I think we had 3 pass attempts over 20 yards. 1 completion. Need to do better for sure.

Maybe with a week of practice PJ can surprise me. Ugh.

Anderson on the Hands Team for the On-Side Kick!

If we think about a 1k yard receiver... That averages out to like 63 yards per game, right? In his first 7 games he passed that threshold 6 times and only three times in his next nine... His last 9 games look a lot like his yards with the Jets, but much higher usage. -

Robby before and with Sam in NYJ was the same dude. Now maybe the argument can be made that the QBs before Sam were also terrible. But still, Robby outside of with Teddy has been... Well, he wasn't the most reliable but he didn't drop tons of passes either. Last year, he really had some great games especially early. He and Teddy seemed to click. Not all of our incompletions are on the receivers for sure. But many drops have just been ridiculous. -

I actually think teams adjusted to him mid season but I'd need to check the numbers to be sure. It felt like his effectiveness declined after the mid point of the year. -

It wasn't great but it was essentially the same pre and with Darnold. You can't really look at these 4 and tell me you can pick out which 2 are Darnold: 55.3%, 54.2%, 53.8%, 53.4% ... And no the first two aren't without Sam and last two with... His usage with Teddy was also hugely different than with the Jets... His average yards per reception were 4 yards lower than at any point with the Jets (which were the same pre and with Sam). -

He never had issues like this with New York and Sam Darnold. Yes, he had one better season pre-Sam, but he had the same catch % and no appreciable difference in drops. Sam isn't really different than he was in new York (unfortunately lol) I don't know if we've seen evidence he's better with PJ. Guess we will get a chance... -
Darnold Concussed, Patriots Game Next Week, Sign Cam,
mav1234 replied to Kryptick's topic in Carolina Panthers
I watched a lot of Cam last year. He was terrible in a stretch after COVID, but not bad (better than Darnold for sure) before and after. On top of that he is still an effective running threat, moreso than Darnold. Buuut... He's not coming back. Even if the coaches wanted him I'm not sure he'd want to be here. -
So this was or wasn’t a hospital ball by Darnold?
mav1234 replied to TheBigKat's topic in Carolina Panthers
You're right about the hot takes. Which ones are right or not seems a matter of confirmation bias around here though, hehe. This entire hospital ball thing started because of him, didn't it? (Edit: for Darnold, not in general) -
You may not realize this, but GameDay threads are for overreactions, lol. As I said later, maybe they are elite with more pieces healthy and we will see that soon. Here's the thing: our offense is bad. Period. Defense is not. But if you want to talk about the Cowboys game, we have to acknowledge the D gave up 14 points before Darnold unraveled. It's disingenuous to act like *Darnolds second half interceptions* caused the defense to falter in that game... It was the defense breaking open that happened first. That's ok tho. We can acknowledge Darnold sucks with acknowledging the reality the defense caved before he did. Doesn't mean that one game will define them over the season, but my impression (and this has been without Shaq and Gilmore and imo they were huge yesterday) is the defense comes up soft in big moments from multiple games. I am happy I was wrong yesterday! As to yesterday, Darnold did play better than his stat line... Better doesn't mean he would be adequate against better teams.

Darnold Concussed, Patriots Game Next Week, Sign Cam,

Are you bragging about being the king of poo? -
Honestly, Abdullah looks like he can actually spell CMC on all 3 downs, too. I love Chubba but for now he's a 2 down back... A good runner, but he's not there yet at catching the ball. That's okay tho, he's done well for a 4th rounder imo.

Darnold Concussed, Patriots Game Next Week, Sign Cam,
mav1234 replied to Kryptick's topic in Carolina Panthers
Okay sure he possibly could be except you're forgetting the one most important question Did he play for temple or Baylor? In all seriousness, if Darnold is going to miss time I hope they give him some looks in practice. PJ looks to make worse decisions than Darnold and that's saying something. -
I hope Ridley gets whatever help he needs, too. Even before this season I was happy with DJ over him... Gilmore was great in his first game for us overall. Just picking up where he left off as an all pro, lol. Ifhe plays at this level all year I kinda doubt we can keep him, but we will see.

If Darnold is out multiple weeks what’s our options (Don’t say Cam)
mav1234 replied to TheBigKat's topic in Carolina Panthers
Prior to Moore's own concussion, he had some nice games for us. Really hoped he'd be our next Jake. But man 2010 ruined him too. -
The good news is we did have some nice 3rd down conversions today, but we still left some plays on the field. Play action was looking good on occasion too.
-
Honestly the middle was such a problem on passing downs I can't tell you where the fault lies. But in run blocking ... They looked surprisingly good. And we know how CMC can turn losses into gains with no run blocking, so... I wonder how much time Sam will miss Edit: and Shaq had a hell of a game. Damn was he missed. He was everywhere. Gilmore looks good still... Really promising there.
-
Edit: nm I agree our line is an issue but man... Well let's jsut see. Gonna try to stay positive for a few days.
-
Yeah. Very different game the way the D was playing with a TD there, too. The drops are maddening. Tbh, DJ was also having issues with drops last year. Nothing like he is this year (7 drops last year, already 5 this year, not counting today)... He was damn good his first couple years there, which makes me wonder if it's a coaching thing. And ofc he is far from our biggest problem there, but it seems an issue across all our guys.
-
We already know he isn't, tho. But we can still feel for the dude that played that hard and left the game with an injury. I get this is a forum so we will all always share our opinions, but I guess part of me wishes that we didn't need to have a "but he's still trash" Convo in every thread related to him... At least about his injury. But I get it.
-
I think Sam had a significantly better day than his numbers indicate. He used his legs well and had some nice throws (some of which were dropped)... We do need to try to keep from forcing him to play from behind while we are one dimensional, but I think this game kinda echoed what we saw earlier in the season: with a run game we can at least limit his mistakes. next question is if we can do this against better teams.
-
I thought he looked good overall and I bet he can develop a bit in the pass catching game long term. Definitely thought Abdullah looked good tho and was very good as a 3rd down back.
-
We do need the running game involved, even if Cmc isn't the one running the ball. Darnold isn't good enough to carry a passing attack and gets little help from his receivers. Question will be if we can run effectively against the Bucs etc.
-
By the time Darnold threw a pick in the 2nd half vs Dallas, our D had given up 14 points. Yes, 7 of those came on a short field after a missed fg, but that isn't the same thing as blaming a Darnold implosion for it... The D gave up 14 points vs the Cowboys while we had the lead to start the 3rd quarter. Darnold's interceptions were crippling because they meant we couldn't claw back into it until late. But just wanted a correction. The D folded before Darnold did vs Dallas. The D is still FAR ahead of the offense.
-
I just have a hard time seeing it as a possibility with this offense, even with CMC. But you never know... Darnold played significantly better than his stats indicate... If he avoids being out long with an injury... Or if we can pick up a competent vet.... Maybe.
