Perhaps, but they weren't good enough to overcome the Rams and one very bad call, so seems reasonable that the Patriots would likely have had their number as well. Regarding the Panthers, this thread is about the QB and as the QB goes, so goes the team. That's just the reality of the modern NFL. I don't see it in Bryce to elevate the offense enough to win Super Bowls... Brees had the perfect situation on his side in 2009 and couldn't in any other year either.

Where did I dispute that and, if I had, how does it invalidate the point? I didn't, and it doesn't. Regardless, if this is Bryce's trajectory then it's not going to fly.

I'm going to assume this tweet is lighthearted humor.

Yup, it was the ref that threw the inexplicable interception in overtime and who prevented the Saints from having the lead in the first place at the end of regulation when they kicked two red zone field goals. I get the sentiment overall and it was a particularly egregious call, but no game ever really comes down to a single play. The Saints kicked 3 field goals of 37, 31, and 29 yard field goals while scoring 23 points. Not a good enough margin in the playoffs and it bit them.

I'll continue to die on this hill, but Drew Brees in the back half of his career was the ultimate dink and dunk QB (I hesitate to say game manager, but that's the term commonly used for that), and that's not good enough to win a Super Bowl in today's NFL outside of the perfect conditions that I mentioned. Every SB-winning team has injury fortune and good luck of course, but they also have to create some luck on their own, and NO's lack of downfield threat due to Brees' arm was a reason they were never able to get back over the hump. Not the only reason of course, but a notable one. Other people may be fully happy with being an annual also-ran, and if the stars align then that type of QB may win another Super Bowl sometime soon. I don't see the point in that but while only time will tell where Bryce falls, signs aren't overly positive IMO. If I'm wrong though then everyone wins.

Your last paragraph sums it up. It can happen, sure, but the odds are very slim and it will require a load of talent and perfect injury conditions to even be above zero chance.
-
Yup, the only reason anyone would have concerns about Bryce the player is because they don't like him. It the only logical conclusion. Surely not objective things like his bad footwork, questionable arm strength, outlier physical stature, etc.

I guess we've identified this year's TC MVP.

Sounds an awful lot like what many of us have been saying since day one.

Training Camp for 7/30/2024 (first padded practice!)
KSpan replied to Icege's topic in Carolina Panthers
Who's upset? This really doesn't affect me one way or another in reality, and thinking something is dumb and/or discussing opinions on a discussion board does not equal upset. Funny how y'all assume that things actually bother other people. -

No, 20 yards should not be considered a deep pass. That discussion was had in yesterday's thread. -

And there it is, offense gets whiny when the defense actually plays. -

Exactly. I always get a bit salty as a defensive guy because the defense has to take it easy in these situations. Easy for a guy like Sanders to look tough when the defender isn't going 100% and now we have all the eyeroll-inducing tweets about it. That said, quality placement by Bryce on the highlight throws today. Saw a bit of that last year as well, like that TD against Green Bay... his best throw of last year IMO. -

It's just Madden and nonsensical in general, but Johnson and Thielen being that close in speed (let alone TMJ being a bit faster) is extra nonsensical. So now shoehorning BC in at center, eh? Almost like going into the season without an actual NFL-proven, or at least NFL-experienced, center might have been a decent idea... -
Never even said it was a bad pass, just that it was underthrown. Which it was. And regarding deep balls, the NFL can call it whatever they want but a 20 yard pass doesn't even get into opponent territory after a touchback. That is not 'deep' in any real, game-swaying sense.
-
Nowhere did I say that you said it was impressive, nowhere did I say anything about timing but rather that the throw was NFL table stakes, and yes, I do think nearly every NFL QB could complete that pass in that scenario when the receiver has to wait on it like Johnson did. And it's not 'pinpoint accuracy' unless there was a target on the ground stating that's where he was throwing. It's just downfield catch and yes, I fully acknowledged elsewhere that it's a single rep. I have nothing else to say here. Only time will tell how things actually shake out.
-
The offense was atrocious. Bryce himself sucked badly. Both things can be, and are, true.
-
I'm sorry, but underthrowing a receiver deep like that rep - in a straight line, with no pressure in your face - is not impressive and most any QB better make that throw in this situation. Johnson slowed up noticeably when the ball was in he air and waited on it. We are talking about a practice rep, not something that happened in a game, but if it DID happen in a game like you say there could absolutely still be questions about a QB's arm strength. Regarding Cam, your comment is entirely irrelevant and non-equivalent. No QB is perfect on every throw and it's unrealistic to expect that - I sure don't expect it of Bryce. Since you brought it up though, Cam threw that with a much lower trajectory than Bryce's pass here and Steve was streaking wide open so it could very well have been a 'just don't miss this' decision. I have nothing to back that up and Cam just likely underthrew him, so don't twist my words, but those types of throws are definitely a thing with guys that open. However, there was no question that Cam had a cannon, and there are very valid questions around Bryce's NFL arm strength. Entirely non-equivalent.
-
Not really sure what you're getting at here, as I never said anything about this pass before you asked for nitpicking and I offered a suggestion that could have perhaps increased the odds. I'm pretty low on Bryce in general but this pass is not a reason to be; it was a losing proposition from the start for most anyone.
-
I haven't made that type of comment you're indicating, at least not recently, but any NFL QB can do what he did here - throw a rainbow that a receiver bides his time under. I do agree though that yes, this throw travelled many yards downfield. Would be fantastic to see it in a game in the near future.
-
Yes, that is an actual deep ball. It was also still underthrown/Diontae had to wait on it. That's the thing - every NFL QB can put the ball 55 yards down the field. Hell, a lot of adults can do it. How many can do it accurately and how much effort does it take to do so is the differentiator..

Horn on Thielen in this scenario is an absolute physical mismatch, disadvantage offense, and any QB would have a hard time. Maybe Bryce helps a bit by placing that ball deeper and in a position more to the right where it's right over Thielen's head, effectively turning Thielen into his own screen against Horn, instead of trying to lead him and letting Horn close, but that would be one hell of a hard catch to make. No obvious better option here IMO.
