was just "handled". -
That's what I'm thinking. I don't blame us for taking a shot, the cost was (relatively for a QB) minimal. I do think there were better players to take a shot on. I know lots of people say "but NY screwed him" . . . and maybe so. But probably not. Look at the comparable situations. Mark Sanchez . . . looks eerily similar to Darnold. High draft pick, low games played in college - at USC no less. Actually took care of the ball pretty good in college, but clearly couldn't figure it out in the NFL. Left NY, no change. Still bad. Chad Pennington . . . actually had one good season in NY . . . but never made it. Another high pick in NY. Left NY and never fully put it together. You could argue his best season was his third in NY. Geno Smith? Not drafted first round. Another failed QB in NYC. I'm afraid that the problem is that no one up there knows how to evaluate a QB. And we now bought in to that problem. He's our QB, I'll certainly root for him to put it together. But I also have no problem seeing us take a rookie if one we like drops to us.

Analytics that will shape Draft Strategy or my name isn't MHS831
BrianS replied to MHS831's topic in Carolina Panthers
Sigh. Yes, it does, I was trying to make it easy to read. Only eight teams last year scored fewer points than we did. Conversely, only 11 teams had more red zone opportunities. How many teams with more opportunties, scored fewer points? NONE. How many teams with fewer opportunties, scored more points? EIGHT. But seriously, I don't need stats to tell me our offensive line was below par. I just need to watch us fail over and over to see that we couldn't move people when we needed to. In terms of your stats, you are simply showing raw conversion percentage. What you AREN'T showing is distance to go. Obviously, covering receivers is important. Of course. Were we bad on 3rd down? Yes, of course. Awful. The real question is were we offering too many 3rd and short / medium opportunities? If so, the problem wasn't third down at all. It was first and second where we failed. -

BrianS replied to MHS831's topic in Carolina Panthers
That's a lot of words. I can shortcut that a bit. We score TD's 50% of the time we are in the red zone. If that doesn't scream OFFENSIVE LINE I don't know what does. -
POV: You are Joe Brady. What do you want in the draft?
BrianS replied to CanadianCat's topic in Carolina Panthers
For me to make the Joe Brady call, I need to know if Joe Brady is sold on Sam Darnold. If I'm trying to read the tea leaves, I'd say the fact that we didn't immediately pick up the 5th year option tells me we aren't sure. From an offensive perspective, if a QB I love falls, we take that guy. If no QB falls, take Slater / Sewell whichever we like or is still on the board. If none of those are available, we should look at what defenders are on the board for the good of the team. -
The "plan" could easily be to make the decision after the draft. I don't have a problem with us picking up his fifth year. What I would have a problem with is extending him before we see whether he is a victim of the Jets / Gase or a flop.

What would you give up to trade up to 4?
BrianS replied to irrevalentfalconsfan's topic in 2023 NFL Draft
I like the move even though I have significant reservations about the player. It means we don't have to give up three first round picks to get someone. If a guy we like falls, great, draft him. If not we can at least get through the draft knowing TB5 won't be under center. I think there were better options out there than Darnold, but I agree with the Panthers in the thought that we couldn't go into the draft with the same three QB's who ended last season. -
From the pre-draft Rhule/Fitterer, There is but 1 Question to answer:

Really? You think this is ok? Big, fat PASSSSSS. Chiefs got fleeced. They got a guy now who is going to want 15 mil+ per season for at least four years . . . and gave up THREE PICKS THIS YEAR. Very glad we were not in on that. We have Moton. That's enough franchise tackles.

Which brought the Falcons how many Lombardi trophies? How many playoff berths? The Julio Jones years have featured a grand total of four winning seasons. All while they had a CLEAR franchise QB. Which we do not. Instead of focusing on Chase, think of our situation this way: If we had a top 10 QB under center, what would DJ and Robby look like? Bearing in mind, with TB5 at QB, both of them were in the top 15 last year. DJ Moore averaged 18 yards per catch last year . . . EIGHTEEN! Eighty percent of his catches went for first downs! We raved about how clutch Curtis Samuel was last year, and only 50% of his catches were for first downs. DJ was the epitome of clutch. How many times did we see DJ running WIDE ASS OPEN deep last year. It was damn sickening. We don't need to draft an superstar WR, we already have one! WR's don't win games, QB's do. WR's are not the secret sauce, that's your QB. The real question your staff have to answer is: Do we believe our QB is Rodgers, Wilson, Brady, Mahomes, etc. Those guys can put the team on their shoulders and win games for you. As good as Tyreek Hill, Davante Adams, Mike Evans and DK Metcalf are they are utterly irrelevant without that franchise guy pulling the trigger. If a guy your staff believes in is there when you are on the clock, you take the QB. It's super simple. There is no such thing as "too many" legit NFL QB's on your roster.
-
Would you rather just wash out a second round draft pick or perhaps give him an opportunity to earn a roster spot? We have him. He's cheap. If he becomes a starting guard, great. If not, we can walk away and say we gave him every opportunity to make it here. There is no down side to giving him a chance.
-
It's pretty clear we don't see him as the answer at LT. I wouldn't mind seeing him get a preseason shot at playing guard. While it wouldn't be an ideal outcome for us, if he turns into a serviceable guard at least the pick wasn't a waste.

I agree, arm strength can be overrated . . . however it also cannot be ignored. May I present for your consideration our 2020 QB, Teddy Bridgewater. Teddy can throw a catchable ball to a spot. When you look at advanced stats, Aaron Rodgers showed 7.9 intended air yards per attempt, while Teddy showed 7.1 iaypa. Relatively similar averages. However, does ANYONE doubt that Rodgers is capable of pushing it downfield? Now flip the coin . . . does ANYONE think TB5 is capable of driving a ball downfield? The arm strength is important because it keeps the defense honest. You don't have to be Favre, Elway or Rodgers to get it done . . . or even pre-shoulder apocalypse Cam, but you do need a "good" arm. You have to be able to legitimately threaten the defense deep. Actually, Cam is probably the best example of this. Once defenses realized his arm was gone, he became a completely average QB. He only holds on to that "average" label because he can still run pretty well for a QB. Take away his run game and frankly he's out of the league.
