How close did the Panthers come to getting Stafford? Dang close.
mav1234 replied to Zod's topic in Carolina Panthers
I believe Hurney was totally sold and it sounds like Brady was too. But I don't think that Rhule was ever the one directing that signing (and Brady wouldn't have been for that matter). I thought I read somewhere during the later half of the season it was really Hurney pushing hard for Teddy and Brady vouched for him but I may be wrong too. I hope Rhule does not have full or most personnel control. That is always a recipe for disaster IMO. -

Why do you think Rhule is in charge of personnel? I interpret his comments as a desire rather than the final call at an outcome. He does have some power but it isn't like what soem coaches do. I personally thing Hurney is gone in no small part because of the QB situation here. -
Fair enough - I had just heard the public comments. From what I had read, they're trying to convince Watson to stay, but I hadn't heard they won't even return calls yet. It makes sense they're still trying with Watson - I mean they hired the coach they did in hopes of keeping him. If Watson refuses to play, it would be very detrimental to the organization to try to force him to, when they could recoup their losses and give their new FO a shot to mold the team in the way they want
-
So the same sources that say they're not taking calls say they'll have to soon... Heh
-
I've seen multiple reports indicating that they are trying to "take the high road" but teams are calling. I've not heard any of the major reporters say they're "not returning calls." Where's that written down?
-
Why do you think offers would be leaked? We know there's interest from around the league but the GM would play it close to the vest obviously. We know tons of teams are interested, but we're not going to find out details right now. No doubt the Texans would prefer to find a way to keep a happy Watson, but keeping an extremely unhappy player is rough for a rebuilding franchise. We may hear leaks closer to the draft but I doubt before. I don't even see Watson being moved until then. No reason for it.

I agree with this. I think Tua may get back to where he was but that is still to be seen. I'm sure he benefited at Bama but it's clear injuries took their toll too, at least for now.
-
Seems high but maybe we also were trying to force them to take Teddy or something.
-
They're entertaining offers because it would be stupid not to. There's no reason to be that ridiculous because it can always be played off as due diligence. It doesn't mean they need to take the offers. There is no player that a team refuses to entertain offers for. Rank the teams? Tons of speculation that NYJ/MIA/CAR are all going to be offering great deals. I would expect any team with a need to be inquiring.
-
There will likely be 5 or more teams offering at least 2 first rounders and I suspect some that may offer more.
-
The biggest and simplest is that good luck building your new team around the new management when the QB is begging to get out... and when you could have multiple first rounders to turn things around with. That's a ton of incentive to find a situation that benefits both sides.
-
Watson likely has endorsements as well. There are incentives on both sides to get a decent deal done.
-
Lol.. those of us noting Watson has leverage due to the no trade clause is relative to a player without one. Do we really need to walk through why that is the case?

We don't know what went down behind closed doors and never will but it strikes me that the signs were pointing to likely moving on from Cam before Rhule was even hired. I don't know why Cam would harbor ill will towards him from public comments, which were as classically coach speak as is possible. Cam knows this is a business and is an adult... As to Tepper... No idea. But unfortunately the Panthers feelings on Cam seemed to he held by the league as a whole. It isn't surprising we moved on from Cam when moving on from Rivera too all things considered.

Strategy if we are going the vet QB route again: accrue picks

I don't believe you can judge what Brady will do with someone like Pitts based on the pitiful talent we have currently available. -

The TE is an incredible weapon and I wouldn't be heartbroken with him at all. TBH I expect one of the top 4 QBs to be available at 8, too. We'll see though. -
Hey guys this thread is getting stale let's make a new one on this topic

If 4 QBs are gone before we pick there are going to be some simply incredible options available at that spot. -
What about beating Detroit? Think how a tie or loss would have changed draft position!!!!!!!!! Burn it down fire tepper it's all over!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

based on how few people I see wearing masks, I would disagree.
