  1. We’re a college run organization in a professional league.
  2. As a new owner, Tepper made some critical errors - 1) he did not hire a seasoned GM right away to navigate the NFL waters, 2) he hired a college coach without a lot of professional ties to be the HC, who 3) hired a college OC and DC without the pro pedigree either. We are an NFL franchise run by college guys. And outside of Brady’s Burrow stint, not even prominent college guys. Not only does the league probably not respect us, I know our connections and contacts must suck. And when you do that you MUST be successful on the field. You can’t give years and hope they figure it out. And you certainly can’t show up to court a Top 5 QB and think you’re gonna land him, even if you are holding the biggest bag. I’m sure Watson’s folks did their research and were like, “they don’t have real football people in place for us to be successful. Cam probably told them as much. ”You ain’t gotta get ready if you stay ready.” We showed up to the dance not ready EVEN AFTER a year. Still not ready. That’s unforgivable.
  3. We are regularly the only team mentioned in the Watson sweepstakes who no one in the media provides commentary about. If I’m Tepper, that’s what bothers me the most. The irrelevance. But we also have a lame duck coach. We need to establish a culture and some sort of brand outside of hiring a bunch of college names that lose on the pro level.
  4. I think it’s hard to look at any updates, because it’s hard for people to remember that while the Texans and Watson have to work together, they are not on the same side. It is in the Texans’ best interest to get the best offer from as many teams as possible that aren’t a detriment to them (i.e. in the division/conference). It’s in Watson’s best interest to be somewhere he wants to be. No coincidence that at this point, Deshaun has entertained every southeast team that is in a position to make an offer in the NFC. If you’re the Texans you are pushing for him to give you a list of teams, so you can THEN leverage each of those teams for the best offer. No way the Texans give up that leverage by giving HIM a list of teams to choose from. If that was the case, he could just say “I want X team” and the Texans would have to take the best deal from that team, giving that team all the leverage. The Texans also don’t want to take the cap hit this year so they need him gone. And if it weren’t the case, then Watson wouldn’t be talking to multiple teams. Texans need at least 2-3 teams to play ball in this, which they have. So it doesn’t matter who Deshaun wants the MOST, only who he is willing to go to. Then the Texans can make them fight it out for the best offer.
  5. I get all the trades for more picks now for OUR TEAM. Rhule is a team builder. He can either try and create an identity on a team by hoping you selected a few really talented guys correctly and they can create what you want, or you flood the roster with guys maybe a little less talented, but are exactly the cultural fit and style you want for your kind of football. We’re building the back half of our roster with Rhule type guys so in the future, we just need to sprinkle on super game changing talents. It’s not a bad idea.
  6. We are coming off of one of the most boring reboots of a team in order to have a CHANCE of drafting a future star at QB, and the closest we got was the #8 pick. If we have to sell the farm in order to get a sure-fire Top 5 QB who has proven himself, you do it. For those worried about it setting us back, we’re already in the set back position with no truly competitive team and the #8 to show for it. You get the elite QB and trust your organization can build around him even after what you give up. You’d have to have that same trust in them to build even if you didn’t have him. The Packers (which one would consider not the best run franchise, but no where close to the worst), screwed with a RD1 pick and selected a backup while having the soon-to-be MVP QB under center they pissed off while doing so. You might easily deem that to be one of the largest wastes of a 1st round pick. And the franchise suffered all the way to ARod leading them to the NFC Championship. THAT is how important having THE guy is. Three first rounders is nothing for that type of guy. We’re in year two of a rebuild not five. If we have to start from scratch again, that’s what we do, because we’ll be starting with a much more proven and higher ceiling.
  7. I wanted to think of an analogy for this situation. The closest I got was telling someone they could buy 1000 lottery tickets and be certain one of those tickets wins the big Powerball and that person saying, “nah, I’d rather invest what I’d pay for the 1000 tickets into the stock market.” It simply doesn’t make a lot of sense being that you invest your money in order to be Powerball rich. We have CMC in hopes that while we have him, we can find a QB who puts us in a position to contend for a Super Bowl. Or in this scenario we simply go directly to accomplishing that goal with the franchise QB and add a piece to get us there in a shorter time. The window is actually smaller for us to be successful with CMC than it is with DW. In a perfect world, we have both of them, but there is literally nothing to be accomplished by having CMC over DW.
