It is just speculation. That said, it is crucial to recognize how these things get done and how business is conducted in the league. Picking up the 5th year is not so much an outlier contract year. Once that is done, it's not really realistic to think they are going to sign Young to an extension that would be in the ballpark of that 5th year. That is why if a team and player are not a good long-term fit, they tend part ways before that 5th year.

The option year is not usually viewed as a try-out year. The team at that point should feel comfortable enough to make a clear decision. It is more like an engagement period. Daniel Jones is an example of an option not being picked up, playing out his 4th year successfully, and then the Giants were a bit over a barrel in sending a qb on their way that got them into the playoffs, or working a deal out with the player. It's easy to make fun of them for signing Jones after saying no thanks after the 3rd year, but they were between a rock and a hard place at that point.

Right. So picking up the option is essentially a prelude to a big money extension. The concept of 1st rounders having that extra option year was to give teams the financial control over a prospect, with the assumption that the team was planning on keeping them and signing them to an extension off their rookie deal. Teams are free to do a Jags-deal if the idea is that it might be more sensible economically to get the player wrapped up long-term earlier after the 3rd year, and subverting market forces that may cause values to go up. So it is a gamble if you think you are buying in on a player low and getting a deal that you may not secure 2 years down the road in many ways.

The 5th year option price tag is 26.5 million I think. He is eligible for an extension, forgoing the set price of the option year. That would be for whatever negotiated value they come up with. The Jags signed Lawrence to an extension and skipped the option year. 5 year, 275 million, 200 million gauranteed. $55 million annually. This would most likely be the starting negotiation figure, since they are both former #1 overalls. The Jets declined Zach Wilson's option year and he was dealt to another team in a pick swap deal.

Not at all. It's going to take something dramatic to break Tepper's heart though. You know he is cozy right now in his smugness and confidence that "see, he was right all along, and owning a winning team, being the mastermind architect behind the turnaround, and a having a 'face of the league player' isn't so hard after all." Well, not hard for someone like him anyway.

I don't think he has been either. That said, I haven't paid any attention to their injury report down the stretch here, if he has even been listed at all. -

There has been some talk and speculation around that in the last meeting they went run-heavy to shield their defense, which hasn't stopped anyone since their bye week, and that Mayfield is not well. Whether true or not, there is some sense in that thinking. Maybe they air it out today instead. -

The home field/seeding thing seems to be an ESPN-driven talking point whenever it does happen. The word from the NFL has always been there should be a reward for winning the division, it's important and it means something, and if a team wants a home playoff game, win their division. -

We can maybe trade Brown for a 1st and use that towards a wr in the upcoming draft. He's probably never going to be more valuable than right now. Do it Tepper! Brass balls! -
But he loves Little Debbie oatmeal snack cakes, and promises he is not going to be the coach at Alabama.

3-loss team. They would've been a great selection for the Tony the Tiger Frosted Flakes Sun Bowl.

Not so sure the SEC darling is going to come back in this 1. Not so sure how the country will survive only having 1 SEC team in the final four.

Lowest Yards Per Completion...All Time.

But sometimes, the game just does not translate to the next level. It's not necessarily anyone's fault, it is just that what worked no longer is effective. Everyone knows a great example of this, as he was 1 of the best college football qbs of all time. He was simply not an NFL qb though, as much as some wanted it to be so for various reasons. -
His wife makes great meatballs though. To be fair, he didn't hire himself here. He dazzled and bamboozled them with what they wanted to hear. He was going to be an innovative, program-builder, culture-installing football genius. They ate it up like those fabulous meatballs.

We aren't going to get anything for him unless Jones is stupid again and wants to make another deal for our junk. So he is here. Buyers remorse. What I am a bit puzzled about is that he just needs more time, more reps etc. He's not a 19 or 20 year old youngster. He will be 25 at the end of January.
