Trading for Sean Payton vs Settling for Steve Wilks
Waldo replied to Sean Payton's Vicodin's topic in Carolina Panthers

Wilks is a good guy but is limited as a HC or even DC. Could be worse but I have trouble believing he will do enough to stay more than a year anywhere. He did a great job as an interim coach and honestly that is his best fit to his ability and style.

Go on record now before the hire is made Re: Sean Payton
Waldo replied to GOAT's topic in Carolina Panthers
Have to cheer against him and wish noting good for him or his. Hate him as a person and love how lazy his coaching got before he helped run the Saints into the ground before retiring. Fanhood? IDK but there would be zero hope for the team from me going forward as long as Tepper and his residue are here so I'm guessing it would cure my Panther addiction. Meh, whatever. The NFL is just teams that are toys for their owners designed around a game of football that produce profit hand over fist. It's getting hard for me to see it for the game anymore anyways. I'm still hoping we hire Steichen but after the Watson scare this is another huge 'let it burn for fun' kind of move to me. -
Roman Harper thinks Sean Payton could be our next HC now

Sorry, it sounded like the 'he's basically a rookie' BS when I read it. -
Roman Harper thinks Sean Payton could be our next HC now
Waldo replied to ncfan's topic in Carolina Panthers
BS. He is a non-gimp GM for the first time (maybe?). He has been a gimp GM for 2 years. I hope he can do well now in the new role but he signed up to be Rhule's gimp. Now is his chance to prove he is more but he did the dirty deeds the job required that he knowingly took over the last 2 years. -

I don't think there are any real issues at the coching level pay wise. Owners running a reduculously profitable business with crap products on the field is an issue for over half the league. No way to fix that unfortunately.

It's so hard to get a quality candidate for a HC on the hot seat and no way he doesn't at least appear to be on the hot seat already. I'm not sure and don't know enough about Lafleur. Could work, the QB is there so all they really need is decent coaching.

People act like Owners are paying their staff out of pocket. It's a business, they pay the coaches from the income they make. And they won't pay more then would effect the amount of profit they want to make. It's why JR was so cheap, he wanted to pocket as much as possible (or his ownership group did). I don't know what the 'limit' would be because I have never seen actual finances from an NFL team but I have a hard time believing they would allow it to eat into a set profit amount. These guys don't get into the NFL to win, they get into the NFL to get wealthier. Coaches' pay does not effect the cap but it does go into the P & L so there is a limit each ownership is willing to pay. My guess is that profit rules supreme and the coaches are making a lot less then ownership regardless of quality. It does effect the fans because ownership will make decisions based on profit first, not winning. Great example is Tepper and his turf. The effect isn't always that obvious to us outsiders as that example.

It will be a cake walk either way. Now if we are the ones doing the walking or getting walked is way up in the air lol

Blame the OC and showcase what your very good QB will do with a new one to save the day. I would guess he is fired next year and they waste most of that rookie contract on dud coaching but there is always the chance he can bring in a good enough OC to save his job but I wouldn't bet on it personally.

Bowels ain't it but neither was Leftwich. He looked terrible this year and his unit also look terrible most of the year. NFCS looking like a cakewalk again next year.

1/17 Athletic/Brugler Mock: Panthers Trade Up
Waldo replied to Bear Hands's topic in Carolina Panthers
It is for the 49ers after blowing their load on Lance. I don't have a problem with this trade personally. I even like the HB in the 2nd. But I don't think we get a shot at Stroud without going much more than this offer. I would rather trade Burns for a pick to take a QB and take a DE at 9 personally but not my call. -
But defensive coaches make you feel good about not being winners. It's like moral victories and playoff appearances are not valued as much as playoff wins. (Hint Sarcasm) Until a lot changes in the NFL don't expect this 'fad' to go away. Good offensive coaches are like QBs, in high demand and not enough. If you hire a deffensive coach you are just training other team's new HC with your OC or you have a dud. McD is a great coach but he is going to have his hands full keeping his offensive staff stocked. It will be interesting to see how long and how well he can keep it up.

Hell I was interested in seeing what he could do at the beginning of this year as a potential candidate and he fell flat on his face...hard. It was a massively disappointing year for him and he is going to have to prove now he should get another shot. His game plans are called stale with lots of running and screens. Sounds like he is about to go work for Ron (it's that bad). Not sure anyone has mentioned him the second half of the season.
-
Not at all. Leftwich did not help himself this year at all and should take a step back to QB coach somewhere good like Brady if he wants a future try at OC again. It was a really bad year for his career.

Panthers receive permission to interview Sean Payton

I keep hoping for a slight improvement and then he thinks about trading a 1st for Payton. It's like he just wants to epically fug up and be like -

Can't forget or forgive that and more. I hope we hire Johnson before that meeting on Friday. Tepper keeps dancing with doing something unforgivable. -
I personally think it's a great idea for the interviewers to talk to mostly everyone. Networking and picking up anything that a candidate might say of value even if they are not a great fit now could be a good thing long-term. We could be looking for another coach in 2 years or 10 years so seeing who is who and what they do is a huge bonus. It sounds, just a guess, that we are vetting interviewed coaches options to qualify them. Some theories on having made a decision already but it looks like seeing what the more complete staff would look like vs hiring a new HC and then say 'what now'. Looks like they may have learned something from the failed process last time.

If the team left the state it would be dead in my eyes. I love the team but there are players, coaches and owners I won't do anything but cheer against regardless if they are employed here. Watson was one for me. Payton is another. Tepper has been not good but he hasn't hit Jerry Jones level yet. Guys like Wilks or Caldwell would probably cool me off and check me out for a while, no interest in watching much more known mediocrity. Not dead, just disengaged to protect my mental health.

Vic Fangio, Brian Daboll and a new approach to staff building

Which goes with the old ways we have seen around here that I desperately want to leave in the past. Add in player management too. -

I always thought coaching staffs filled out with only guys they had worked with before was a poor approach that led to stagnation. A HC shuld be able to know how to interview and know when they should hire outside of their coaching tree and current staff.
