Chris Long: Bryce Young Went Toe To Toe With Patrick Mahomes
mav1234 replied to Icege's topic in Carolina Panthers
I do think it's best not to get excited - as you highlight, we've seen great games here and there from otherwise mediocre QBs. But, it's also important to remember the context. That was one of CMC's many combined 100+ yard games for us (close to 150 with 2 total TDs if I recall). While a lot of us acknowledge TB was a decent veteran but not the answer, the point was he WAS a veteran and by the end of that season we knew his ceiling. The hope with Bryce is he continues to grow. Worth taking a look at how different the passing charts are, too... All but 8 throws basically within 5 yards of the LoS. 8 throws beyond 10 yards, and with 49 attempts! vs Only 4 of BY's throws were behind the LoS, Nearly half his passes were beyond 10 yards. Just a very different depth of target selection. Bryce was threatening all over the field. Fwiw, Bryce's TD % this year is pretty close to Teddy's that year - but that's including the two terrible games he started. Over the last 4 games, he's above it, so let's see if he can keep that up.- 113 replies

Chris Long: Bryce Young Went Toe To Toe With Patrick Mahomes

I think a big difference between players and fans is that we're most impressed by those crazy passes that seem thrown like missiles for 30 yards down the field. BY can't really do that... Instead, he throws with anticipation, where he's throwing the ball before a receiver is anywhere near where the route finishes (this alone isn't that uncommon). But when and how he does that is really impressive I think, and what a lot of former players are commenting on. With that kind of passing you have to be decisive, which he finally has been the last few games. -
I would have loved to get more from Diontae but it was clear he was done here.
-
A big reason a lot of former players are so impressed by his throws is the anticipation under pressure. That's not always the easiest to see for fans watching the games. But also, fans are mostly fixated on what he doesn't do and his numbers. A lot of us do admit it was a great game, just aren't sold on him overall yet. I still firmly believe Cam has made us all judge young QBs a little differently...

Didn't expect that so soon. I feel like we'd heard he was still a bit soft spoken to his teammates. Good for him.

I'm still rooting for Baby GOAT Kyle Allen Edit: in all seriousness I may have been the last Matt Moore Stan on this board... I remember when we had some friend/relative/whatever of his constantly posting about him lol
-
His best chance at a huge contract next year was being fed the ball on this team. But maybe he's chasing a ring, in which case he has a shot with the Ravens...

I'm all about celebrating Wilks' accomplishments, but a team he used to be a coordinator for suffering is not what I'd call an accomplishment.

I think a lot of people that are saying stuff like "JAG" and "typical game" or something really are not watching the actual plays or understanding the tempo of the game. IT IS JUST ONE GAME. So I'm not sold on him yet. But it was a very good one. We put the game squarely on his shoulders. He stood in the pocket, got leveled while delivering balls 15-20 yards down field. This wasn't just a typical NFL QB game and it was well above JAG level. I strongly suggest folks watch some of the throw breakdowns that are out there (like on QB School, if you want) if you didn't see the whole game. But the real question is, can he do it week after week? Can this be his normal, rather than his exceptional?
-
The issue is the formula is secret, and it incorporates runs... So... Yup, it does. Same with PFF (which isn't quite as secret). But when it doesn't - like on Sunday - it's often to hilarious results. PFF is more reliable I think at matching my 'eye' test.

He definitely had a great game. Not crowning him yet, tho. Hilariously, this was his worst of the last three games based on ESPN's "QBR" - 46.4, while last week was 58.4 and the NO game was 47.3... hahahahaha.
-
GB was a terrible pass defense, too, if I recall. KC is not at all, tho they are stronger against the run. Young not only kept us in the game but tied it up at the end. If he and the O figure the red zone out, we'll be a scary opponent.

This may sound weird but I'm low-key excited for the D in the future (if we keep evero of course). You can see some of his pieces coming together. He's just lacking the talent at some positions to make it work. Jewell and Wonnum, tho.. damn they are kinda exciting. And ofc Clowney is doing Clowney things...

Coker was on the injury report, I believe. Something from practice.

This is a really good explanation and puts it in good context. Thanks!

I've been watching him too and I just don't quite see that. He doesn't look as good as last year (mostly he is making worse decisions and throwing more ints) but he still has only 3 games all year with less than 200 yards passing and more games with multiple touchdowns than games with none. I really want Bryce to succeed and the last few games have showed promising improvement, but yesterday's game wouldn't be a surprise for Stroud like it was for BY.
-
Forget about Bryce, Dave Canales is who we should be talking about.

Give me the rest of the season at the level of yesterday and I'll sign myself up as a Twitter Stan. Until then, I just hope he keeps improving and we bring in competition next year. -
If he doesn't run into Thielen, he catches it for a touchdown. Thielen was in better position than the corner. We don't know who wins the jump ball there.
-
I mean, he'll continue to grow and develop as a player. There's no reason to sit perfectly healthy players. If he's in good shape, we might as well play him. If his injury is such that he is more likely to have a re-injury, perhaps you limit his play time, but football is a physical game and we need to develop our young players too.
-
Hopefully he comes around to being a better overall player... I think JT is coming along well blocking. He isn't as good as those two just yet there but I feel like I've seen him have some nice blocks, especially in the passing game. I think the PFF grades from this week looked pretty good for JT, albeit in limited time. Plus he's a threat every time he's out there. Unfortunately the other two just aren't.
-
Good point. He's definitely better in 10-15 yards. I think that's his biggest improvement. Edit: can't count in am, lol This passing chart doesn't look like at By one, lol. He threw more "deep" passes than Mahomes (NOT comparing him to Mahomes in a skill way lol), or at least more beyind 10 yards.
-
The D had two huge stops. Kept us in the game. But keeping Mahomes from a FG is virtually impossible at the end of the game. Still, not great before the 4th quarter and a lot of bone headed mistakes (esp by Horn). The D definitely needs work.
-
My only caution is we don't know how the playbook has changed to accomodate his specific skills or lack thereof. But... That's true of any QB. The offense was not held back by the passing game at all. He does need to find ways to score in the red zone but that will come.
-
KC has a very good defense this year. It is 5th overall. Yes, still worse than last year, but their offense is considerably worse. Their passing D may be their "weakness" but they still allow fewer than 20 ppg. BY completed several deep passes yesterday, and he was able to threaten downfield in ways he didn't seem capable of before the benching. I'm not necessarily worried about his ability to connect deep anymore. What to me was impressive was that he did all this without a run game. We used the pass to set up what little running success we had. Wild.
