Honestly, this is probably our most promising rookie class through 6 weeks in years. That's not to say they've been incredible or anything, but there have been several regular contributors from the rookie class and we still have Jonathon Brooks to come who could be the best of the bunch. Low bar, yes, but I certainly prefer where this year's rookies are compared to the last several classes.

I have no real issues with Canales so far. He made the correct call to bench Bryce early and the offense has been solid despite working in some young guys at WR and TE and having a past his prime QB in Dalton. The defense is what it is; that's a talent issue and I don't put that on Canales or Evero. If anyone deserves the blame it's Dan Morgan, but even then he made the right call to invest in the offense even if it has cost us on defense in the short-term. I'm certainly not ready to say Canales is THE guy, but I don't think he's a core part of the problem either. He's doing about as well as anyone could reasonably expect given what he has to work with. We'll see how that changes as we move forward.

It really isn't. The defense was great last year. We just have nobody worth a damn on the field between injuries and shitty drafting for the last 5 years.

Well at least we're competing. That's a step up from the Reich era. I like what I see from XL and the OL, especially with the injuries up front. But yeah, the defense is ass cheeks.

The hype said Alabama had the best OL in the country. I call bullshit. This line is trash. Also, hire a Pac 12 coach, get a Pac 12 defense.

Definitely useful for mental reps, but I do wonder if it can be expanded to be used alongside traditional practice reps. For example, the offensive players wear augmented reality VR goggles that show them what the defense is running, they run through the play, then try running it without the goggles and see if they made the correct reads. Or even have an AI-assisted VR app that gives them real time advice during a rep so they can practice making the correct reads/throws in different situations. The technology is probably a ways off from that kind of detail, but it's worth looking into, IMO.

What's the deal with Taylor Moton? Is he out for an extended period?

I've been wondering if NFL teams would start taking advantage of this technology. I feel like it's something that can absolutely help players in practice with the mental aspects of the game in ways typical reps can't.

This. It's why the Greg Olsen trade was one of the best in franchise history. Having said that, TE is also not a position you generally see players come right out of college and perform at a high level at. Even guys like Kelce, Kittle, Goedert, etc. took time to become impact players.

Well yes, we definitely had both a coaching and culture problem. But that doesn't mean Darnold would ever have worked out here. He never did a thing with the Jets either; if anything helped him turn it around it was spending a year as a backup in San Francisco and then going to another QB whisperer in Kevin O'Connell. The passing game under Wilks was barely functional and was only that because our running game was balling out at the time. Having said that, I don't think this lasts for Darnold. I think he may play better than his first few years in the league from this point forward, but I think much of what we're seeing this year is scheme smoke and mirrors.As for Baker... well, you've got a better argument here. Still, he had previously shown plenty of flashes in Cleveland (won a playoff game) and needed a career reset. He may well have worked out with a better coaching staff here, but there were no indications of that at the time.

It's not ideal, no. But I still think the primary reasons for his failure have been that all the things he was supposed to be great at just haven't translated to the NFL in any way. When you're not spotting obvious corner blitzes and making simple adjustments to protection you've got problems well beyond a few inches of height.

We shouldn't consider a trade unless we get a REALLY good offer; like a 1st rounder. Even then I wouldn't consider that unless Diontae has communicated to us that he doesn't plan to re-sign here. Based on his play so far he's more valuable than a 1st rounder we'd likely use to take a flyer on another receiver to replace him. People are assuming he doesn't want to be here, but we don't know that at all. The only thing we do know is he wants to be paid; I imagine if we offer him a contract he's happy with any reservations he may (or may not) have will pretty quickly disappear.

We could literally sign a UDFA off any practice squad in the league and get better results. At least they'd put in some effort.

If we're going for a developmental guy I like Milroe just based on physical traits alone, but he's very raw as a passer. Allar is kind of the same thing, but a little more developed as a pure passer and less of a run threat. I like Nussimeier, but I feel like he sneaks into the 1st round. He strikes me as the best fit of the three you mentioned for what Canales seems to want to run on offense.

Oh absolutely. I'm talking about QB in the 1st round. If we don't go QB early we absolutely should be drafting a developmental guy in the middle rounds.

Hate to see that particular injury. Could very well be career-ending. At the very least he's likely played his last down for the Panthers.

Depending on how well Dalton continues to play the rest of the season I think it's entirely possible we pass on a QB and just re-sign Andy and build the team up for another year or two before going QB. Obviously much depends on where we end up picking. If we're picking top-5 we probably have to go QB; if it's 6-12 range it'll depend if one drops; below that we're probably better off just going WR/DE and either giving the 2nd round QBs a look or passing altogether. Having said that, my current QB rankings are: 1. Cam Ward 2. Shedeur Sanders 3. Garrett Nussmeier 4. Carson Beck 5. Quinn Ewers 6. Jalen Milroe

Sadly, I have to agree. I was as big a Bryce supporter as anyone, but there isn't any real doubt left at this point. I will say, though, I don't think the issue is Bryce's arm strength or even his size as much as it is that the things that were supposed to be his biggest strengths (running the offense, reading defenses, processing, accuracy) have ended up not translating at all. Had those things actually translated to the NFL, I don't think his size or arm strength would have prevented him from being a franchise QB. Unfortunately, they seemingly have not translated at all.
