They can be and are. That's basically all a bunch of us are saying. The offense is playing bad and there's lots of reasons they can all be true, all interact simultaneously

I don't honestly care about his salary. We will have a lot of cap room next year. Darnold was a mistake but I also understand the logic. Plus, not really being sure on Stafford myself didn't matter since he correctly saw LAR as more of a competitor than we were. I just wanted a long term solution at QB.
-
I meant cost in draft picks rather than salary. It was less about him specifically and more thinking we would be needing several years to really be competitive... and by then his window would be closing. It's why I wanted someone younger... (Watson pre allegations, or Fields lol)... I didn't think we would be as far along on D as we are now.

Unfortunately top 3 is not hard to make given the distance between 2 and everyone else. I mean, Beuerlein had one incredible season with us, so there's that. Lol.
-
I was a little worried about Stafford's price tag given his age and my perception of when we could compete... But the people that didn't think he was very good? Yeaaah... As to Rivers, I'd take him in a heart beat for the rest of the year if that's what he wanted.

I agree completely... The offense is just playing poorly... and tbh, some of these problems predate our losing streak... Its as if the people blaming "hospital balls" for the WR play just ignored everything being said about our WR group's hands in preseason. this has been a persistent problem, and I think it points at something far outside whether the WRs like Darnold or not. nor is this excusing Darnold being bad, lol, but we can also acknowledge that a group that was supposed to be one of our strengths is not turning out that way. last year DJ had the same number of drops he'd had in his first two years combined. there's something off with coaching / preparation imo (this is not me blaming Brady, as I have no clue what is going on there).

Erving's "effort" on the play that got Sam hurt
mav1234 replied to trueblade's topic in Carolina Panthers
I agree he isn't a dominant runner, but the hit that actually knocked him out of the game was basically a blown block and not the guy in front of him. In this case, he was trying to get the first down and I respect that effort. In general, Darnold slides and doesn't take unnecessary hits - many of his runs have ended that way. Obviously we all wish he hadn't taken this hit (perhaps save for the one poster I usually respect that felt the need to call him expendable in a thread about his injury... heh). -

People used to poo talk Cam all the time for not sliding, too. Cam eventually got better at that aspect of things but I never saw him give up before a first down marker. -
Advanced Passing Stats Through 8 Games(2020 vs. 2021)

Eh, that's not true. Teddy had plenty of defenders and supporters midway thru the season that complained about our OL and red zone playcalling. After his first few weeks we also had lots of threads about finally finding our QB etc... A few posters were upset at his arm strength and a couple of is didn't think he was clutch enough to win games when the pressure was on, but he looked good early. -

Honestly my problem with Teddy was different from most posters here but I think him speaking out against the staff at points is what did him in. As to the OL, Erving is probably better than Christensen now but long term we know he isn't the answer so I wish this staff would let their tackle they'd drafted play... He was hit or miss tbh but the OL as a whole is also better than when he last played. Just seems that we are stuck in a weird place with personnel on offense. -

I must have missed it but who actually called Darnold expendable after the injury? That's some shitty stuff to say. -

I think all of us are prone to comparing our QBs to Cam, but really he was something else in so many ways. Allen had fire... I personally think Darnold has gotten animated too. I think the difference between those guys and Cam is that we didn't see them being dejected at tough times etc. But I don't think that is indicative of not caring about winning... Just a different demeanor. And plus by all accounts Darnold is a leader in the locker room. I don't think people are just paying him lip service, either. Unfortunately for his, his issues on the field mean it doesn't much matter how nice a locker room presence he is (although perhaps that portends a future role as a veteran backup for some young QB we draft...). -

Cam also matured while in the league with regards to losses in general. I didn't love the lack of maturity he showed at times, but he was a very young man at the time, and it is better than the alternative of not caring... That said, can you explain the second sentence? Darnold may not be as emotional as Cam but he certainly seems to get fired up, and I have no evidence he doesn't care about winning... It "feels" like Darnold shows more fire than Teddy did but that may not be accurate either (just in terms of getting excited after big plays etc) -

YPC may not be that different, but what is total yardage like? Although maybe part of my memory is influenced by the handful of long runs Darnold has had nowthat have been called back (been at least 2). One positive is that Darnold doesn't seem to have the allergy for the end zone Teddy had here. Weirdly, he doesnt' have it in Denver (not that he is prolific there in scoring TDs, but better than here!) edit: Pressure % being the same is interesting. Can you see his time in the pocket between those first games and the overall? Does feel like he isn't getting the ball out as fast but that can just be perception and not reality -

Chuba's comments are exactly why I do not believe the problems with drops is players "checking out" of the offense because of Darnold (and it would have started in training camp). Darnold is part of our problem, I'm sure DJ and Robby agree, but I don't think they're sitting on the sidelines deciding not to give effort... -

Yeah,CMC around for a larger percentage of plays this year than all of last. But it's still surprising lol -

The two are related imo. At the start of the year, Darnolds bad throw percentage was much lower I think. I think it was something like 15% thru his first 4 games. But the pressure built, defenses learned how to cover our guys (I mean we had teams in back to back weeks commenting they knew our damn routes), Darnold became Bad Sam again, and yeah. One thing to note is Darnold is significantly more productive on the ground than Teddy was. In fact, if we are going to grow at all as an offense it'll be more smart usage of his legs IMO. Interesting our yards/comp is higher this year despite Darnold... I didn't expect that. Barely (8.2 vs 8.7) but still. -

I'm actually surprised our yac/comp is higher this year. Didn't expect that because I thought Teddy has been doing a better job of getting the ball to receivers in places they could make plays than Sam has been. 7.6% is an atrocious drop percentage, but even worse is how many of those are from Chubba and Robby -
Several of Sams red zone runs have been called runs I think... Or at least option plays. I'd have to go back and look but I'm pretty sure several of his TDs were.

Overall he played well I thought, but I didn't notice his effort here... I'm not sure he has the speed to get in front of Darnold either way but man is that a bad look on a play the QB gets injured -
Is this the best panthers secondary ever?
mav1234 replied to micnificent28's topic in Carolina Panthers
Well kind of, but saying some unit on the team is the best or not the best because it's ranking with any one or set of numbers / indices is a bit subjective... I think because this is a team sport, the missing context matters a lot in going from best ranking in a given year to best all time for a given team. Objective to say 2015 had a better DVOA? 100%, yes. I get this may seem nitpicky but it's something I see done at times so just wanted to comment. DVOA is certainly better than just like passing yards and things given rule changes, lol. I just don't think this is actually a decision that can be made purely off defensive stats.
