Suppose CMC is part of the deal for Watson
ForJimmy replied to DaveThePanther2008's topic in Carolina Panthers
Good call! He has quite the dead cap hit the next couple years. I just assumed with him being the highest paid RB that he would be a big contract to move.... Looks like it would only really come in to help in 24 and 25... Definitely leaning on the side of keeping him more now. Hurney has me always worried about our salary cap. -

I think we only add CMC if it lets up keep a Burns or Brown. We can find a lesser version of him and save a ton of money. I’d say we use Rodney Smith and draft another one late. -
I’ve seen Watson hold the ball too long (usually when he has no one open). He is 25 and still is developing and is currently one of the top QBs in the league as is. Imagine how good he can be in a couple more years. The great QBs (Brady, Rodgers, and Brees) also hold the ball, but usually have top lines to protect them which I think is part of your point. I’m hoping you are saying Teddy can be “better” as in better than he was last year and not better than Watson. Watson behind an average line is 1000x better than Teddy behind an All Pro Line.

If the Jets get Watson, then the Texans will draft Wilson at 2. It doesn’t really change anything for us. Whoever gets a QB, another team has to lose that QB which gives them a need.

He is just depth at this point. He can prove me and others wrong in camp and limited action and I’ll be happy. We should approach it like we have no LT though.

Much better than the usual mega contracts to aging veterans. I’m liking what I’m seeing so far. In the past we wouldn’t have even tried for Watson...

What are the chances we try to sign Moton AND a big FA like a Trent Williams? With Moton, Paradis, and Williams we could plug in a couple guards and have a good OL next year... -
I was talking about the concerns of having more talent around him than his competition for similarities.

Yeah similar to Mac Jones, but with a stronger arm.

Teddy and CMC to Denver for their 1st and 3rd. Ship the picks and our next 3 1sts for Watson. Denver gets Teddy with his old OC and CMC, we get Watson, and Houston gets 4 1sts and a 3rd. Plus we ditch Teddy and CMC’s salary. -
All valid points. I do think we are that close though. Even without CMC, how many games would we have won this year with Watson instead of Teddy. KC and GB were both winnable. Say we lose one of the Burns, Brown, Chinn, Jackson, YGM, young talent on defense or CMC and 3 first round picks. Ok that’s a huge price, but if we traded next year’s first and our 1st and 2nd to get the Dolphins number 3 pick and select Wilson or Fields most people would be ok with it. So think of it as one additional first rounder and a young player to upgrade Fields into Watson. Seems like a no brainer to me... The big thing is like you stated the Jets or Dolphins could outbid us....

Huge market definitely...

All true. I’m surprised he would want to go there (coach aside). They have no talent on that roster and losing the capital required to get him would make it tough to field a decent team around him. You are right though. If he wants to be a Jet, and they really want to go all in on him, he will be a Jet.

Eason had one of the better arms in college. I would say you weren’t the only one high on him before he played that year.

ESPN Predicts Watson to be the Panthers starter in 2021

Players also have to buy in for a franchise to be successful. Don’t see that happening if they refuse to trade him... -

Yeah they should stay put. Everything is looking great for them. 4-11 with their top 5 pick belonging to another team, Watt released, and their franchise player unhappy, deep threat a free agent, and a lot of players are going to avoid them. Let’s try it again! -

Well this is a Panthers forum, so yeah I’m not a Texans fan. Look the team isn’t ready to compete right now. They had what 4 wins and now lost JJ and have their QB disgruntled. Trade him and load up and they could have a very quick turnaround with some stability. I wouldn’t be against 3 1sts, CMC, and another player if I was a Houston fan. Especially knowing he doesn’t want to be there.... -
I’m only ok with this if we have Lance or Fields behind him developing.

We have a top 10 pick which makes only the Jets out of the main 3 better. Throw in the fact we are willing to part with CMC and a defensive player, IMO the Jets can’t come close. Not even mentioning the No Trade Claus (the Jets shouldn’t be on any player’s list of preferred destinations). The Niners would have to part with Bosa (which I don’t see happening) to come close. My biggest concern was the Dolphins with their 4 first rounders and Tua, since they appear to be backing out I think we might have the next best package with draft picks and players. -

No I get it. He is arguably the 2nd most valuable player in the league. There is only so much we can offer and still be competitive. I just don’t see the Jets, Niners, or Bears offering anything better. Dolphins were a worry (extra first rounder and higher than ours plus Tua etc....), but it seems like they are staying out with Tua.
