  1. Minshew was pretty good but we just spent two seasons complaining about QBs without sufficient arm strength. Yes, Teddy had issues going deep beyond that, but Minshew doesn't have anything close to Darnold's arm. There was some debate about this pre draft... And I was surprised when I did some digging into their advanced stats now much closer Minshew and Teddy were than I expected in terms of depth of targets and what not. But Minshew 'feels' in game situations more willing to take risks than Teddy did. Plus, Minshew had pretty much the same percent of bad throws as Darnold, far fewer drops, about the same percent of on target passes, and a couple yards less depth to his average attempt thru each of their first two years. Now I agree advanced stats can be misleading, and Minshew did play better with a better cast around him. A much better one lol
  2. I don't think worst case scenario is Darnold isn't competent and we have a bad season. I think worst case is a season in which we win enough games to be out of position to have our pick of a few QBs and we still don't have an answer at QB because of whomever played not being the answer . But I agree backup qb seems a big problem overall . I'm all in for Darnold now. I would like a veteran backup on waivers, but Minshew isn't that. If he really would be totally dirt cheap then maybe, but I don't want to invest more draft capital in long shots after Darnold. As to the potential, that relates to physical strengths. Minshew isn't terrible in those regards, and has played a lot better than Darnold mostly, but he really isn't physically gifted and while it's certainly early enough for us to be wrong, he just doesn't seem like he's a long term solution at QB.
  3. Minshew MAY be better than Darnold. But if he is, he still doesn't seem like he's likely to be good enough to be a franchise kind of QB. He also may not be. The bet on Darnold is about potential, not play so far, and it's hard to argue Minshew has more potential than Darnold. I'd rather fail with Darnold than suffer with Minshew, now that he's our QB. And if Darnold is as bad as some fear, he might just help us get our next QB.
  4. A couple preseason series per game when we are still figuring the OL out aren't going to make or break Darnold's year, and frankly those series' are more valuable to our backups / depth players.
  5. I really wish we had gotten Fields... Wish him the best in Chicago tho.
  6. Ehh... In each of his first two seasons, Darnold threw more TDs than Teddy has had in any of his seasons. He's never had offensive weapons or coaching like he has now. Honestly his decision making is still a concern. But it wouldn't take a ton for Darnold to be better than Teddy. Nor would it necessarily make him a good QB, which is my fear. But at least I'm also excited to see what the future holds again this season.
  7. I'm a little surprised none of the OL where we don't seem to be sure where theyll start will play at all, but oh well.
  8. There was a very distinct change in this forum in terms of trolls and toxicity during the Cam era and there are small amounts of it that linger and pop up from time to time... Maybe now is tamer... But for most of Cam's time here... It really was not comparable IMO to pre-Cam. But honestly there's always been whining and negativity like in this thread. This doesn't seem particularly remarkable.
  9. Darnold showed flashes his first year. Tbf, he actually did his 2nd year too. His stats weren't spectacular, but if you look at individual games, it does tell a bit of a different story. Still his level of improvement will need to be at a level that we really haven't seen before from a QB. Tannehill had good seasons previously, and while its true his during Gase numbers were pretty much as bad as Darnold, he'd at least shown something prior. I personally am skeptical he'll really be our QB of the future, but there's a reason I'm sitting on a computer at home on Saturday and not in some NFL team's office.
  10. Any time we get anyone with a connection of some kind to the org, angry trolls that either disagree with what they here or pick every rumor they hear apart chase them off. I guess that is just the consequence of a message board. I appreciate your content Verge. Nobody can be always right, no matter their sources.
  11. is diversity a problem for NFL management broadly, or not?
  12. "what's your data?!?!?!" *ignores meta analysis, finds single NFL organization that is being defacto run by one of the most progressive people in the NFL In Ron Rivera, highlights it*
  13. lol, 2019 was the lowest score the NFL has gotten since the early 2000s for race and gender hiring. Thankfully it got better in 2020, but we'll see if that trend holds. as to my "preferred solution", it is going to depend on the entity in question. you can't make a blanket policy for all positions and all organizations, which is why organizations need to adopt a fundamental goal of diversity as important. as to the WFT, I don't give a poo about single teams tbh. Look at the NFL as a whole and sports in general. Look at the percentage of white athletes and look at what positions they hold lol
  14. before we get to solutions, you seem unconvinced by the data. look, all it takes is a google search to find a TON of info on this. but here: https://www.pnas.org/content/114/41/10870 there's tons of other examples if you put in some leg work. but if you don't know this, its because you have chosen to remain blind about the reality. as to solutions... this article has a few: https://www.livecareer.com/resources/careers/planning/black-job-seekers-face-racial-bias-in-hiring-process
  15. do you dispute his point or just his auto-correct on his phone the best person for a job should be hired. but often, the exact best person comes down to subjective decisions where minorities lose out. studies have shown this, the data backs it up, unconscious bias is fuging over minorities from positions they are equally qualified for.
  16. I didn't like JR, at all. But he always came across as someone with some belief that he was upholding the pride & ... integrity or whatever of the Carolinas. Back in 2010, he called a bunch of us fans that wrote angry notes (lol, no joke - I dunno if the archives exist here now but a bunch of us talked about it), and one thing that stood out was he seemed to care MUCH more about appearances than the reality of the team. His focus when he called me was all about how he was disappointed in how the season looked, not on the fact the roster was fuged. Even when he was a sleezy motherfuger, I wouldn't be surprised if someone was able to appeal to how this was what was best for the region... while saving him money and embarrassment in case the NFL decided to come down hard on him.
  17. some environments are conducive to success and good decision making by players across the board. others are not. Hard to argue Darnold was the only one making bad decisions on the Jets last year... and this stat does suggest that's the case.
  18. This includes offense and defense. He also wasn't healthy. 30th isn't a bad spot given last year and this being O+D. If he's healthy all year, he's probably top 20 or top 15 next year.
  19. True he wasn't ultra consistent. If he was, we would have had to pay more. That said ... He didn't start until week 6, had 7 games with at least 1 sack (5 as a starter), 3 games with forced fumbles, and 16 qb hits. So he was getting to the QB more than just one game.
  20. It isn't different and help was brought as soon as is reasonable. You're right.
  21. God, how horrible. For this to happen live too... at least he got immediate attention. It's crazy but sometimes heart issues happen out of seemingly nowhere ... I hope they're able to get to the bottom of it and he has no lasting risk of another incident. Hot takes for internet cred in this thread ... disappointing.
  22. 20th just seems really low... Should be in the top of the league, period.
  23. Unfortunately, the huddle has its fair share of poo posters that take it out on others.
  24. I'll buy coaches can have a huge impact on players, and so to that end, schools can be better or worse at producing players of specific positions. But I don't think you can assume that a player will be bad from his school, particularly over his tape, and especially if he's the first guy out of a new coach's system.
  25. Honestly I think there is some truth to what he said. ALL of us noted how poor situational offensive play calling was, and that was especially true in the 2 minute drill. I also think overall he comes off as very professional and understanding that he had a shot and didn't make it here. He doesn't come off to me as being blameless.
