Justin Fields: Closer Look/Why I think he could be the guy
mav1234 replied to davos's topic in Carolina Panthers
I love Fields. I actually think that he often rises to the competition, rather than shrinking from it. I would be okay with nabbing him with a trade up to 3. Would prefer Watson, but I can imagine how that might not work out...- 58 replies

Richard Sherman thinks Mac Jones criticized unfairly
mav1234 replied to panthers55's topic in Carolina Panthers
Given he is widely anticipated to go some place later in the first or shortly thereafter, I don't think he is being unfairly criticized. When people talk about his arm strength and athleticism they are in reference to what you want out of a top pick, which is usually elite levels. -
I don't hate on him for playing on Alabama. I also don't trust my own judgments as much as I do scouting reports on him... which all point out meh athleticism and average arm strength (but actually highlight strengths I think our offense could utilize quite well). I just don't want him with #8 from what I've seen and read.
-
So when you let a QB set his feet and throw in a clean pocket, even those with average arm strength can get the ball 40 yards down the field. That is why Bridgewater had numerous 30+ yard completions, including one that went 48 yards in the air and frankly was thrown fine overall (it was probably his BEST throw all year even if his receiver had to slow a bit - 48 yards will do that, lol). Is Jones' arm better than Teddy's? Maybe? It doesn't seem remarkably so. Scouting reports indicate that is his weakness, that his arm is average and it certainly seems so. These things are hard to compare. Certainly he could succeed as an NFL QB, as we've heard various arm strengths can succeed, but I don't think he has the arm strength of the elites, even if he does have 4-5 nice deep throws over the 2.5 hours of clips...
-
Yeah I could see him a Panther... if he's there in a later round.
-
This does remind me of some of Bridgewater's deeper passes.... like this one, where Moore has to slow down: That ball travelled >45 yards in the air too... but tbf that may be his nicest deep pass all season lol.
-
I don't want to spend a first round pick on a QB with average arm strength. His lack of athleticism is also somewhat concerning. A lot of people bring up Brady, but Brady is otherworldly in other ways... Eh, if Rhule thinks he is worth it I'll be happy with him.
-
Jones doesn't really seem to have great arm strength... he could work in our offense but many of the comments we've heard is a desire to have a QB that can make all the throws...
-
I'm withholding judgment on the comments about tepper wanting a QB at any cost until we see what actually comes of that.
-
His stance was that the coach wasn't going to change his mind... and it didn't. Meeting with the coach isn't caving, lol. In fact it demonstrates that he's doing this right and showing the Texans he is serious. They're not going to convince him to stay with their coach hire. There have been no reports that Watson is willing to play with the Texans under any circumstances. So it is the same as it has been. While Houston hasn't made a trade yet, there's still lots of time for them to do so. Or, I suppose, for Watson to change his mind - but that, to me, seems less likely given his current stance.
-
You ignore or dismiss media reports that disagree with your stance. Watson's stance hasn't changed. He doesn't want to play for the Texans next year...
-
It is only illogical if you feel passionately that the only resolution to this situation is not trading Watson. There's a range of possibilities, and one certainly is trading him for a ton of picks, so they can actually get people that want to be there.
-
Its just as logical that the Texans have realized Watson isn't going to budge and would rather get a kings bounty for their new management team to build with. We won't know which is true until the draft, imo.
-
Teddy isn't honestly expensive as a QB goes, but I think you are probably right given their cap.
-
And no one is forcing the Texans to keep him, either. Contracts don't mean poo in sports. Teams drop players all the time. Trade players. Cut them. Etc... I don't really care that he has a contract; he doesn't want to be there, and it is to their benefit to find a way to handle that. Plus the situation has changed in strange directions since then.
-
if this was any team other than the Saints... I could find a way for them to make it happen, lol. Also, they need a new QB one way or another, so..
-
yeah, this isn't just a player waking up one morning and deciding he regrets his contract and wants to go elsewhere. there is a lot more to this situation than that. imo this isn't really a precedent-setting situation unless Houston's owner makes it so. Trying to force a superstar to play for a team he refuses to will create a much bigger situation than if they just trade a huge fuging bounty for him and come out with a whole new set of options to build their team for the future. We're talking about a team that is entering a full rebuild with a new coach and new GM... it isn't surprising that the franchise players want a chance to chase their dreams elsewhere.
-
there's no disservice here and this isn't a precedent. players have asked for trades and gotten them before. hell this isn't even the first player THIS YEAR to say he doesn't want to play for the Texans anymore. there's no reason for Houston to torpedo its new GM and new HC just to try to force a millionaire to play when he refuses to, not when they could gain huge capital from any of a number of teams for shipping him off. its just funny given how Watt was treated...

Panthers will "pay any price" for Watson (via Sportsnaut via PFN)
mav1234 replied to top dawg's topic in Carolina Panthers
Neither Darnold nor Tua have shown enough to warrant much in this particular trade. Qbs on rookie contracts are attractive... when they look like players you expect to build around ... but are either of those two that kind of player right now? If you want to replace your franchise QB as a new coach, you're after picks those teams have to get your guy... Either of those guys certainly could still develop, and while more attractive than Bridgwater, for a team likely to draft a QB this year, they aren't worth a ton more lol... they aren't exactly players you start so the QB you just drafted can learn behind them. They would essentially become assets you acquire to immediately trade. The Dolphins actually have quite a few solid players, but in terms of young players still on rookie deals, they have fewer assets than we do there. They are also on the cusp of making a run at the division so if Houston is set on players in addition to draft picks, that could be a stumbling point. Are they really going to give up e.g. Howard and another asset along with 3 first rounders? Maybe! But do you want a CB to be the headliner on a trade like that? The Jets have far, far less talent than we do, period. But their draft position is consistently valuable in a trade, heh. If they gut what they have they can offer a few nice pieces. Both teams certainly have more to offer in this year's draft, so it depends on how much Houston is valuing players etc, as well as the balance of future picks. I don't think there is certainty that if Watson is traded he's a Panther, but I think we are competitive in that mix because of our young talent on rookie deals and potential star power to pair with it. E.g. I wouldn't be surprised to see CMC and Burns dealt with a bunch of picks. -
I believe the new GM and coach will talk some sense into the owner before the draft, but it'll go right up to it before we see movement there.

The Texans want both players and picks and neither of the young QBs on the teams you mention are particularly valuable in this trade. The Panthers have superior assets outside of picks. I wouldn't be surprised if one of those teams comes out on top but I don't think it is hard to imagine how players like Burns, Chinn, CMC and DJ could be attractive as an include or two with multiple 1st rounders and 2nds etc. -
The Texans are going to lessen his trade value if they refuse to entertain offers until he starts sitting out actual activities. You can't try to force someone like this to play ... even if they call his bluff it'll be terrible for the new coach. Better to build with a bounty of draft picks and good young players.
