The reason a guy like Darnold tries to see this as just another game is because regardless of how he plays he needs to get out the next week and play well, learn from his mistakes, and not feel a single game is an accomplishment ... Or a damning failure. He will be measured on how he performs over the season.
-
Clearly Darnold is so miserably inept and lacking confidence his teammates got together to try to build him up by naming him a captain!!!! It's not like he's ever shown leadership ability before or something, and definitely not been selected by past teammates in a similar fashion!!
-
Did you watch the video because at no point did he come off as the way you are portraying him...
-
This is an interesting idea. I actually do really enjoy listening to him... But I don't think he's ready to hang it up yet. I get he's a big, intimatdating personality but he also seems a great teammate. I hope he gets a shot as a backup if that is what he wants.

If they have to change how the DL runs, have CBs always peaking in the backfield, have LBs staying home... that makes the defense account for that mobility in a way fundamentally different from immobile QBs. and btw the answer is yes, teams do spy Murray, and various outlets refer to him as a "true dual threat", even SI. And defenders think he is a running threat so...
-
quick google search shows plenty of results for spying Murray, including some cases where teams opted not to do it since he was faster than any spy they had on their team LOL
-
so you do not believe Murray scares defensive coordinators with his running ability? I think you would be incredibly wrong there.
-
Fair enough - I was comparing him to Murray there. He is far more mobile than TB and Ryan lol
-
are you really going to argue that Darnold and Murray are the same threat running? Darnold isn't immobile/statue-like, but he is pretty damn slow. Murray is anything but. If you think teams gameplan for their abilities on the ground/running the ball the same way, you are absolutely wrong.
-
It was both business and football. Unvaxed players are a liability, and having one in the QB room is a particularly big risk I think. And, Jones is honestly the future of the Patriots, regardless of this season. I think once a starter gets injured, Cam has a shot. I have a strong feeling Cam is better respected among active personnel in the NFL than he is fans and commentators.
-
Plenty of us appreciate what he did here and want only the best for 'em. I like threads like this because frankly it just reveals the shitty posters that I can ignore.
-
yup, he knows he basically lost the job over the vaccination status. that's the thing, you want to show a team what a risk you are by not being vaccinated? get pulled off the team for five days... why even risk that?
-
yeah, the vaccine part of the video may me sad/mad. tbh, the way the US health system has treated minorities, I don't blame skepticism, but it really bums me out to see Cam suffer for it. I do believe at this point Cam could and would be a backup. I think he knows his career is moving to that point...
-
The way in which they danced around the medical appointment and not being vaccinated tells me there are things Cam didn't want to talk about there that are reality (that not being vaccinated did fug him). He was very complimentary of the Patriots for the most part. Certainly seemed less bitter than Teddy was when we let him go, lol.
-
The problem with a spy against some of those guys is that they are too fast for them lol. Teams have used spies vs Murray though. He is widely regarded as a dual threat.
-
Murray may not be Cam Newton, but he's had more than 500 yards on the ground before of his two years in the league.
-
Murray is a great point. Didn't he have double digit rushing TDs last year too? I mean hell, Daniel Jones and Watson each had >400 yards on the ground and rushing TDs. You better believe D coordinators are accounting for that mobility, even if it isn't the same as Murray and Jackson.
-
while "running QBs" may not have changed the game, I would argue that mobility has. The majority of top 10 QBs are definitely more mobile than it has been in the past. While there have always been mobile QBs once in a while, being a statue is much more of a liability now than it used to be

I appreciate mods allowing this thread to be in the main forum. Cam will always have a place in many of our hearts. I get he attracts trolls, but that shouldn't be the reason to move a thread... This video was interesting. I'd love for Cam to find a place that he can thrive, even if it is as a backup. I personally think Cam sounded much more reasonable than his father. Interesting choice to have him there for the segment.

Darnold takes responsibility for sucking in NYC
mav1234 replied to top dawg's topic in Carolina Panthers
It's not surprising he has the maturity to take responsibility for things and not to throw people under the bus. Darnold was Jets captain at least in 2020 and I think 2019 as well. There's some weird narrative on this board about him lacking in leadership that is not borne out by even a cursory glance... It's weird stuff. -
NFL Network says Darnold worst starting QB in the league.

Sam's best drive was certainly the 2 minutes but the 2nd quarter had 3 drives, 1 punt because we failed to get 2 yards in 2 downs, and 2 TDs... I would also argue the 1st drive was as much on Brady/Rhule testing if the OL could get a yard as on Darnold. I can agree the performance didn't settle anything but I thought he made some quality throws. -
Who do you think should be a captain on this team? How do you know these players don't exhibit leadership skills?
-
Just a reminder that how these players act in interviews may not be reflective of how they act in lockerrooms, and one does not need to be cocky or boisterous to be a leader.

I've seen a couple popular media notes about Darnold struggling vs backups. I don't get it. I get saying we can't judge him much from his play vs them, but he had a solid half... -

I also found this an odd one. The way he bounced back from a rocky early start by a turnstyle OL was pretty good I thought.
