Albright: Panthers circling on Pickett
Krovvy replied to electro's horse's topic in Carolina Panthers
Yeah, I forgot. It was Hurney who made the call to give Matt Rhule a 7 year contract, and also absolute player personel control. Some big brain takes at the huddle as usual. -

LMFAO! You know general managers often laude second round picks as "first round talent". This is so disengeous that I feel like I'm talking politics with Tim Pool. -

You chanage your predictions often. Here's what you said in your draft day thread It's okay. You throw a lot on the wall to see what sticks. I get it. Even on draft day there's a plethora of predictions. -

I'm still waiting for a source on that too. You guys will be blaming Hurney a decade from now. Meanwhile we're in a death spiral as a franchise. -

I knew I should have screenshotted your draft day thread. Shifty text, huh? -

I'm sorry, but I don't see where a first rounder was on the line, or where he tried to move up in the first. What we have is one quote that says he talked to the Rams. It never made sense. Especially considering we dumped him after one season, and used the most expensive draft capital we've ever had to take a quarterback (that many thought was a huge risk) the following year. -

Okay, so the trade would amount to trading up half of the second round. That is, if the rumor is accurate. Some would say that's an okay gamble for a team without a quarterback. Especially considering most of this fanbase was okay with trading a second, fourth, and sixth for Darnold, and then argued it's fine we're taking his fifth year option. So, the rumor of Hurney trying to trade next year's first to move back into the first in 2010 has been debunked. I know it's a huddle favorite, but it never made sense, and never had any sourced backing. -
Trade Down or Trade Away Player(s)
Krovvy replied to DaveThePanther2008's topic in Carolina Panthers
I think trading Christian would be the 'quarterback in next years draft' move. Even if we're horrible next year we might have to leap frog a few teams to draft a quarterback. If that's the case we need more picks somehow, even if they're mid rounders. If we keep him it would be for a quarterback we've taken this year. -
Trade Down or Trade Away Player(s)

Trade away Christian. We should have done it years ago. He's always been a luxury player. The ever growing cap will be fine, since we're rebuilding. We don't even have a quarterback. -
He has an arm, but it's all over the place.

Yes, this article is the one someone posted years ago to prove how wrong everyone was. The Rams had the first overall pick in the draft, and the first of the second round. The rumor was we wanted to trade up into the first round to draft Clausen. Not that we were going to trade up a few spots in the second round to jump teams. Trading up a few spots for a quarterback in the second isn't a crazy idea, especially when Carolina didn't have one. You have to remember that Pickles was highly touted by a lot of the media at the time. Even after his atrocious rookie season we had analysts on the draft night talking about how the Panthers should stick with Clausen. The rumor was specifically about trading into the first round. Which would have been a bad move. -

Yeah, that rumor has been on the forum for 10 years, and still makes no sense, and has zero sources outside of this forum. I still don't believe it. We stayed pat, we traded with no one, and Jimmy was there. We then dumped him after one season. -

I mean, okay. We were all here last year. The last prediction I recall from Verge was Waddle, then maybe Horn or the other big corner. It was pretty off considering how many other experts got it right. -

Take a shot. This team isn't going to really improve next year without a quarterback anyway. I'm fine with anything as long as Rhule is fired. -

I mean they do, but a lot of draft predictors had Horn penned for quite a long time. On the other hand the ones with insider knowledge on the board were throwing anything at the wall to see what stuck, and still missed. -
Yeah, he scrambles really well, and can throw on the run really well. BUT, he doesn't climb the pocket, and often abandons it too early when he has good protection.
-
Nope. You become the Jets by consistently missing. You have to keep taking shots. If you sell yourself on a guy just because you took him in the first round you can stagnate like New York, or Denver. You have to keep trying year after year until you find one. You can use the Cardinals as an example, or you can use the Panthers with Clausen and Cam in back to back years.

Yeah, Corral has some great traits. I want to see Willis, Howell, and Corral at the combine. If they can show they can sling it (which all three should). -

Yep, pretty much. I would feel better about him if he could show an ability to climb the pocket and make throws standing tall. Right now, besides his arm strength, that's really the most glaring problem he has. He can throw great on the run, but he gets jumpy and abandons the pocket too early. -

Yeah, but they were completely different things. I called out how awful the Darnold trade was at the time, and did so with the Teddy signing as well. I'm just saying I can see why some scouts have him as the number one quarterback this year. I can also see why he'll be a failure in the NFL, and was very open about it the last few weeks. -
This is assuming that Matt Rhule is fired and Steve Wilks steps up. Also, to clarify I have Sam Howell and maybe Willis above Pickett as they're more of what I look for in a franchise quarterback. However, I guess I could see a scenario where Pickett comes in and can perform in the NFL, but it's not something I would really bet on.
-
I also wouldn't be mad if the Panthers didn't draft a quarterback, fired Matt Rhule week 4, acquired draft capital, and made Steve Wilks the interim head coach. There's some great quarterbacks next year coming out. I just have a bad feeling though that we'll make some crazy December run to put us out of contention.
-
A week ago I would 100% said Nay, but I ended up putting Yay. If for any reason just because I believe the Panthers should take a shot. If he plays poorly, or even mediocre, take another shot next year. Willis, Corral are also options — much more athletically gifted options. I've already stated I think Rhule is going to take a quarterback, as I think it's the only way he can save his job. If he hits on a quarterback it'll be very difficult to fire him. Whatever the Panthers do they need to make sure not to oversell themselves on the pick. That's how you end up with the next Blake Bortles.
-
I feel like the Panthers should take a shot at quarterback every year until they find one. I just wish Matt Rhule wasn't the one taking the shot. I've watched a ton of Pickett's games at this point, and I can see he has some good qualities. I don't know if it's enough though. I might be selling myself on this kid just because it feels inevitable, which is crazy to say when we're this far out from the draft. I don't know.
