  1. Wrong thinking. DJ not getting open is a lack of effort on his part. There is no calculus to a route tree. Honestly, there aren't very many routes across every offense in the league. Receivers get open based on their own skills and effort most of the time. On some occasions like a mesh or a dagger concept you can help a receiver get open. But most of the time getting open is on the receiver making good cuts at the right time against the defense being run. Not telegraphing the route. Dozens of things.
  2. When I watch the games, Brown is now constantly double teamed on pass and run plays. That tells me he is doing what he should be doing. When one defender commands two players, it puts your defense at an advantage. If you can force the offense to double team two of your players - here's looking at you Burns - the rest of your defense will look great. This team has the makings of our 2015 defense if we can just get the right coaching in place and fix our LBers.
  3. For all the folks defending him, please rewatch the tape. Getting open is a matter of high effort on every play, regardless if you are the intended target or not. DJ is not doing that, and it's not the first time he's been lazy. DJ has the ability to be Steve Smith. But he's not playing NEARLY at the effort level of 89. He's not even playing at the level he has shown in the past. If we see these sorts of metrics, the coaching staff sees them. And then it becomes a loop. Staff sees he isn't getting open, they call fewer plays for him, so his effort goes down, and he gets open less, staff sees . . . etc. DJ can control one thing: his effort. It's currently not there and it's very fair to call it out, even when we like the player.
  4. Sadly, we have a guy CAPABLE of being the modern Steve Smith, but he lacks the fire Agent 89 brought to the table every single snap. I remember 89 just friggin ENDING people . . . as a blocker. I don't see DJ ever getting there unfortunately. CMC is a completely different player.
  5. Shaq has to be cut. It's 12 million in cap savings. Yes, it's nearly 12 million dead, but that's too much money to restructure while getting his salary where it should be. YGM is one of those players who just kinda gets by. He's not ever going to be more than an average NFL player. Maybe he sticks around on short term deals. But you need those players on your team. You can't have above average players everywhere. The NFL isn't set up that way.
  6. I wouldn't mind Campen sticking around for the new regime. He's made a very clear difference in our line.
  7. I get the Rams don't seem to be scoring a lot this year, but they've played the Bills, 49ers and Cowboys. That's the top three scoring defenses in the league. That's like the murderers row of defenses.
  8. Looking at QB success under the lens of SB wins, particularly in the last 20 years, is not a very good metric. Tom Brady has been in the league, and even when he isn't winning the SB he is affecting your metrics. We have been watching a level of success that will never be seen again. His mere presence in the league has skewed success stats for many players. How many SB's would Payton Manning have won minus Tom Brady? It's tough, but you need to find other measures for QB's over the last 23 years.
  9. He's wrong. The Cowboys are winning with Cooper Rush - their backup. The Giants are winning with Daniel Jones, who was very close to being shoved out. The Eagles are winning with Jalen Hurts who couldn't do anything consistently well early in his career. Rivera should have said "We haven't done a good job developing and protecting our QB and the other teams have". But that would be taking responsibility for the situation. Can't have that.
  10. The problem with Teddy Bridgewater isn't Teddy Bridgewater. It's basically a synopsis of the entire Rhule era. We signed Teddy as a bridge QB to a draft pick. We signed him for THREE YEARS. Then, after one year Rhule convinced himself that they were closer than they were and started moving heaven and earth to get "anyone but Teddy". Imagine if we had actually kept everything. Kept Bridgewater. He'd be our QB this year. Kept our picks. What would all those picks have turned into? Kept our salary cap. We've been burning cap on BAD QB's for the entire Rhule tenure. Stop it. Maybe Bridgewater isn't the guy. But he was good enough for us to win games once the rest of the team was built. He would never take us to the playoffs, but we could have winning seasons. Players, agents, coaches and executives around the league could look at the team and go "All they need is a QB". I could do with a few winning seasons around here, even if we aren't really a playoff threat.
  11. He deserves a chance to do the job of a GM without someone else telling him what he needs to accomplish. You cannot put him fully at fault when it has become increasingly clear that Rhule held too much power over the organization. Maybe he sinks, maybe he swims, but I think he needs a chance to do it as a real GM.
  12. McDermott's last year starters: Wilks first year starters: Yes, he got McDermott's defense.
  13. Over the top?!?!?! FFS! How much more "over the top" do they need to be? They have the #2 scoring offense and the #1 scoring defense. The Bills don't need CMC, let alone would they give up anything for him. That team is built RIGHT.
  14. The problem with that is that it's exactly backwards. Want to build a winning culture? It's easy. WIN. Certain things you can influence. Don't bring in a bunch of sleazebag players. Ask the players you have to give maximum effort. Then you have to do your part as a coach. Take the players you have, figure out their strengths and weaknesses, then create a program that gets the most out of them. Dial up the right schemes and plays. All of that leads to winning, and winning then creates the winning culture.
  15. This. I've heard and seen nothing but good things about him as a position coach. But I've observed only bad when he gets a greater degree of responsibility.
  16. He was also terrible as our DC. I think the guy is at his level as a position coach. There is nothing wrong with that. He seems like a good dude who connects well with the players . . . but just not more than that.
  17. I actually find it very interesting that we call so much RPO. It made me really think. Was this offense designed for Matt Corral? Serious question. RPO was his bread and butter in college. Quick release? Off platform? Three step drops? Fits him to a tee. I think we had serious intentions of putting Corral under center this year. So much so that we designed an offense around it. Absolutely no way to prove it, but there's a good argument to be made. This "looks" like a Corral offense.
  18. I don't know if Fitts will be any good or not. But in fairness, it's very difficult to objectively judge this when Rhule has / had so much control in his hands. The truth is that none of us can be sure how many of the decisions are Rhule and how many are Fitts. We need an owner to lock in a clear front office structure so that we can place credit and blame where they are due.
  19. You got it right in the end, but Cam was done when he was replaced. It was the right call. Rivera was done when he was replaced. Correct call. The problem was the replacements we brought in are/were not up to the standards. We all listened to Tepper when he said mediocrity was not acceptable. Unfortunately, we assumed he meant we would be striving for better. Instead, we are now terrible. Hooray for the death of mediocrity!
  20. I think we need to see at least a full season of Dorsey as a coordinator. Right now, all he's done is taken over the offense Brian Daboll built. Yes, Dorsey gets a LOT of credit for helping develop Josh Allen. But let's see him call plays and be creative.
  21. I think it was either three or four drops against the Cards for Ian / Tommy combined. I will say that in the run game, our scheme asks them to do some REALLY stupid things.
