I don't know. He had a couple of good seasons with Darnold, he signed an extension here... I think there's more at play than that. His catch % is 20% lower than when Darnold was throwing to him on the Jets. His drop % so far is 3 times what it was when he played with Darnold (and he had the same drop % with Teddy as he had with Darnold). His yards before catch per reception is also waaaay higher with Darnold than it was with Teddy. I wonder if he's being used different than last year too. Or different than the first few games since his production went pretty far down after his first half dozen games.

I really, really do not give a flying fug how our QBs act in bars as long as they win games and lead the offense. Frankly Tyrod has a better history of that than Darnold and even at his age we'd be more likely to win with him next year than Darnold. But I also would rather we find a young signal caller that we can build around long term. Think this staff is capable of evaluating QBs well enough to do that? Because I'm not sure.

PFF: Panthers go from easiest schedule to date to now hardest
mav1234 replied to Saca312's topic in Carolina Panthers
Honestly? We've had 4 one score games, including against the best opponent we've faced and arguably one of the best teams we'll face all year. If this team gets a little healthier, they can hang with anyone. If Rhule and Co can figure out a way to make fuging halftime adjustments we might even surprise some teams. This team has a lot of talent. -
Let's just go on record right now. Who you picking Shula or Brady
mav1234 replied to Snake's topic in Carolina Panthers
Brady. Shula had otherworldly talent to work with and still sucked. Brady has interesting play designs but is garbage situationally. If you gave him Cam and Olsen and a decent OL, that wouldn't matter, because those dudes dominated in the situations Brady struggles in. -
you're talking about a player whose best performance had twice the INTs as TDs. He is not better than Darnold and is likely a significant downgrade. You don't play PJ on a .500 team

Bridgewater(2020) vs. Darnold(2021) through 6 games.

You've been open about your dislike of Darnold. That's fine. I don't think he's the answer here either. But, what about the Teddy experience suggests to you the team needs to do what you're proposing? Just seems unnecessary. -

I'm not good with Darnold but acting like these 6 games are the worst a Panthers QB had played is asinine. That's what Oldham was responding to. -

What's the point in starting PJ if he isn't an upgrade? I'm not sure it is a lateral move. Why are we acting like PJs Lions Game was very good? He had 2 interceptions and we would have won with a stuffed doll of Kyle Allen. Darnold isn't our answer but holy hell neither is PJ Walker. Edit: also lol Darnold has had 4 starts objectively better than PJs Lions gsd, what do you mean his fanboys would be Peacocking over it?? -

I do think we will need to draft a rookie for long term success but I think they're really going to struggle behind our OL. I think we will see which prospects look decent too as the college season goes on... I wouldn't be surprised with another retread after trying to rebuild the OL and going for a rookie in the following draft. -
Some of the drops were hospital balls but many were not. There were something like 10+ drops of which 8 were catchable according to PFF (not finger tip catches) and multiple ended/would have ended drives from what I saw. The 4th quarter drops only didn't end drives because of 4th down. Hell DJ dropped a TD that may have changed the outcome, and I love DJ. Something was off with our guys all game.

Bridgewater(2020) vs. Darnold(2021) through 6 games.
mav1234 replied to kungfoodude's topic in Carolina Panthers
I agree that his 4th quarter was impressive and if we win that coin toss I think we win that game. Darnold hasn't ever been consistent for more than 3 or so games is the problem... That is his pattern. -
Bridgewater(2020) vs. Darnold(2021) through 6 games.
mav1234 replied to kungfoodude's topic in Carolina Panthers
I'm not really sure of that. Maybe 4-2, if they're decently mobile. Unless you're talking about getting a QB like prime Cam back. The OL is awful and D has trouble getting stops in the 2nd half. Play calling on O is bad. -

Everyone keeps saying Teddy's problem was not going deep but forgets that he threw the coaches under the bus and was 0-8 in opportunities to lead a game tying or winning drive in the 4th... Darnold is probably not the answer here, but we really set him up for failure with this OL. We will see how he responds the rest of the season because I don't think he's going anywhere. The real question will be which retread we bring in next... -
Panthers WRs had the 6th most catchable drops by a team the last decade
mav1234 replied to ncfan's topic in Carolina Panthers
Darnold rallied the team from being down two scores... That's after the D gave up 16 points... Including after what should have been a momentum swinging special teams play... As to the fumble that luckily led to no points... The fumble was on the OL. Darnold certainly has many failings and his first int was on him, but not all fumbles are on QBs. Darnold wasn't good but boy did he have a ton of help this week in that loss. If our D gets one more stop... -
Are the 2021 Carolina Panthers worse than the 2020 Carolina Panthers?
mav1234 replied to Zod's topic in Carolina Panthers
it definitely isn't all his fault. he isn't throwing interceptions on the first plays of games, nor dropping a historic number of balls. but his playcalling alternates between amazing and complete fuging garbage, he seems TERRIBLE with adjustments and situational playcalling, and he seems unable to adapt to losing CMC... and I think he is slow in getting the plays in etc... he just doesn't seem to get the tempo of an NFL game yet. -
Assuming his attitude doesn't change and we go through cycles of good and bad performances, I do think we invest in the OL next year (unless a very good QB prospect falls to us in the draft), bring in another backup QB option, and go into his 5th year option saying how much we support him but expecting to draft / find his replacement at the end of the year. I know that sucks for us as fans in a lot of ways, but I also think it makes more sense than sticking a rookie behind a shitty OL and expecting something different than what we've seen so far.

mav1234 replied to ncfan's topic in Carolina Panthers
I wouldn't call myself on the Darnold bandwagon. I don't think he is the answer here and that is depressing. And I think that despite also recognizing that a historically bad WR performance and terrible playcalls are not doing him favors. If he can find a way to play like he did in the 4th quarter consistently, it'd be a different story. But he is who he is, and he isn't our long-term answer at QB. -

mav1234 replied to ncfan's topic in Carolina Panthers
Im not saying Sam is perfect or even really good right now, but when you watch Jefferson and Thielen fight for receptions... It really made me miss Smitty. We need more consistency out of Sam, the receivers, and Brady. -

mav1234 replied to ncfan's topic in Carolina Panthers
He's also got more drops than most other QBs (I think he has 5th most of top 20 QBs by yardage and I don't think yesterday has been factored in yet), and has one of the lower number of bad throw percentages in that group. Darnold has lots of problems but he is really not getting help from his receivers outside of DJ, and even yesterday DJ let us down multiple times -

I think I'd read 10 total, so probably 2 were deemed uncatchable by PFF. -

I think most of us could tell we were putting up a... historic performance on offense. What a crazy stat tho
